continuing a cycle of violence only begets violence. to be free of it, someone must be willing to break the cycle.
If I hurt everyone that damaged me as a child, there would be a lot of people dead. instead, I choose the path of forgiveness, and understanding that I have broken the cycle, and that it no longer has any power over me.

Let me ask you this... assuming this was the system we used for some ungodly reason,
what should be the punishment for agreeing with ridiculous notions such as this one???
If i killed 100 people, can i be killed 100 times in return?
What about manslaughter? How do you propose we carry out the accidental killing of someone?
If i crash my car into a small shop or a house, will someone else be incharge of doing the same to me?
We've already created something that helps prevent this... a judicial system.
There are already punishments in court that mandate equal compensation for damaged items, stolen items, ect... and in some cases death is chosen in response to causing death, because it's based on specific parameters and circumstances.
But to propose that EVERY punishment be the same as EVERY crime is an unfathomably ridiculous proposition, and i cant imagine that anyone who has a brain that is functioning at any minimal capacity wouldn't realize that.

Lock 'em up (length, as it is now, determined by the severity of their offense) and make 'em work for the society they hurt, I say.
It's more productive than "an eye for an eye" and it's not as permanent as, say, execution.
If a person is later found to be innocent, well, at least they can be rehabilitated and (at least partially) compensated through money.

Well, if someone stole my wallet, I would love to be able to call the cops and have them steal his wallet as revenge.

Why not just kill the rapist and be done with it? Why bothering raping him? Just kill him.
There are some crimes that, yes, I would be okay with killing the offender. But that can quickly get out of hand. It's a touchy subject and one not easily perused. It's more complicated than a simple yes or no.

I'm against harsh punishment. Capital punishment, too. It's just another murder, also, justifying it by having "another murderer less in this world" isn't really very reasonable... I feel that people in this world cannot be divided into two groups - innocent and guilty.
And usually the people who get locked up are victims to begin with.
Thieves are usually forced to steal, because they're so damn poor. Many pedophiles were sexually abused as a child themselves. Some murderers are psychopaths - mentally sick. These people need help.
Some people here mentioned rehabilitation... but all that time in prison will most likely just make the people worse. Make them even more of a criminal.
