I LOVE RTS games, it's just annoying that I don't have a gaming PC and no super good one's come out for consoles. Maybe if the kinect and move work out the controls will be easy enough that people will start making console Rts games. hopefully.

Uhh...you guys DO know that you can attach mouse and keyboard to a console, don't you? Just like you can get controllers to plug in to a PC.

I'm certain the only reason why they don't come standard with a mouse and keyboard (with the controller as well) is to stop them from looking like unupgradeable, pricey (for their power - still good value as a gaming package, as the ability to tailor games to exact specs helps a lot)PC.

They can be on both, but let's be honest ...the pc is where rts will dominate for a long time. Also: C&C+ Tiberian Sun & Firestorm, Red Alert 1, 2, C&C:Generals, Metal Fatigue, Total War (anything), Empire Earth, Dawn of War series, Warcraft + Starcraft ...shall I keep on going?

Edit: goddamn captcha taking 1000 tries.

RTS without a keyboard and mouse is not a proper RTS. It just isn't and I don't care what anyone else has to say about it.

Tbh I've lost faith with RTS in general. Most of them that are being pumped out are slam unit X and tank X together and zerg face. I loved Company of heroes because of the cover system they had which added a little more strategy to battles, but they patched that into utter fail as well.

I really love RTS games (I suck at them too, but still) I think they should keep trying to make RTS' work on consoles, it's obvious the PC is where they're at, but if studios just give up, console RTS' may never evolve.

Take a look at Halo Wars and Endwar as two prominent examples, Halo Wars worked to a degree with quick buttons, only a single resource to manage and doing a lot of the complicated legwork for you, it wasn't innovative but it worked and I played a lot of it.

Endwar wasn't IMO as good as Halo wars, but Endwar was trying something new and it was actually a great idea, a little iffy and sometimes didn't pick up your voice properly, but it was the kind of evolution I'd like to see more of.

Here's hoping for a Strategy game that uses Kinect to track hand and voice at the same time.

I would definitely try that out.

Yes...?
Has anyone played Starcraft 64? I played about 20 seconds of that before deciding never to play a console RTS ever again.

The only good RTS for a console I've seen is Darwinia+ for 360 (Since you only really need 3 buttons and a way to move the camera for Darwinia/Multiwinia)

I think if they're well done, they can be on consoles. I don't own a Wii/Xbox/PS, so it doesn't really matter to me. I'll stick to my PC.

If they can get the PS move to act as a mouse it might work better. the same theory holds for kinect as well, but i've used it and my hope died.

Same here!

I actually sold my copy of Army Men RTS for the Gamecube (a gift) because it bugged me so much. RTS should be PC exclusive IMO.

Do you think its possible to make intuitive enough controls to make a console RTS able to be feasible in features to a PC? I mean if they were able to give you control groups (not just splitting your squad automatically, that hardly counts) and could get past limited tech tree's could they be good?
I think part of the problem is people approaching it as trying to make a PC-style RTS work on a console, which isn't necessarily practical. If you look at the ones that have been somewhat successful, like Halo Wars or Overlord or Pikmin, they take into account that they're not PC games and work with what they have. What makes a good console RTS is not necessarily what makes a good PC RTS. They can definitely expand on what they've found does work, but "making them better" won't necessarily involve "making them like PC games".

See also: console vs. PC FPS games. There are not exactly a whole lot of super high speed twitchy FPSes on consoles, because things like Q3 demonstrated a very long time ago that they just don't work as well. Console FPSes have evolved in a somewhat different direction that suits them better (even if I don't particularly like it), and I suspect something similar will happen with RTSes if there's enough interest for people to keep making them.

Of course micro management is impossible to the level it is on the PC but games like Total Annihilation (If your an RTS fan you should know what that is, if not google it) managed to have minimal mirco management without having to dumb down everything.
The RTS I've played with possibly the least micro involved is AI War, but getting that to work on a console isn't even remotely possible, for a ton of other reasons (to start with, I can't even begin to imagine a UI that would let you keep track of everything while still being usable with a controller). That's the kind of thing they will always miss out on, at least with consoles in their current form.

No, I dont like the idea of restricting things. It inhibits creativity.

So yeah, they can go ahead and make an RTS for consoles. Just try not to fuck it up. For their sake, otherwise they may get fired/bankrupt.

BTW, what was Pikmin? was that a RTS or a Squad commander thing? I havent played it, but im interested.

I remember playing a Warcraft game on playstation without much trouble, but, on the whole, complex RTSs just require the button assignments that a keyboard has available. I can't see console controls translating to a genuine RTS well. I even tried a few trial RTSs from the XBLA and it was just a nightmare...

Honestly, if Microsoft and Sony were just willing to spend a little bit of time hyping compatible mouse/keyboard combinations, I think we could see a huge step forward in RTS quality for consoles. Sure, support for the mouse/keyboard combination might alienate people who only want to use a controller, but specialized peripherals didn't really seem to hurt the music game genre at all. Actually, increased mouse/keyboard support would mean less watering-down of RPGs on consoles, too, and I might be willing to play FPS games on console if I had my preferred control scheme available.

I think RTS could work fine on the various consoles. However the biggest problem with RTS games on consoles tend to be the lack of a good and easily usable interface. If interfaces of past RTS games keep being copied then the developers will continue to make subpar RTS games for consoles.

That said if developers could come up with a new and innovative kind of user interface then I could see RTS games working well on consoles.

Basicly the problem is not the console, its the lack of innovation for console RTS games. Until said innovation happens I think they should stick to the PC.
