Should Steam be optional?
Steam seems to constantly annoy me why should I need an Internet connection to play games that is really, really retarded (MMO'S - exception) it is especially stupid with SP games like Hl2 or F:NV why? The DRM dosen't even work it is still pirated to buggery! In fact Steam only encourages piracy so gamers don't have to go through this whole pile of ****. I don't stand by piracy but if you want to play steam only games without this rubbish you have to pirate them.
So this is my suggestion for a solution since so many of the brainwashed masses love this DRM riddled rubbish.
Instead of making you buy games and download them from Steam (even from disc thats how restrictive this system is) you buy your game as a download from steam or on a disc from your local shop or a site such as play.com or amazon.
If on disc you install then at the end of the install you are asked do you want to install steam y/n?
Click yes steam is downloaded.
Click no steam isn't downloaded and you can enjoy your game without requiring an internet connection.
The problem with your "connection to internet" argument is this: So long as you don't log out of Steam, if your connection dies, you can just play in offline mode. My modem died, and I didn't bother fixing it for two weeks. I could still play Titan Quest, Oblivion, and ME2 in offline mode. I just had to remember to keep my computer on.
And I find Valve's business tactics more than agreeable, so I'll take some DRM from them any day. Hell, if that's what I have to deal with in exchange for free updates to 60% of my games, I have no right to complain.
(Until the updates break the game)
