Poll: Sims 3 soon to come to the console, really?

The Sims has a reputation for overdoing itself and having all the profit squeezed out of it before it's tossed aside for the next actual Sims game to be released. So, it was no surprise to me that the Sims 3 was going to be coming to console. But, I assume I'm right in thinking that few people preferred the console versions of the Sims to the PC version of it. Now, as someone who never played the Sims 3, I can't really say it was bad or good. However, what I can say is that it looked like the exact same sort of gameplay as the Sims 2 with upped graphics and from what I've heard all the stuff you can do in Sims 3 could have been added with an expansion pack entitled 'Space using expansion #56437'*

So, will any of you be buying the console Sims 3, or will you be sitting back and getting on with the other games out there? What do you think of the Sims and how it's turned out??

*For those who dislike exaggerations and wish to tell me there aren't that many expansions; be quiet.

I might get it, depending on the way it's done. The Sims doesn't have a great track-record of console release quality, so I'm a bit skeptical. But my netbook won't run The Sims 3 since it has two display adapters and apparently the Sims 3 hates that. Thanks a lot, EA.

So, provided it's done well, then yeah. I'd totally get it. I always enjoyed the Sims games (The vanilla games. I never got any expansion packs), and I'm sure my wife would like it too. Since I'm always trying to get her more into gaming, something like this would be great!

I played Sims Bustin' Out on the ps2. Didn't like it, and I'm not giving console-Sims another chance.

Sims 3 isn't really that good, either :(

While I know that previous endeavours onto consoles for the Sims have ended badly, there used to be a much larger hardware gap between PCs and consoles. The console versions always looked worse and were watered down. However, in this current generation, I wouldn't think that The Sims 3 would be any different from the PC version bar some interface/control changes.

That said, I've never played any Sims games aside from the Sims 2 on PC, and I have no intention of buying the Sims 3 regardless of platform.

Well from what I've read in OXM it sounds like it could be rather good... that is to say when compared to past console versions. There is supposedly going to be a mass of DLC for it in the ways of expansion packs and user submitted content as well as other additions. It's also going to have facebook integration so it has a more social feel to it (which will reduce the self realisation that you're a little bit sadder than you used to be). It sounds like it'll be good when put up with the past experiments with consoles but still won't be as good as the PC versions.

I have to agree with you there, I won't be buying a Sims game for a long time, if ever again. But as I said above, the game seems to have a lot more going for it than the previous ones did. The closing gap between what can be done on a console and what can be done on PC (there will always be one, PC will always be better) means that the game should perform better than the others as well. The controls are something that will be difficult to overcome by developers, they never really cam close to the PC and I think the best way to beat that is to make the Sims on console a crossover between how it is now and a 3rd person game where you take control of one character and approach objects that you wish to interact with in an Oblivion kind of way.

It's a shame really, I'll not know how good it really is unless I buy it, but I never got the PC version and that should always tower over the console version so I don't lose much.

Sadly, unfond memories of The Sims: Bustin Out and The Urbz shall ensure I shall be avoiding this. I don't have a console anyway.

I sort of like the sims. The original was probably the best. It's a good timewaster, although not as good as Simcity.
You know what? The depressing reality is, I had The Urbz, and I enjoyed it.

This was long before I met you, though. >_>

The problem with the console versions of The Sims is that they try to include a linear storyline to fit in with the console market. You have to follow a certain path and deviate from it and I found that incredibly annoying given that it's The Sims and you should be able to do whatever you want.

I have it on my 4 year old Macbook, so yeah I am going to buy it so that I can actually play it without it crashing.

Just like to say... no, you couldn't. The social and exploratory aspect was fixed, so now the entire town is going all at once, and there aren't any loading screens.

Also: Seriously? Has console Sims ever worked in the past?

Well I never really looked at the game in great detail. I was assuming using word of mouth and screenshots so it wasn't exactly accurate.

And I think you can agree that if they did it right then I'm sure they'd make an okay console version of it at least. But they can't seem to separate themselves from the PC game enough to do it.

They always turn the console Sims into gimmicks.

On the PC i'm fairly sure it's just a sandbox to create characters, build your house and expand your city. Then they port it to consoles and make it some obscure spin-off where you do missions and travel between levels.

The handheld ports are the worst, my mum must have like 10 crappy Sims games for DS. No matter how many times they turn out crap she goes and buys another one *facepalm*

If they can make a console port that's exactly like the PC version then i'll look into it.

Im not quite sure why everyone hates on the Sims so hard.

As a Programmer I find all of the Sims games absolutely fascinating, the code for that game is amazing and every "New" Sims franchise takes place once the Engine has been stretched to its breaking point.

They cant do anything more with The Sims or the Sims 2 without risking the entire thing breaking under the weight, so they condense all the features down as best they can with a brand new engine, fill in the gaps and then continue taking the game and the player on the journey.

The move from The Sims 2 to the Sims 3 where its an open world with every Sim living out their life was incredible. The Entire engine had to be rewritten in order to make it work and it pulls it off beautifully.

Also, The Sims is the single largest selling PC Franchise of all time... this means a lot more than just the ladies are playing The Sims, which means there are a large number of guys who buy and play the games... yet still go out and trash and denounce the game in public for fear people will think less of them for it.

Its a fucking game, play it, enjoy it and if you don't like the series... don't fucking buy it.

Its really not that hard.

Woah, calm down. I don't recall me ever saying that I specifically don't like the series. I do remember saying that the console versions of the game weren't ever as good as the PC version. I also remember asking for whether people would buy the console version of the Sims 3. We are entitled to have our opinion of the games we've played and we are allowed to criticise the game as much as we like.

Like you said the games engine has been 'stretched to it's breaking point' and is the biggest selling PC franchise ever. This just further promotes my point that the games are starting to be released because they know that they can make a good profit off it and not because they generally want to. But, then again, they may be doing it out of their enjoyment, who knows? Whatever they do it for their games are good on PC, I have to say that they are enjoyable, if a little similar, but they aren't as good on console. They fail to bring the sandbox into it and, like said in the post before you, try to add a set of missions to the game. They just don't cut it, I'm sure you'll agree, from a gamers point of view they aren't as good.
