The moon has a name. It called...
Duh Duh Duh...
The moon.

It's not just 'a' moon, it's 'the' moon, because it's our moon so why would we need to call it anything else.
Referring to the moon by 'the moon' is perfectly acceptable and pretty much everyone knows what you mean.
When talking to someone about a different moon, you either refer to it using the name of the planet it's orbiting or the given scientific name, so everyone will still know what you're talking about (well, if they know about the moons in the system anyway)

The Moon shouldn't have a name, we should all just ignore it, remove any trace of its existence from our language, literature, art, film, television, games etc etc. We won't even look at it.

And if we all did that, do you think it would blink out of existence?

As for the name, I'm not quite sure, but since us Americans were the first people to step foot on it, I think that we should have the honor of naming it, if it was ever required.

For the sun I'd prefer Helios of sol, but they're both pretty cool,

As for the moon;

"The English proper name for Earth's natural satellite is "the Moon".[7][8] The noun moon derives from moone (around 1380), which developed from mone (1135), which derives from Old English mōna (dating from before 725), which, like all Germanic language cognates, ultimately stems from Proto-Germanic *mǣnōn.[9]
The principal modern English adjective pertaining to the Moon is lunar, derived from the Latin Luna. Another less common adjective is selenic, derived from the Ancient Greek Selene (Σελήνη), from which the prefix "seleno-" (as in selenography) is derived.[10]"

I think luna is just the best, although Selene also sounds nice.

I believe it has one - Luna.

Now, I'm not being snarky. I really, really like the name Luna, and I think people should be encouraged to use it whenever they refer to the moon.

Currently 'The Moon' is fairly identifiable as being the one that orbits earth, from any other moon via 'The'.

If we end up populating multiple planets, then yeah, giving it a specific name would clear up potential confusion.

We call it Luna, while the term "lunar" can apply to all moons, Luna is only used for Earth's moon.

Isn't it just called 'the moon'?
I asked this in my science lesson.
Oh and sol is spanish for sun.
:D
yeah, i know.
i AM Spanish, you know...
anyway, it's known as 'The Moon' cos everybody has ingrained it into use.
it's just when people translate Luna into English, they get moon, and everybody feels the need to use the english word instead of something that actually sounds like a name.
and yeah /thread already, question's already been answered.

I had always assumed this. Moon = Luna and Sun = Sol. Well, ever since Mass Effect anyway.

Not many people know it's Luna, thenagain id call it Ronald or Grimace, only because of KoL (Kingdom of Loathing) thenagain, they're McDonald's characters, if they wanted a giant advertisement, they'd use a "Laser" and a "Tractor Beam" to carve into the moon's surface in an image of the McDonalds M.

Austin Powers references :p

Actually, all other moons are referred to as 'satellites'. It's a more encompassing name, used for objects in orbit of the body in question.
The Moon would only very rarely be used as a scientific term.

So even without Sol and Luna, there was still no problem.

It does have a name. The Moon. I don't see why that is insufficient.

It has a name, "the Moon". Not much else to add, other than there's a difference between the Moon and a moon.
