Don't quote me on this, but I'm fairly sure that where I live you're more likely to come across someone who only speaks Ojibwe than communicates with sign language. If we're considering it a language here, then there are definitely more useful ones to learn.

I used to know quite a bit of sign language. Unfortunately all I can remember now is the alphabet 'yes', 'no' and 'turtle'.

No doubt sign language is useful, learning alternate ways of communication always are, but in a pinch if you really need to communicate with a deaf person you could probably cover by writing things down.
