Recently, I was having a discussion with a friend. While casually chatting, he used the term "gay" to describe something in a negative (this is only partially the reason, read onwards). Now, having 2 gay uncles but not being gay myself, I take some offense to that. After asking him about the word further, he claims that gays are a hideous abomination and should be killed. When asked why, he said it was against his religion. The weird thing is, he was never and still isn't very religious in anything but this matter. I don't know how this will play out, but could use some advice.

Tbh he really doesnt seem like a nice person.
I use the word gay (semi ironically) to describe things negatively, even my gay friends do it.. so for me thats not really the issue.
But the fact he says its against his religion, and that he thinks gay people should be killed... well thats pretty unnacceptable, personally i couldnt be friends with someone like that.

Tell me this: how old is he? I used to be the same way. Age and wisdom (lol) can really lighten people's attitudes. If he's 30 and still thinking that, he's not gonna change. If he's 15... well, most 15 year olds say stuff like that, whether they believe it or not. After all, if you're 15 and you don't hate gays, you must be gay /stupidkidlogic.

You could just try to ask him to refrain from using the term in such a manner around your presence. I doubt he's that much of an unlikable fuckwad that he wouldn't honor that at least.

Otherwise, I say weigh the entire relationship and make your decision based off that. Making a rash action on impulse may only bite you in the ass later.

He sounds like a bit of a gay to me.

Joking aside, do what you want. Why do you need to come on an internet forum to decide whether or not to keep your friend? That can't be healthy.

He's just being ignorant. If you can show him that, you should be fine. I used to be against gay people because it was against my religion (which I recently denounced faith in), but it was really because I was ignorant.

Hes a weird wanker, that's for sure.

I know this might sound cliche, but he might be one of them self-hating closet-fellows, that's the only explanation for his lack of religious fervor in all other areas other than homosexuality.

Just because you don't share the same opinions doesn't mean that he's less of a friend. What matters is you two. Only that. What you think and how you act towards others shouldn't be in the way for your friendship.

How does your friend treat you?

I'd say can his ass. It seems obvious that he's quite the pessimist. Plus he's using a commonplace answer to justify his opinions. If anyone should be punished, it should be the close-minded pricks who think they know what's best for the world, and when they're challenged they hide behind their "religion" to dodge the bullet. But then again, I don't know all of the details of who this kid is, but if his opinions or "beliefs" are in favor of something that you would oppose, I'd say it would be best for your peace of mind if you don't associate with him anymore. Besides, you can always make new friends.

Internet poll decises your friendship. Seriously. An internet poll. In-ter-net poll.

Think, man. Think.

There must be a reason you're friends and this 'homophobia' is probably just a blip or a hurdle on his road to maturity.

Please don't end your friendship because "some doodz on da internetz" told you to. That would be nearly as immature as he is.
