World of Warcraft for two reasons:

A) It has at least ten years of development under its belt; it's more refined, extremely expansive, and there's a MASSIVE number of people that can help you find things to do if you're somehow stuck or bored. It's had more time to mature, and has aged like fine wine.

B) I have a compelling desire to throw rotten eggs at the building of whoever published Rift. I hate hate hate HATE their marketing sector. It's petty of me, but the ads have ruined the game before I've even tried it. WoW doesn't have to pull these stunts because they already KNOW their game is good and whoever's playing it will continue playing it and whoever isn't won't. But one good way to get people to avoid your game before they've even tried it is to shove ads in their face every time they watch a video. Eventually, and the creators of Rift MUST realize this, the viewers just WON'T GIVE A S**T.

*Oh, and using the phrase "we're not in Azeroth anymore" means that you are CONSCIOUSLY trying to compare yourself to WoW, a challenge of such utter folly that it immediately makes you look like a doofus.

**I don't play either game on a regular basis, but I have TRIED WoW. I didn't like it... but I'm 100% sure it's better than Rift.

Get neither, wait for Guild Wars 2.

To contribute to the thread: if anything, try WoW.

Personally I'm going to have to go with Rift just for the fact it has a larger focus on PvP. PvE drives me up a freakin' wall, and I'd rather do it in a single player game like Dragon Age.

BOTH games have a free trial, give them a look and the decide for yourself. The ebst advice you'll ever get when you can try something for free.

PvP annoys me unless I'm playing with my real life friends and we can gang up on noobs. I'm always worried that I'll get abandoned or betrayed by my teammates...

In the MMO world I just see absolutely no point to killing the same pre-programmed AI mobs over and over just to get better stats and gear to kill more pre-programmed AI mobs. I like a real competition.

I miss DAoC ;(

wow, the game is still pretty awesome and if you don't do the quests for the bazillionth time they are really fun.
Rift on the other hand seems to be tailored to appeal to disgruntled wow customers till GW2/TOR come out. Plus do not support a game where the whole PR seemed to be: "LOOK AT ME!!!!!! I LOOK BETTER THAN A GAME WITH A TEN YEAR OLD ENGINE AND I CAN ALSO DO DIFFERENT STUFF, I AM SO MUCH BETTER THAN WOW, PLEASE PLAY ME BEFORE THE SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER MMOS COME AROUND IN THE NEXT 24 MONTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111111einseinself!!!

I'm feeling like getting into one of these two games (I've never played either, the only mmo's I've played are Runescape and Rappelz) for about a month before I head back to university. I have a month's holiday and I'm already bored out of my brains. So I ask you fellow Escapists; which should I get and why?

PS: Please don't turn this thread into a flame war I just want to hear the pros and cons of each so I can make an informed decision :)

I would suggest WoW but both WoW and Rift have free trials so try both and see what you personally like.

In WoW I am Sluggs on area 52 Horde side so if your playing WoW go to that realm and that faction and ill help you when I have free time in game.

edit: sorry didn't notice you would be playing on EU side. I would still go with WoW though.

Ya, she's by far my favorite faction leader. Garrosh is nuts, Cairne is dead, Vol'Jin is just kinda chilling, and Lor'Themar Theron has absolutely no back story. It's also funny to watch raids get decimated by her as she blinks around and spams a massive volley at everyone.

Speaking from my personal experience, if you only have a month to play, I wouldn't bother with either. Both are fine MMO's (take that as you will), but a month isn't really enough time to 'get' it.

You would either get hooked and your schooling would suffer, or you would stop after a month, having not really seen all the game has to offer.

There's lots of new-ish games around that are interesting enough to bide your time until school starts. Ones that you can stop playing at any time (so you might be able to weave them into your school life effortlessly, without going through the rigamarole of guild apping, server transfers, faction switches, etc.)

WoW is the way to go.
And if you hate grinding, just go on a PvP or RP server, find what you like on the non-grinding time.
Basically, there's a reason WoW is popular. It's the best MMO out there, either because other MMOs just aren't as good (Runescape) or are trying, and failing, to imitate what WoW has to offer. Rift falls into this latter category. I've never played it, but the fact that it seems literally impossible for those who have to not mention WoW in every sentence isn't a great point in its favor.

