As films they are terribly made. They fail to establish likable main characters, and most of the plot/script makes no sense at all.
On top of it all, it's a story that doesn't need to be told. After three full movies, all that happens is we see an angsty, irritating Anakin fall to the darkside and become darth vader. There is no real character arc to it, Anakin never feels like a great or well-liked hero so when he turns it feels pointless.
On top of it all, what makes the movies really terrible, is the laziness with which they were made. Nearly all of the scenes are either actors standing around talking in front of a blue-screen, or the whole screen packed to the brim with mindless computer-generated action. Either way, the computer artists did most of the work, and the effort put into the live action film work is extremely minimal.

Did you love RotJ but think that the Ewoks let it down a bit keeping it from being as awsome as The Empire Strikes Back? The watch the prequals. 5 seconds of Ja Ja bloody Binks, plot holes the size of Westminster Abbey and acting that sope stars would consider bad as well as what they do to Yoda in Attack of the Clones and you will never hate those furry teddy bears ever again.Professor James said:

Watch them if you want of course, but the general opinion isn't just hype backlash. They are legitimately awful films. If you're like me, you'll see the first one and not the second and third. I was interested when they announced the trilogy, but seeing the first killed my annticipation for the second. I eventually saw part of it at a friend's house, but again, it wasn't good enough to spend time on (and one of my favourite films is Death Race, so we're not exactly reaching for the sky here). We went for a walk. The third one is the best of the three, if that's a useful measurement.
So yeah, watch them, but don't feel like you have to. If you get half an hour into the Phantom Menace and become aware of all the better things you could be doing, go and do them. There's no payoff to sitting through them all just because they exist; they're a waste of time.

Yes, you should watch the prequels, Revenge of the Sith is easily the second if not best in the series, sure some moments you will not like, but hey I never enjoyed the thought of spending half an hour in Jabba?s Palace or The Empire being defeated by Ewoks.
It depends. if you liked the original movies because they had great characters and storylines, then leave the first three alone. if you liked the original ones purely because of space battles and lightsaber fights while simultaneously feeling that the overuse of CGI would have made those movies better, then watch the originals. i actually watched 4, 5, and 6 for the first time after i saw episode 1. i was like 9 when i saw episode 1, so i really liked it. however, after watching 4, 5, and 6, it made that first one look like total and utter tripe. the second one was even worse. 3rd wasn't as terrible though.
Personally the only one I find absolutely unwatchable now is Episode I, mostly because of Jar Jar, midichlorians and general childishness. Episode III is definately worth watching the other two, though.

Besides that, Jar Jar Binks and Darth Maul will make you want to slam your head into a window with the hopes of piercing your brain.
I cannot for the life of me understand why everyone is so in love with Darth Maul...he's a goth kid reject who gets owned hella fast. It's like he's the Boba Fett of the prequels...
