Being in the same situation as leyland, many thanks to The Madman for his excellent advice. Now I just gotta scrounge up the money to get both games...

They may be old in respects to gameplay and graphics but good writing is always good writing

Just get both. I doubt either of them are going to be at exorbitant prices. I bet both would cost $20 in all. Though I'd prefer KoToR since it's my favorite game of all time.

Just saying, getting both originals and sequels and all of Icewind Dale as well.

Hooray for classic RPGs!

If you care about shaders, physics and other glittering eye candy things like that, none. Game play wise, for BG you must be a real rpg fan or atleast be willing to get bored to death. My opinion on KOTOR doesnt count since i really hate that game.

I say:

Buy the entire Baldur's Gate series in a bundle.

Play BG2 first. It is the best game in the series, and the best one to break you in.

Then play BG2:ToB with your BG2 character.

Then, once you're all invested in the story and rabidly foaming at the mouth for more BG content, THEN play the entire series starting with BG1 all the way through ToB.

I've always found BG1 more compelling in context as a prequel to BG2, rather than a standalone game.

As far as OTHER Infinity engine games, Icewind Dale has great action-oriented content. Planescape Torment has great story-driven content. Both of those games are worth playing for those respective strengths. But, Baldur's Gate 2 is the total package, a verifiable masterpiece.

edit: KOTOR is good too for what it is, but its not the timeless work of art BG2 is. Ultimately, you should get around to playing all of them!

Both. Baldur's Gate ultimately wins out because you have more freedoms in the technical aspect of character development, though.

I haven't played Baldurs Gate but KotOR was easily my favorite RPG of all time and has to be one of my top 3 favorite games of all time.
