I like to smoke and be a burden on the taxpayers. oh wait we pay ridiculous taxes on cigarettes here in this country that you should be thanking me for propping up our health care system that I have yet to take advantage of

No. If smoking is banned then drinking has to be banned as well.
I don't care what people do if it doesn't harm me or others. Smoking does inherently, drinking doesn't.

smoking does not just harm the people that smoke, but also the people around them.
smoking has no health benefits at all.
tobacco only kills whoever breathes it in, even after you smoke.
the smoke clings to your clothes, forcing others to smell it.
and for those who say "i'm just exercising my right to smoke" i say this: you are interfearing with my right NOT to breathe that smoke.

smoking = an ABSOLUTE RISK as smoking will cause cancer.

drinking = a potential risk dependent on personal judgment.

nice way generalizing everyone to be an idiot who will do stupid shit. that is the same argument against illegal drugs like pot saying "everyone who smokes pot will become gang bangers and shoot people". nice fucking generalizations there. care to do pot smokers too? what about heroine users? or cocaine users? alcohol gives cancer? talk about bull shit.
I believe that you are the misinformed bull shitter who is generalizing. So Mr/Mrs Hypocryte, where is it you get your 'facts' from? Smoking WILL not cause cancer, smoking CAN cause cancer. So there is not this ABSOLUTE RISK that your talking about. And the thing with drinking is that that effects others (a drunk driver or a drunk with a gun for example (guns are another thing that should be banned if something so trivil in comparason such as smoking was))when it's not even their choice. The child in the backseat of the car owned by the well behaved, good mannered driver didn't choose to be broadsided by the idiot who chose to drink and drive did it?

However noone has stabbed someone becuse they smoke. Like all things, smoking is a choice but it only effects the smoker.

For the record I drink aswell.
I also find the concept of 'absolute risk' absolutely hilarious. THERE IS A 100% CHANCE THAT YOU MIGHT GET CANCER FROM SMOKING!

Unless I'm forcibly entering your home and smoking there, you're ALWAYS welcome to fuck off elsewhere.

Illegal in public places, legal in your own house where only you get killed by it. That is how it should be, everything that does not harm others should be legal, so long as it does not harm others.

But I hate it when people smoke in public areas, hate it. So legal, yes, in public, never. My country is actually enforcing that soon enough... amazingly enough.

i'm fine with people smoking weed, but cigarettes are disgusting and you shouldn't smoke them where people can see you. You should be too ashamed. But it is reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally fun to cough at smokers when running by them
We have at least one indication that lack of smoking can lead to acute cases of smug prick. Maybe you should light a few cigs up, you might even make some friends.

They banned in public areas in Poland. Schools, work, in the park, parking lots, streets, even on your balcony. You can smoke only indoors in private areas.

And I couldn't be happier. I don't have to go to the toilet with the fear of suffocating because of idiots who can't survive an hour without inhaling toxins.

Well, if you keep smoking, you might make some friends. Or your lungs might make new friends. One will be "Chemotherapy" and the other will be called "Respirator". Oh, and their good pals, CT Machine and Radiation Room. Great band.

Topic done five times that I can remember.

Anti-Smokers say it's harmful and they don't like the smell.
Smokers point out the 90% tax they pay that props up the Health service, it's an addiction and it's their choice.
Anti-Smokers repeat it smells bad and some call for the death penalty.

There ya go. /thread.
Well atleast in sweden they have done studies that shows that they loose more money then they gain from the taxes since smokers are more sick then non smokers

that would be called "breaking and entering"
which is illegal

Only in public places, second hand smoke is far too unpleasant and infringes on others. They should have smoking clubs. They should also tax it more; if we are dealing something that is bad e might as well make some money off of it.
Public places point: stupid - unless you mean indoor places in which case fair enough.
Tax it more point: ignorant - more than half the cost of a pack of cigarettes is tax and so smoking is a massive net gain for the non-smoker.
Should have smoking clubs point: right on - that would be the right thing to do. Except of course that that would end up with no-one going to the exclusive non-smoking places that smell of beer, farts, and sweat (and half your friends have to go outside to smoke) and everyone going to the inclusive places. We have, in fact, had this situation for years before the smoking ban, when every business was free to have a non-smoking policy that would be adhered to, and yet very few places doing so survived long.

so second hand smoke isn't dangerous? maybe we should make smoke saunas so we can all die of smoke inhalation how about that? smoking can affect those around them as well. this is all coming from someone with first hand experience in a alcoholic and smoking family.
No-one cares about your first hand experience. First-hand experience is the opposite of useful comment in a debate about issues that affect populations. Maybe if you have first hand experience of running clincical trials and reaching scientific conclusions your opinions might be worth more than the scum on the soles of my shoes, but until then leave your dysfunctional addict family out of the discussion and stop trying to manipulate people into valuing your opinion. This is coming from someone with first had experience of attempted manipulation.

Passive smoking can only effect you in certain cituations. For exaple yes smoking IN the house with your kids around is a bad thing as the kids don't really have a choice. So I agree with you there. But alot of people (a surpriseing amount) are being really REALLY stupid by saying that they have to breath in our smoke when we smoke outside... what the hell. That's just thick.

There's only one other situation I can think of and that is in a bar/pub or something (in my country this is already illiegal) which makes sence I suppose but only if your someone who goes to the pub on a regular enough basis to be doing damage to yourself through drink.

There's also the cituation where you go round to someone's house and they smoke, but then... it's their house. So that one doesn't really count as your not forced to be there.

You would be surprised how little passive smoke effects you, you have to have long-time very regular exposure to it and even then it's still not that much. Although Smoking in the house with kids deffinatly does increase the chance of the child smoking (perfect example, me) later on in life. So mabye there should be a law passed that you shouldn't be allowed to smoke inside your home when there is kids there or something. Or mabye parents should just go outside as it's not that far unless you live in a mansion, in which case I'm sure you have a smoking room where the kids can't enter.

I actually am a very heavy smoker

but i dont do it next to someone who doesnt smoke, i hate it when people smoke and then blow their smoke at my face, its just stupidly impolite, so i dont do it

i do see the issue that making illegal something so obiously stupid would make more harm than good, people are stupid but if they want to kill themselves they should be allowed

BUT, killing others is wrong, so go ahead and ban people from smoking in public spaces, i agree with that notion.

now, "MORE TAXES TO CIGARRETS"

thats something that i´m kind of in the middle, i want to keep smoking, but its becomming more and more unconvenient to smoke, so i will probably quit just to be able to keep feeding my self, i dont know if its a "good" way of making things happen... but its definitelly helping to turn that "I wont smoke anymore" knob.
It's also turning the 'rich people have choices, fuck everyone else' knob, remember...

there are people who smoke and there are people who don't
the ones that do not smoke don't harm anyone when they exhale
those who do smoke harm themselves and others
why should people who don't smoke have to breathe second-hand smoke?

I believe he was talking about the breaking and entering part. Which isn't relevant.

As for smokers harming others, drinkers harm way more WAAAAAAAAY more. Infact the amount of people that smokers harm (due to smoking) is very very small. Yes they harm themselves but that is their choice

EDIT: I think the quote button is being a bit weird.
