One of my friends told me this theory about why we should stop trying to find life on other planets that he said he got from Stephen Hawking. Aparently, the universe is so obscenely big that odds are we aren't the only ones in it. And if aliens manage to find and reach us before we reach them, then they're clearly more technologically advance than us. And pretty much every encounter in human history between two civilizations with different levels of technology has ending in the more advance civilization killing/raping all the other guys and taking their stuff. So, if an entire civilization of alien critters has taken the trouble of finding us and traveling whatever absurd distance there is between us and them, they probably just want our resources. After all, it would probably be close to impossible for our two species to overcome the massive cultural/biological differences between us and actually comunicate, and even if we did there probably won't be anything we can tell them that they havn't already figured out for themselves. Does any of this sound plausible?

Maybe the other civilization, because it's so advanced, will know that war is wrong and try to make a peaceful contact. But knowing that humanity is a buch of morons, we will probably fuck it up somehow.

Aliens should be afraid of us.

Country #1: "Oh, wait, wait, they're friendly! This isn't an invasion!"
Country #2: "FIRE EVERYTHING BEFORE THEY CHANGE THEIR MINDS!"

It just kind of depends, I guess. If the Zerg showed up at our galactic front door, we're screwed. Period, end of story. The aliens would have to be really careful and befriend some small area of the planet before doing anything else, provided they actually wanted peace. If they just showed up and said "Hi, Earth!" in whatever language they speak, genocide is going to follow. I guess the endgame idea is: "If you want peace, humans can't know you exist."

If they're smart enough to be able to cross galaxies, they're smart enough to know that if they came anywhere near us we'd attack them, so I'm assuming they'll probably leave us alone.

We shall show the Aliens the art of murder. They won't mess with us ;P
An alien race should it contact us would be unimaginably more advanced than we are, and could probably kill us all in seconds
Yeah, but they probably don't know all the various crazy tricks humans have devised over time... aliens might be interested in all that stuff.

Its likely that they will communicate differently, think differently, and have societies so different that our minds won't be able to understand them

And if we've learned anything from the past: difference = conflict

That's my theory anyway.

Aliens would probably kill us. If they're desperate enough to cross the universe to reach our planet, I don't think they'll share.

Or more specifically my size 13 steel toed work boot, which in the event of an alien invasion I will insert into the handiest bodily oriface of the nearest alien (by means of a swift and decisive kick) so far that it/he/she will need some sort of futuristic boot removal surgery to remove and even then the physical and mental scars that my boot leaves will never allow that alien to forget me or my alien kicking footwear or my name isn't Ma55ter_fett... which it is.

If the aliens were smart (and violent) they would wipe us out before we would even notice

unless they're the aliens from War of the Worlds or Signs then all we have to do is wait

Humans have far greater things than aliens. If we are to die, it'll be from something we caused.

Nah.
We've got Justin Beiber and Jedward to sing at them to keep them away, we're good for a while yet.

Seriously though, I don't think we have to worry too much yet.
I haven't seen any concrete proof to disprove or prove they do or don't exist and due to this, I'm convinced that they are not out there.

Now, remember I said the middle part of this post when the invasion comes. :p

Well we really don't know yet. They way I see it there are two ways it could go.

1. The aliens will be thousands if not millions of years ahead of us, if they were still violent, they would of killed themselves along time ago, so by the time they reach Earth, they will have a peaceful society that has moved way past war, and should understand us.

2. They may have a peaceful civilization, but they might not even consider us as any sort of obstacle what so ever. It may be more like a human stepping on an ant then Columbus. If they found Earth, they could do what ever the hell they wanted to.

The fact is that these aliens might be so different we might not be anything to them, until were ready, we should be careful.

I would like to think that the advanced race is peaceful. If that's the case, it wouldn't be good for either side.

They'd probably observe us before making any hasty meetings, anyway.

Why fear us when we have already assimilated into your culture so well? Honestly, sit back, relax, and wait for those cuddly eggs to hatch out of your stomach. Would you like another "burger" and "fries?"

It's ridiculous to believe that it would be a negative to discover new life.

Either (This is assuming it's by unmanned satelite that we find them)

A: They will be less advanced tech wise than us and thus pose little threat.

B: They will be as advanced as us but like us havent achieved proper space faring capabilities, in which case they pose about the same threat as A for the moment but are a future consideration.

C: They will be advanced enough to actually reach us should we find them. They're purposes could be anything but I doubt it would be to wipe us out: exploit us maybe. But look at it this way, white men have for hundreds of years bitched that they were helping the "primitive" natives they lorded over in their colonies. And indeed the communities benifitted to a certain extent in aquiring western knowledge and technologies.

With C at best they are friendly and even trade us some of their tech. At worst they give us "loans" we cant possibly pay back and then eventually take over using bank and assets seizures. Worked for the Brits in Africa and I'm pretty sure it'll work for them on Earth.

I see no rational purpose in the destruction of the human race. Hopefully they would have grown out of that phase of religion like we have... for the most part, by said point. Work for humans or aliens, I dont care.

I would worry about ourselves rather than them, we are far more likely to destroy ourselves in the event of contact.

I would also be concerned how the religious community would react as their actions would be far more unpredictable and more violent than those willing to accept such possibilities.

If there is another race somewhere out there and they make the effort to reach us, they'll have passed a lot of other planets with more resources (and possibily better atmospheres), I highly doubt that would just be to wipe us out.
