There's such a laundry list of problems with my Xbox at this point that I'll probably have to pay somebody to take it off my hands in a year or two when the Durango is out. Probably going to toss it, might replace it if the used ones are cheap enough.

Unlike last generation which had its great single player games to go back to once in awhile, i spend large parts of the current gen talking to friends and playing online with them. Also, the fighting game genre came back and Call of Duty happened this gen, after people get their new consoles and finish the early experiences, they are going to want to play some CoD or practice on their favorite fighting games.

The current consoles will still have center stage to begin with, unless backward compatibility is total.

I think that because the ps4 has no backwards compatibility neither will the xbox 720 or whatever it's gonna be called, so maybe this gen I will(it's not like trading them in will get me much money anyway)
What your opinion escapists?
I have all my consoles from PS1, to 3 etc. I see no need to throw it away.
Even with backwards comparability not all games work and even if they do it never hurts to keep a backup incase of hardware failure.

Get rid of old consoles? Why would I do that, I've still got many of past systems and do play them from time to time, though as of late I've not had the the space to set them all up. I can't wait to finish getting up what I need for a morgage and can get out of this apartment. The only times I've ever felt I've been fine with ditching the past system if if the new one is fully compatable with everything that the old one did. This is only realy happened with 3 jumps I've been a part of (PS1 to PS2, GameCube to Wii and Wii to WiiU) and one that I wasn't (Atari 2600 to the 7200). Both the Xbox to the 360 and the themorary PS2 to PS3 don't count to me since I couldn't use my old saves and I wouldn't want to waist the HD space if I didn't have to. Also I wouldn't be able to play DDR on the Playstation or Steel Batalion on the Xbox, two of the main games I go back to.

In the end it is just personal preferance, and may we all choose well.

I just never throw my old systems away to be honest, so I'll keep my systems. I very rarely go back to games from a previous gen because I'm more or less finished with them, but I still keep them. Like a hoarder or something.

As it is, I'm currently only looking at the PS4. Microsoft hasn't said anything that makes we want to get it yet.

It's a no-brainer on this one, especially for the PS3. I do not own one yet, though I will when "The Last of Us" comes out. People have asked why I am getting one this late in its cycle if the PS4 is just around the corner. To that I answer 1:Because it's "The Last of Us" (that usually gets most to agree) and 2:The PS4 has stated it will not be backwards compatible with PS3 games. Since there are so many PS3 exclusive games that I would like to play once I have that system (after playing "The Last of Us", duh) that there is the potential for many, many months (if not years) of game play available before I jump to a new system...if I choose to jump at all.

Of course.
I still go back to my ps2 sometimes. Some of my favorite games from last gen (Burnout Revenge or GTA San Andreas) had really lame sequels on the current consoles.

i switched fully over to PC gaming about a year ago, and before then it was 50/50 depending on what game had just come out.

Sounds smart, pay $350-$400 for a new console, and who knows how much more for accessories, upwards of $1000 for games, then bam, new console comes out, no possibility for backwards compatibility, buy new accessories for it as well as games, then maybe, maybe hope to get about $200-$300 for selling all the old stuff at a gamestop. I've never sold a game or a console because I knew I wouldn't even get half of what I paid for to get them and there's the chance that I'd want to play the old games again - a lot of new games have a bad reputation of sucking over the past few years.
So to answer your question, yes.

I never saw the reason to ditch a console simply because the next generation came out, regardless if backwards compatibility was available. I really don't see why some people are so focused on backwards compatibility when if you have the games for the older console, then you should have the old console. I understand nothing lasts forever, my Playstation 1 while still in working condition does have 1 minor/major issue where in which after about 30 minutes of gameplay it just resets, it's not a big deal if the game has a good save system. Digression aside, trading in you old console so you get a 100 dollars off a new one never seemed like a good deal to me, in the short run it seems okay, but eventually you're going to want to play some older games.

Why would I? It isn't taking up much space and I have a ton of games on it. I could care less about backwards compatibility.

Well I wasn't really planning on buying them, but if I did, I hadn't planned on just throwing my 360 out the damn window.

Of course you keep them, why would you not? At least until they break.

I shouldn't have to, but as it stands, I'll keep my 360 yes. I really think they should invest in the long term and build a system that can be upgraded each generation without changing the way it works on a fundamental level. Then again, the dynamic of the 'console generation' may be coming to an end, so... Hopefull we won't have to deal with this question for to much longer.

going to say 'yes you should' cause even if you can play old games on it, it's likely going to cost you more money, and why pay for something you already have?

I still have my N64. So many good memories. Other than that I've migrating over to PC gaming, it just seems more cost effective to me. Oh, and mods, mods are good.

I still have a gamegear as well as a heap of other consoles, sooo, no i'll be keeping my PS3, besides, i like playing older games, that and the trade in value on games is poor at best

I couldn't imagine a reason why anyone would answer "no" to this poll. Unless it was a few months at least after the release of the new console. But with the nature of gaming nowadays, with the digital distribution and all the old games available on PSN, that are NOT able to be carried to PS4 (at least for now), then I don't see why anyone would want to throw all those away.

Given how I just finished playing my SNES, no. I own for life.
Hah yeah. I've been playing SNES during lunchbreaks recently. I forget the game but I played something new recently and it ruined my day so bad I had to go back and play Super Mario World and DKC just to calm my gaming nerves.

Until games consoles perfect backwards compatibility, (which could be never considering they're not even trying), there's no choice about it- if you want to play the games, you have to keep the old consoles.

why in the hell would i get rid of my old consoles? especially when the newer gens AREN'T BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE?!

man i still have my N64 and all my games. i used to have a SNES but my dad got rid of it when i got the N64. that was a very sad and confusing day. we gave it to a poor family we knew, so that was nice.

anyways, its ridiculous to get rid of your older console for the better one, its not like a obsolete computer, or a old outdated chair. once you get rid of it, you cant play its games ever again unless you either waste money and re buy the damn games via download on the newer gen or, download emulators and play then on your computer.

i do want to get rid of my Gamecube, but thats only because the Wii is backwards compatible and can play GameCube games. it can even use the gamecube controllers And the save stick thing so yah, dont need a GC anymore.

if i had a PS1 i'd get rid of that one since again my PS2 and play all PS1 games, use the same controller and save stick. everything else i will always keep ontill broken and i will re buy it hopefully.
