No, smoking should not be illegal.

But speaking as smoker to all the other smokers out there: Be considerate of the people around you and the community. Try to find a place away from main crowds, preferably a designated area where someone has provided a butt-can, and don't smoke right outside entrances to public places. Don't just toss your butts on the ground, either find an ashtray or get rid of the cherry and put your extinguished butt in the trash. If there weren't so many smokers walking around being assholes then maybe people would let us be and find something else to complain about.

And to the non-smokers out there: We choose to smoke, leave us alone about it and stop trying to get it illegalized or taxed into oblivion. And don't complain about it if you go into an area or place where smoking is permitted and taking place and then complain about it. Nothing used to irritate me more than when I would be enjoying an after meal smoke in the smoking section of a restaurant(don't have to worry about that anymore here)and some busybody would tell me to put it out, if you didn't want to be exposed to smoke during your meal you should have asked for the non-smoking section.

Basically everyone needs to stop being pricks to each other, none of us are without blame. And anytime you think to yourself that something should be made illegal just remember that there is something you enjoy doing very much that somebody else would like to make illegal just as much.

Imo, smoking in public (and any other place where it could hurt other people) should be illegal. What people do in their homes or in designated areas are no one else's business.

Did anyone else notice this trend:

In the 90s and 00s, there was a rise in anti-smoking commercials. At the same time, there was a huge rise in mood controlling/altering drugs, drugs for stress, and antidepressants?

Coincidence? Perhaps. But you must know why people smoke to answer this. It's relaxing, takes the edge off, and reduces stress.

No, I'm a smoker, and it just makes sense to keep it legal. And no, we don't need more taxes on cigarettes either, they already bleed my wallet dry enough.
If your wallet is only Bleeding then they aren't being Taxed enough!! We want your wallet to cry out in agony as the Money is gauged from it's pockets and its change inhumanely snatched from the corners!!

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!....what do you expect I'm into politics

Gradually phase it out. Illegal to start smoking, but people who are already can keep going to their hearts content. (Actually.. their heart prob isn't too content with that) Some kind of license you can register for free or something because smokers can't go cold turkey straight up.
There should be the option to smoke, on account of freedom. However, it can be phased out, over ~50 years, by a combination of: continuous tax increases and increasingly restrictive trade regulations. That way, the general public's pervasive health problems derived from smoking, and the cost of treating them, disappears(on a nationally significant scale). This will nullify the lost revenues from cigarettes. (This will only work in nations with a centralized health care system)

After all the free market is an inducement system; you can't force companies to stop profiting from cigarettes, you have to coerce them.

Topic done five times that I can remember.

Anti-Smokers say it's harmful and they don't like the smell.
Smokers point out the 90% tax they pay that props up the Health service, it's an addiction and it's their choice.
Anti-Smokers repeat it smells bad and some call for the death penalty.

There ya go. /thread.
which country are you talking about here?

It's not just that. It's that it's harmful to my health when I'm around anyone who smokes. As long as it doesn't affect me, I couldn't care less. But it does affect me, and it affects me in a negative way, so I'm against it.
Indeed! If it didn't affect me I'd have no problem with it. But truth is that everyone around that smoker is affected. I don't suggest banning it, but I do suggest raising some Taxes!! You want to smoke then prove it by paying for it MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

God I'm evil....and lungs so full of air. *Takes a Deep Breath* COUGH COUGH HACK Note to self don't do that in Pasadena... T_T

Yes (public places) and it is already illegal in Saskatchewan as well the other provinces (to my knowledge anyway).

You have the right to smoke, you don't have the right to expose us to your fumes.

Making it difficult and undesirable, yes. Make sure people know it's a stupid idea, also yes. Banning in certain places, very yes.

Banning it altogether? No. Just look at what happened with the Prohibition.

I completely agree with you. One of my parents used to smoke and I couldn't stand it, and I forced them out of the house if they wanted to do that crap. I was 8. Now, I can't stand it when friends or adults around me do it so in public places I believe it should be banned. If we heavily tax it, our tax revenue could greatly increase, hopefully doing something for this recession. Even thought it's TECHNICALLY been over for years.

