Do you think the moon should have a name and if so what would you call it. I personally think it should have a name to avoid some confusion when talking about astronomy and because it doesn't make a lot of sense for that name to be kept since there are more then one moon in the universe. It would be like calling the sun the star. I would call it Vesta for no exact reason.
...Before you make a thread, make sure you have an idea what you're talking about. And there are other 'suns' called 'suns', as it's proper name is sol.

That being said, I can't tell if you're trolling.

Damn too late to be the smart one in this thread... oh well I shall take another role then.

Also Pluto is a planet because Mass Effect says so.
That argument is just as good as the one used by the fella who demoted it. I approve.

Those are actually really cool names. Luna is based off a woman pretty much, huh? As for Sol.. I am guessing it's based off a guy or the Sun Goddess. Same applies for the moon but am not great with history no joke.
Sol is Latin for "Sun"(as well as other languages). "Sun" comes from old English(sonne) and ultimately old Germanic.

Luna is Latin for "Moon". We get "moon" from an old (really old) Proto-Germanic word after going through many forms of English. If you wanna go Greek then you want Selene (the adjective being selenic).

In the end they are pretty badass names and I always refer to the moon as Luna and the sun as Sol(actually I say "daystar").

um mass effect never said it was planet, i remember it saying, we only point this out because we used it to launch our self's to the relay. its more a nod to the people who refuse to listen to reason and say Pluto is still a planet.

if you actually listen to the reasons why the experts say its not it makes allot of sense. classification in science is not based on how i feel it should be, but what it is according to the evidence at the time, when new evidence comes up classifications need to be redone added or changed. also a reason why we use dead languages to call things stuff in science, cause there meanings never change.

on that note, the moons name is not fucking luna. unless you were alive a couple thousand years ago, if you speak English call it by its English name. MOON. unless your doing a research project and you want to make sure no one gets our moon confused with any other moon, than go ahead and use the dead language name for our moon that no one has speak other than in scientific terms or to pretend there smart in a very long time.

The man was asking for a personalized name, just like your personal name is not "child" or "human", there are billions of moons out there so what should our moon be called.

I say we name it Bob

Since everyone has already pointed out Luna, I'll point out that Vesta is the name of an Asteroid discovered in 1807.

if your name your child Child, than child is both a proper and improper noun for your child. we bin calling the moon Moon before there were other moons than our moon that we new of.

You're right. It's name is Selene!

1. You also have the think about "what if we were observing Earth from another planet". We aren't far off from colonizing Mars so saying "the moon" doesn't help there.
2. Even when we refer to "the moon" there is an implicit "around the Earth".
3. If we had two moons around Earth we would refer to them by their names. Just as a side note, saying Luna's name is "Moon" is the exact same as saying your name is "human".

snip.
I have no real answer since I know my logic is based off of a video game so I can only come up with one retort in this debate.

Other than a wiki who will argue for me.
Mass Effect was completed somewhat before Pluto's "demotion" to dwarf planet status. The game therefore treats Pluto as the ninth planet. In Mass Effect 2, however, Pluto is called an "ice dwarf" in its galaxy map description and its orbital path has been removed from the galaxy map.

The purpose of a personal name is distinction and once we discovered more moons that name became a classification, thus the distinction was lost and a new one was called for in this thread.

Actually, the name of the moon is "The Moon". Luna is an adjective, not a proper noun.
Nope, you're thinking of the word 'Lunar' refferring to a quality, as an adjective.
Luna is a name.

You guys. The Moon isn't properly called Luna, nor is the Sun called Sol. Those are their names in Latin. Astronomers use "the Sun" and "the Moon." Other stars aren't called suns either. They're stars. They have designations and a few lucky have names, but there is only one Sun.
