I would not recommend it. It was fun at first, but eventually I quit playing. I have been clean and sober now for two years, and I don't miss WoW one bit. It's fun until you hit about level 40 or so, and then people just expect you to pay higher level characters for favors such as instance running. I could never get a group together for an honest dungeon run because of that. I think that the game has lost a lot of its appeal over the past few years. I miss the good 'ol days when gold selling wasn't an issue, AH prices were kept by honest competition, and people actually worked for their items and gold.

Here's a list of the MMOs I've tried and why WoW is best.

EVE: It is a job. I know a lot of people will tell you otherwise, and maybe the two weeks I spent playing it were just the "lead-up" to the actual fun, but it really was boring to me. Nothing at all happened, really... except for the douchebag PvP pricks who will take every opportunity to ruin you. Why? No, they're not "pirates", they're not from a rival faction, they're just assholes who like to blow up people weaker than them. Normally I'd be okay with this (see WoW PVE vs. WoW PVP), but there is simply no option to play through by yourself. Woo.

Tabula Rasa: lol. I was in the beta, I registered for the actual retail product, and it was... well, it was okay. One thing really hung me up on this game though... maybe they've changed it now, but back when I played there were several trees you could progress upon to specialize your character. IE - Soldier to Commando to Sniper or something like that. Once you hit level 30 (I think) and choose your last specialization, it is the most immensely dull game I've ever played. Plus combat is severely broken.

Age of Conan: It is quite possible that since I cancelled my subscription last year, they have fixed it. When I played, it was a mediocre WoW clone, with improper or misleading tooltips, severely unbalanced classes, a very vast sense of "what in the fuck do I do now", and a general feeling of "this isn't even done". It did have admittedly amazing graphics. Also, boobs. As far as the eye could see.

Guild Wars: It was alright, but again, once you hit the final level and got your final skill it was basically just a competition to see if you could squeeze out just another one damage per second so you could win in arenas. And let's not even get into the userbase... an MMO with no monthly charges = fifty guilds called "COCK" or "BUTTS", and everything you see in city chat is along the lines of "omg u r a fag lol". I understand this is, after all, the internet, but jesus christ man... I play games to get away from pricks like that.

Star Wars Galaxies: Just wait for The Old Republic, unless you're really keen on emulating the old Galaxies. The way it is now is hilariously terrible.

The Matrix Online: It's defunct now, so I don't even know why I bring it up, but this is another classic example of SOE taking something good, turning it over, and giving it the gears Deliverance-style until it's no longer playable.

Everquest: I didn't play it nearly enough to get a great idea of what it's all about, but I will say that I had a pretty okay time with it.

Everquest 2: Looks good. That's about it.

Darkfall: Commonly called "Darkfail" by yours truly, and for good reason.

All of those Korean MMOs: All of them are universally bad. Unless you've got a no-limit credit card.

Addendum: Actually, not all Korean MMOs are bad. Shot-Online (a golf MMO) was actually hella awesome until the pay-to-play elements were added.

Why do I think WoW is great? Simple. It does the MMO thing the best. It sets the bar for every other MMO. Leveling up isn't necessarily fun, but it's not the chore most people ***** about, and there's always something to do.

A few of the biggest things I like about WoW are thus:
-A lot of people play it, so finding a group isn't always hard and there are some really cool people on there*
-The graphics... even though a lot of people ***** that it's too "cartoony", I love playing a game that isn't all grimdark like every single video game that came out this year (browns and greys, woo)
-The entire game feels polished. Everything has been gone over many times with a fine-tooth comb to fix bugs, to make sure tooltips are actually helpful, to make sure that you can have fun. I have never played an MMO where everything works before I played WoW.
-The monthly fee weeds out a lot of people who simply don't belong in contact with other people
-It is still easy to be a jerk as a Rogue
-And finally... it's just plain fun.

The cons of WoW, as I see them, are:
-There are still a lot of people who are so retarded you wonder how they are able to use a computer
-Since everybody already has a level 80 character, finding people to level up with is a little harder than I remember it (I used to play pre-BC)
-The expansions contain everything fun (flying mounts, new zones, new equipment)
-The expansions are also a little pricey: I paid $40 CDN for Burning Crusade and $60 CDN for Wrath of the Lich King
-It is still easy to be a jerk as a Rogue

I dunno. It's not a terribly big decision, but for what it's worth I love WoW and think you should start playing it.

I played the 10 day free trail and it only lasted 2.

Probably the most boring game I ever played.

I was doing the same fetch quests over and over and over.
Just like all FPS's are just the same kill quest over and over and over.

