What the hell... Nearly 40% you can't be serious. ~40% don't know the difference between right and wrong? I'm sorry, but that does make me violently I'll.

No, it's not righteous or admirable to want smoking banned, it's nothing short of selfish and inconsiderate. It's not protecting others from the harmful effects of smoking, it's just forcing your likes and dislikes onto others when it has nothing to do with you, whatsoever. To protect people from themselves? It says right there on each pack, exactly what it does, what the effects are, with big block letters and pictures to get the point across. By that logic, you could effectively ban alcohol, it has some pretty harmful effects right? Prescription medication usually has some uncomfortable side effects, maybe you should get rid of that. Why stop there, have the state ban things like ice-cream and cake, it makes you fat after all.

If some people enjoy having an occasional smoke, or drink, or bowl of ice-cream, or whatever it may be, and it gives them a little bit of peace - I say good on them.

There's no such thing as second-hand drinking. There are holes in your story, and I'm gonna get to the bottom of this!
Everyone who is quoting me are you all idiots or something? The bottom of this? Heres the bottom, drinking causes just as much problems as smoking. Ever hear of drunk driving, bar fights, abuse due to alcohol, poor judgement under the influence, or alcohol poisoning? Or do all of these just fly past your heads? You don't cancer right away from smoking, you get it later on. ITS THE SAME WITH DRINKING. IF SMOKING GETS BANNED THEN DRINKING SHOULD AS WELL. Fucking hell, think people think.

I think that it should be banned in public and have rediculous taxes placed upon them. The less people smoking, the better. Plus, they should start charging people for littering if they leave their ashes or butts on the ground.

Wavering between "yes, in public places" and "no, but tax the everloving fuck out of it." I settled on the former. I don't care if people smoke in their own homes, so long as it doesn't affect me. Ditto for all drugs. Some, granted, it's harder to ensure that for than others, but still.

I don't think fines for littering should be restricted to drug-related garbage.

I quit although I feel that smoking should be allowed. It's very un-american imho to tell someone what to do rather than let them decide for themselves.

Key difference between alcohol and smoking. Lots of alcohol=bad. Little alcohol=good. Lots of smoking=bad. Little smoking=still bad.

OT, I think it should be illegal in public places. To everyone who claims that this takes away the freedom to smoke, what about the freedoms of my friend with bad asthma? We've had to leave places just because somebody decides they want to light up.

I think what he means is that smokers are basically never ticketed for littering when they just throw their cigarette butts wherever.

I said yes, because I think that in most cases, secondhand smoke is dangerous as well. Other tobacco products should be made that simulate smoking solely for the individual.

To be honest I've never seen much of a problem with smoking. Both of my parents have been regular smokers for years and in their case some of the facts that stand are:

*Neither have any major health problems

*They only smoke outside or in designated areas

*They've got duties and kids to look after, a smoke now and then helps take the edge off (because some haven't discovered the joys of stress-relieving videogames)

*Over the years only a few have been uptight enough to voice their opinion on smoking right to their face if so much as a trace of smoke meanders away from the empty or designated area to their precious lungs

*Unless you're constantly being beset by heavy smokers in an enclosed environment second-hand smoke isn't going to kill you, most smokers are careful to do it away from others or in the designated areas

So no, I don't think it should be made illegal. Warned aginst, certainly (my folks have often stressed the point to never take it up with me and my brother), banned outright, of course not.

But who will protect us from the metal gears?

No way/ It is unthinkable! Even if I wasn't a smoker I would still be against it. What next? Ban fast food? Ban alcohol (didn't work that well last time)? Why not ban every fucking freedom and just tell me what I can or can't do. If someone want to slowly kill themselves, let them do it!

What's your friend's problem anyway? Did cigarettes steal his high school sweetheart from him and now he wants vengeance?

EDIT: So many anti-smoking extremists here. What is your problem? If I'm not blowing my smoke in your direction, my smoking does not affect you in ANY way!

My asthmatic friend totally needs your condescension. He'll get back to you after he finishes having his asthma attack.

My asthmatic friend is smart enough to avoid areas of high smoke concentration and designated areas as well as use his puffer should idiotic smokers disregard the many rules and designated areas put in place to avoid such scenarios. It's a pretty airtight system they've got in place, and frankly if they're having asthma attacks even through all that then they're probably in need of 24/7 medical supervision.

No. I think marijuana should be legalised. I don't smoke, do drugs, I don't drink and I'm a 17 year old! However, it's not our choice. What happened to freedom. There should be restrictions, like no smoking in public places. And I'm iffy about the "hard" drugs like meth, because that can be dangerous to others. Maybe if there were controlled areas for them... I dunno.
Anyway, I'm going off topic. Smoking shouldn't be illegal, in privacy. In public, definitely because then your decision affects others.

It doesn't take a high smoke concentration to trigger it. Basically when it gets to the point where I can smell it, he can have an asthma attack.

Basically though, I didn't like the tone of your post. You made it sound like he should just stop being a baby.

Let's look at it from the another perspective though. You have 2 sides, smokers and asthmatics. Why should the rules favor the people that have a choice about it and could go without?

Of course not; it's natural selection.

I like the idea of idiots killing themselves off.