World of Warcraft, at least for the amazing and rich lore.
You mean amazingly fixed lore.It was interesting up until BC when they had baddies to kill off. Then they had to go back and change the timeline since they needed naxxramas again. It's a jumbled mess and they fail to deliver because of the small development team and other projects.I remember the promise for an instance below Karazhan(There was even a large door looking ominous) and a new instance in that desert that they introduced in Cataclysm.

The moment something hard and skill requiring pops up it get nerfed to accomodate people who play once a week.Thing is most of those aren't a big a number as people who play all day but actually have no skill to pass the challenging instances.

This is not the reason I quit tho.It just ate my life but the game becoming exceptionally boring at Wotlk had a factor in how easily I dropped it all.

As for your choice.I haven't really seen Rift a lot but it looks solid except for the requirements. It might look good but imagine another 200 people in a colourful city with open spaces and moving objects. That shit is gonna lag.I'd suggest giving Age of Conan a whirl. It has a trial and I believe 1/3 of the game is becoming free. For the rest you need to pay some premium user price.

Honestly I suggest looking up free mmo's for the moment since they are becoming really really popular and run on microtransactions that cost far less than WoW monthly tax. There's some stupidly interesting titles and for free. They also don't have the same hook up element as WoW does which is good because everyone needs a life :p.

World of Warcraft.

Both have a free trial so you can play both and decide for yourself, although they are capped, so don't expect to experience everything. I played Rift for a while, I realise the end-game is lacking due to it being a new game, but it's going in a direction I don't like. Everything is far too structured for PvE, the zones are quite small and force you to level along a certain route, the dungeons and raids lack difficulty, the professions are insanely easy to level and the huge talent tree customisation (which they love to brag about) comes down to making a macro that uses every ability in a set rotation. A lot of the skills that you learn aren't even worth using because you don't spec into the improved version. The Rift's feel like a gimmick also, the invasions are small scale, it's kinda cool to team up with the enemy and take down the boss leading the invasion, but the impact of the invasion and Rift's themselves feels quite small. I stopped doing them at 50, they just got tiresome. It's not "oh cool, a Rift" it's "for fuck sake, another?"

I'll admit that the dungeons in Rift are amazingly designed, they look fucking beautiful, the same can be said about the entire world too. Graphically it looks awesome, and I like how they're currently adding options to customise your character's appearance. The weapon design and armor design for me are unimpressive though, they went for a realistic look which, in a fantasy world, looks out of place. I wouldn't recommend Rift either if you want to PvP, there is little world PvP other than ganking people outside the lv50 quest hub and the Warfront's are a clusterfuck of imbalance, it was a little bit of retarded fun for a bit though, and the ability to speak to the other faction allows for some funny smack talk during combat.

WoW is just better in my opinion. More content, more freedom, appeals to both casual and hardcore players, better PvP, better lore, better art direction, better dungeons/raids. I know it's down to opinion but Rift just feels lacking, a lot of people I know who have played it have said the same thing. I don't mean lacking in the sense of content either, it's just missing something. I quit last year and renewed last month to see what had changed, it still feels the same.

My biggest problem with the way Rift looks is the "realism" I saw. I don't want a city that looks like it took Gears of War color pallet, I want a fantastical color rich environment. Look at Silvermoon City, compared to... Well, I don't know the name of the Rift city I saw, but it reminded me of Stormwind, but without the feeling of being a real city.

Both have free trials, don't let a community decide for you. As for my opinion, I prefer Rift. But again, free trials.

Unless you have friends who play World of Warcraft, I'd recommend Rift.

I'm speaking as a long-time WoW player, who gave Rift a try towards the end of the beta.

Rift does most of what WoW does, only better. It's generally more polished, and naturally graphically better.

However, try out both of them before committing one way or the other.

As for other options, if you want a fantasy themed game, the only major one I can think of coming up is Guild Wars 2, if you like pvp.

Otherwise, there's Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is of course a different genre.