I agree with you lettucethesallad it should be the people's choice. I'm not saying smoking is good or anything like that. But that the government shouldn't tell you what you can and can't do. Perhaps a heavier tax would help discourage smoking tobacco.

I think most smoking should be heavily taxed until it is universally socially unacceptable.

i'm fine with people smoking weed, but cigarettes are disgusting and you shouldn't smoke them where people can see you. You should be too ashamed. But it is reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally fun to cough at smokers when running by them
What makes marijuana better than cigarettes? Marajuana is in fact worse for your lungs and overall health than cigarettes are. Big gaping hole in your argument.
Actually cigarettes and tobacco use kills an average of 435,000 people in America annually, while marijuana (cannabis) kills 0 Americans and it doesn't cause cancer. Cigarettes also contain a lot of chemical additives that make them more deadly than smoking just pure tobacco, marijuana does not having any additives. Huh, I just stood up for something I never used in my life... I feel odd.
Since marajuana is an illegal drug, no one would admit the cause of their cancer was the mentioned drug. Also, since normal smokers greatly outnumber cannabis smokers, the numbers would be low anyway. Lastly, I haven't heard of any studies about marajuana and cancer rates in the United States, although I would like to.

No. If smoking is banned then drinking has to be banned as well.
Drinking doesn't harm your health unless you overdo it. Smoking harms you regardless of amount smoked.
Alcohol is carcinogenic. One shot of vodka can give you cancer. It's unlikely, but so is one cigarette giving you throat cancer.

I still don't know how I feel about this. I think the best way is to say anyone born on or after the date that would make them legal to buy cigarettes the day after the legislation is passed cannot buy cigarettes.

However that's only if you feel they should be banned at all. I'm starting to think that if someone can show me a positive affect of smoking the fist time not after you're already addicted, then I'd consider that maybe they shouldn't be illegal.

As it stands I think anyone who starts smoking, knowing the dangers, is a fucking idiot is making a very stupid decision which I cannot respect. I don't mean to offend any escapists but I would assume any smokers here would probably have started smoking before thinking about/knowing the dangers.

Only in public places. I dont care if people give themselfs cancer from the safty of theyer own homes. But the minute they light up in a resturant 4 tables away, and all i can taste of my $15 steak is ash, thats where i have to draw the line.

Smoking in public is basically forcing your life style upon others.

There's no such thing as second-hand drinking. There are holes in your story, and I'm gonna get to the bottom of this!

Smoking shouldn't be banned outright, but it should be illegal to do so in public places and around children.

No,
We should all have the right to put what we want into our bodies (urge to rant about marijuana law, rising) and it looks like that's the general opinion here too. Restriction to minors is common sense though; I doubt that's ever going to change, but education about these substances is vital to kids and THAT'S what needs to change. I hate the bullshit slideshows showing horrific deaths due to drug abuse (at least that's what we got in my school, but the english are odd like that!); It's propaganda, that was obvious to me when I was 13, stop insulting my intelligence dammit!! I want the facts, I want independent research free of political bias being made available to people who want and need it.

One thing I've noticed about the facts though is that a few people in this thread seem pretty damn sure of whats so bad or good for you that they're calling for other people to be denied that choice aswel. I'm certainly not saying they shouldn't have an opinion; by all means, If you think smoking is bad for your health then that's cool, don't smoke! But realy? Telling intelligent people what they can and can't do to themselves?

I don't know the details in regards to passive smoking but even with the hype of biased studies you can still see theres something there. I used to smoke until a year ago (when I realised it was actually pretty bad for me, then guess what, I stopped) and one thing I always did was ask if people minded me smoking near them. If they didn't approve i'd move away and that's realy all it takes.

Being "straight edge" is fine too, some people don't like to alter their mental or physical states and "that's like, their opinion man!"-obscure reference. But please stop making a huge deal out if it. Oh great you DON'T do something, and? I do get sick of the self righteous little... (cough.. anyway), educate yourself about drugs and then take the ones you think are right for you.

tl;dr: erm, No.
