here's how it should be
E for everyone whatever and up (I forget what it is)
E10+ for 10 and up
T for Teens 13 and up
OT for Teens 16 and up
M for Mature, People 17 and up
HARD M for people 17-18 depending on maturity of person and content of game.
AO for people 18+
there ya go!

i agree with many of you people here that the ratings are total bullshit or at least the standards by which games are rated, any 13 yr old out there has already had "the talk" with their parents so rly, the whole thing about sex/nudity being more highly regulated than violence is absolutly pathetic. Sex is a perfectly natural part of life while violence is unaceptable irl, so basicly the government who pressures the ESRB to enforce these ratings are teaching some of the young impressionable children that are bound to get ahold of M-rated games that it is wrong to have sex/feel an attraction to someone of the oppisite sex, and yet it is perfectly fine to go around shooting/punching/cleaving people w/ recklass abandon?

It really just shows you how rediculously corrupt the US government is and imo everyone that holds a seat in this current abomination i previously wrongly refered to as a government(a horrible overstatement for that pile of scumbags) just need to be kicked out of office, banned from politics for life and we just need to rebuild from the ground up...extreme i know, but possibly the only solution to the horrible circle of lies and hipocracy that hold control over us atm.

P.S I know my rant went waaaay off topic but felt it was necisary to prove my point

Also, I wish stores would stop "enforcing" the ratings. There is a reason that they are not law.
Your only saying that because your obviously under 17, it's good that stores enforce the ratings, children shouldnt be playing games that are unfit for them. Now i'm not saying that you shouldn't play M games, but it's good that they have a policy that they follow.
Actually I am old enough, thank you very much. And the only people who should be in control of what the children play are their parents and/or guardians.

I feel like the ratings between 16 and 18 are spaced too close together. I mean, what difference would one year make? And HARD M is useless, if they're the same age as M and AO, then why not just rate it M or AO?

That's exactly the problem though, if parents were to be left solely in charge, then most children would be playing GTA and such. Parents aren't involved with their kids enough, so it's good we have a way to enforce the ratings.

Well I'm not saying this is the best, it's just fairly specific.
And a Hard M would be more blood and sex than an M rating, but it is kinda an inbetweener. Like There are R movies that are just barely R and there are R movies that are like "Whoa." so there could be a rating to make it so M is the softer stuff and hard M is the more wow stuff.

Only if "M" becomes more hardcore, say 18+, and the developers are free to put whatever in there
/thread

Then again I've yet to see a game where the developers have actually been allowed to put whatever they want on it.

Newspapers and deskjockeys who are only interested in money sure do like to complain...

13 and 17 is a big gap for age groups. ill admit that the original Halo didnt really need a M rating, but it was too extreme for T. putting an in-between rating would help a lot with parents and games.

It would be a good idea. There are plenty of M-rated games that just don't seem like they earned it. The Halo games are perfect examples, and there are plenty of other games that don't quite earn the M-rating either.

I know that but I'm 15 and I want to play games on my PS3, but sense all but a few of the good games are rated M I want a rating that will let me play a gun game without my mom being there to give her sayso.

I don't think there should be. Games are rated "M" for a reason, weather it be cussing, gore or (in Assassins Creed's case) mature, touchy themes.

Ya there should be for ones that are violent and some gore but no sexuality that you don't need to be 17 to buy.
No, there are thousands of movies rated "R" that have gore but no boobs. Kids shouldn't be allowed to see that when ever they please.

Off Topic - I hate parents that buy there 8 year old kids games rated "M" like World At War & RSV2. In no way are they mature enough to be seeing guys getting limbs blown off.

Seriously, if your moms gonna let you get the game anyways, suck it up. Also, there are plenty of good games that carry "T" and "E" ratings. Just because a game brands an "M" rating doesn't make it good.

There are only 2 or 3 good games on the PS3 T and under that aren't sports games. The only ones that I know of are infamous and Little Big Planet. Also, my mom makes me research the game to make sure there's no nudidy. Plus I go to the store with my grandma sometimes and I don't want to ask her to give me permission. (PS if there are more good T or under games that you can think of Please contact me.)

No, it is meant to work like the MPAA ratings E=G, E10=PG, T=PG-13, M=R. after the creation of the E10 rating the Teen rating held more weight in which the game can have blood and swear much more, and if there is too much blood and F-bombs the game is M, not much of a middle ground anymore.

"M" needs to be split up a bit, it covers a stupidly wide range of games. I mean, Diablo II has the same rating as Playboy Mansion, ffs.
