If it's for an English class (Hadn't noticed that with the original response) definitely write it, you're probably expected to hand something in as well as the debate. At least that's been my experience.
Yeah we have to turn in our information that we were required to collect to learn about the subject.

The only test I put 100% into I got a 98%...

But it depends how important this class is...

I need to pass but I already got like 95 in it.
Well, just half-ass the studying and you should be fine...

Aim for a B...

You should probably study, it's worth a large percent of your grade. Knowing me though, I'd just wing it.

Put your faith in the human ability to make up crap on the spot and hope you're one of the .00001% who pull it off. Like Bush! Oh wait...

Don't write your argument. Get a few points together and think about what order you're going to put them in but don't write a speech. No argument survives contact with the, uh, enemy. Do study though. Get some key facts you can throw at your opponent. Think about what s/he might argue and research some facts that contradict his/her points. Know that s/he'll probably be doing the same so think of some counter-srguments to your arguments so you can, uh... counter them. Then watch some Alan Shore closing arguments to get inspired.

A debate isn't neccesarily about being right it's about prooving the other guy to be wrong. If you keep up a strong defense and create points that undermine theirs then you should come out on top.

Trust me on this. When I was four my grandfather deemed me to be, in his words at the time, an "argumentative little shit" and I haven't stopped since.

Right now, I've my final exam this year in 5 hours, and I'm on the Escapist. I think you can imagine what my approach is. (though it nearly always works for some reason)

Get the best of both worlds:
1) Study until you normally go to bed
2) sleep with the textbook under your pillow
3) profit!
(sorry, I couldn't resist that)
The upper bit was a joke, but it all depends on how good you are.
Do you find your schoolwork naturally interesting?
If so, it makes it much easier to memorize.
I know I can generally count on my "passive studying" and/or awesome intuition to pull me through tough spots occasionally.

Hell, I'm winging an assignment right now that's worth more than that..... though on reflection I should probably be doing it. But I have NEVER ran into a situation I couldn't get by by half-assing it.Though maybe that's just me.

Some guy I knew apparently won a ton of debate tournaments by just saying the same thing, only making it a question, if that would work in this situation?

Ex:
Person 1: Nuclear power is bad.
Reply: Nuclear power is bad?

For that much of your grade, study.

I always find that I remember the general idea of things when I wing it, but not the entire picture. Studying helps to bring in those crucial small pieces that can result in you winning your argument in the debate or getting a good grade on it, and most likely your class.

Depend how smart the class is, if you're the smartest or have the best rhetoric skills you can pwn them, otherwise hit the books.

If you have confidence don't write up a full paper (inless that is required) but write all your main points on a sheet of paper, and facts/resources to back them up.

In a debate it is much better to have a paper broken up then in paragraphs and in each section supporting facts/resources as I said before. Although this all depends on what exactly you are doing. This would be a method to debate with, obviously you would not want to turn it in as your paper if your assignment is an essay on your side.

Also it helps a debate if your try to make arguments against your side. Then find counter arguments to these.

I'd study.
I have two exams tomorrow and one on Thursday, so I'm doing a fair bit of study tonight.

Also, learn to spell 'ususally'

If it's a fifth of your total overall grade, you might want to get together a little something. You don't have to make up anything formal, as most of debate comes from responding to others' arguments, and you won't know what they're going to say until they say it, but you should at least do a tad bit of research (get some statistics, facts, and the like that support your point), so that you're able to debate the issue at all.