Just like all racing games are the same travel quest over and over and over.

Just like all sports games are the same point gain quest over and over and over.

It's almost like everything involves repetition.
You just mentioned two genres that I never play and one that I hardly ever play.

Yes, in the end every game consists of essentially doing the same thing over and over. Half-life 2 is essentially just a shooting gallery. But it doesn't feel like one, because of clever objectives, level design and story. This is the reason why I prefer single-player over multi-player. A good game developer knows how to 'cheat' the audiance into having an amazing experience.

If you go to school: no.
If you have a very busy work schedule: no.
If you barely have any money to spare: no.
If you don't have time to devote: no.

Simple. As. That.

I have been thinking of joining WoW for quite some time now but can't make a dicision. The game looks really fun and I finally got a good enough cumputer to run the game (Only last week) but WoW is really pricey. I think that the game is probably worth it: In depth story, good graphics (for an MMO), cool invironments and overall good reveiws. But I want to know what other people think: Is it worth it, is it a good game and are the players (as a general rule) nice or complete D-bags. Please vote then leave individual information.

:) thanks!
If you decide to play it, be ready to turn into this guy

Well I've never once felt like I was grinding in wow or doing the same quest over and over. Partly because I actually get into the story.

I like all the Genres I listed above (I even consider playing sports games to be a step above watching sports, basically its being a sports player, playing sports games, or at the lowest totem pole watching sports), I was just trying to point out that every single genre is reptition.

To each their own. I Half Life 2, whereas 1 seemed hollow and boring, I was absolutely engrossed in the story of 2. I'm actually kind of pissed they haven't released episode 3 yet.

If you get into screenshot mode and start exploring wow, reading npc dialogues and learning backstories, the game is easily as complex and long as a couple LoTR novels (maybe not all 3). It's almost too impressive how much content they've forced down the throat of the duck they call WoW.

BUT For folks that just want to mindlessly power level and 'pwn' I'd probably recommend a different MMO :p.

I played it while fitting into all 4 of those categories. I just did the smart thing and got into a popular+casual guild. They helped cut out the time consuming part of the game.

I lost 4 lbs while playing. But I think he's kind of running with the stereotype. Most of the people I played with were good parents, nice hardworking folks. Sure you can find fat douche bags, but you'll find those anywhere. Crap, get 30 days of Xbox Live and get back to me :p.

It's a complete revamp of the main quest "Hub" until level 60. Now at the moment WoW's quests are basically "go here and kill shit" or "go here, kill shit and bring me shit they have in their pockets". Not only that but when you reach the higher levels(I'm talking level 40+) most areas where you can quest are just dull and boring. The new expansion promises to somehow "tweak" the quest system and most of the 40+ leveling areas, making them better. Developers also said they are going to be using the "phasing" technology that was at work in the DK starting zone and some of the areas in Icecrown to a greater extent.
Now what I'm trying to say with all this is that leveling will probably become enjoyable in Cataclysm.

Also, Blizzard said that the 2 new races' starting areas will take them up to level 15 and that those starting zones will be using the "Phasing" technology even more. I don't know about you, but unless you are a human leveling through the starting areas is a pain.

I don't play but I shall answer for two friends.

One joined and then quit after a few months and said it was really shitty.

The other is going to quit soon because he is bored of it.

I'm pretty sure you have no idea what the entire reason that episode was made was.

However wild speculation is always the best tool when message boarding on the internet.

I loved that episode, but mostly because it reminded me of my (bleh) brother in law. He plays Second life, but basically looks like a carbon copy of that picture.

I actually tended to take boats or trams to get my non-humans to the human starting area. It was easily the best leveling for the Alliance :p.

The new content is going to be pure cocaine and sex I'm sure. The quality of the game (in the areas they update) has only gotten better as time has gone on. Sure I'm currently not playing but I tend to play it when there is no other good games out. Which oddly enough is far too often :p.

You could try it...There is afterall a free trial. I would check around and try the free trials for different mmos tbh. WoW, AoC, Warhammer, EVE, and don't forget GW II is coming. Also, mmos are a lot more fun with friends, so, do whatever you can to find friends in an mmo, or convince current friends to join with you. Other then that it is all up to personal taste, some people may hate WoW, some may not really care, and others love it, you should try it yourself rather then ask us.

I played for a year, it was fun. But I didn't have the money to keep going. It was pretty fun. Try it for a while, if you don't like it, just stop playing.

Ouch.....I feel like that was an unnecessary burn to me.

I will never look at smiling cats the same way.
