I started out on rock music, a mostly male dominated industry and slowly moved on to indie rock, a more gender equal landscape. And I realise, that female voices actually appeal to me more.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Patti Smith, Long Blondes, Tilly and the Wall, Earlimart, Cat Power(!), Camera Obscura for some examples.

I still hate Sade though, nothing to do with the singing I guess

What are your thoughts?

It all depends on the genre. And what kind of voice the singer have. But most of the bands I like have male singers, so I guess I prefer male singers?

It depends entirely on the song. Some tunes, some lyrics and some styles give a 'better' experience to one gender or another, but it's impossible for me to give a general answer.

Well, if you look at it from a percentages point of view, I definitely prefer bands with female singers.

Actually strike that. Most of the time I don't even like the band they're in; I just prefer the female singer. [small]coughParamorecough[/small]

I find the whole "girl rocker" thing to be endlessly attractive. I saw a thoroughly "okay" band a while back called Damone, whose lead singer, under any other circumstance, I would have thought looked like an unapprocahable, kind of dirty skank. But simply due to the fact that she was on stage with a guitar, I developed a pretty palpable desire to have sex with her.

The allure of rock & roll, I guess.

I wouldn't say I prefer I either. I look at it on a case by case basis. Although in my music library there are more male singers than female, this is merely due to the fact there are far more male singers in rock bands (rock is a pretty large percentage of my overall collection which is already pretty large) than female. Paramore, Be Your Own Pet and No Doubt wouldn't work with a lead male because it doesn't fit into the style and vice versa with say, Jimmy Eat World or Weezer. That said, I don't think it relies entirely upon the song, lyrics or style but more on the band. Lyrics can be changed, tunes can be transposed but if Radiohead fired Thom Yorke and replaced him with Beyonce then it just wouldn't work.

I'm not entirely sure why, but I feel like posting this link:

But to be a little more ontopic, I'm indifferent. As long as it sounds good I'm fine with both.

Well it depends, if you ask me no one can vocalise the beauty and harmony of jazz the way a woman can. I have this friend who works as a Jazz singer at a local cafe and I used to come around regularly on friday nights just to hear her sing because her voice was so soothing and she vocalised the melody so well. Classy stuff, seriously I think while there are great male Jazz singers, Jazz will always be a female genre to me.

But rock and roll and music of a similar genre I feel is less about being blassy and more about being powerful and sometimes defiant and while there have certainly been some great female vocalists in that genre ultimatley I see more strength and power in the deeper voice of a man who can vocalise. So for rock and music similar I would go with men.

No offense to girl singers but I just prefer male singers, that doesn't mean female singers are better or worse I just prefer listening to a male singer.

Male singers mostly, because the vast majority of female singers sound identical. You know, the mainstream poppy-sort.

I do love a good female vocalist though.

I honestly couldn't care.

It's about their talent, the song, the music, their performance and not just their gender.

Seeing as I have a terrible taste in music, and am one of those people that listens to mainstream songs.

For Rap and R&B I prefer male voices, because I can't really relate to women songs. Unless they want to talk about gettin' Hoes and pimpin' their caddy for their baby mama

Which would be hot.

Can't think of a single female singer I like, actually...
Oh stop kidding about Max, you know as well as I do about your thing for Hannah Montana. Yes, yes, I know you told me about it in confidence but you should let the real You show once in a while.

Let the world know about your appreciation for all things Miley Cyrus.

I don't like singers in general. though female voices are easier on my ears, particularly Japanese ones.

My top10 artists on Last.fm are all female (or bands with female vocalists), and the top25 has 3 male vocalists. So I'm pretty sure I prefer the female singers.

I like both male and female singers. I think the female singers can add more definition to the lyrics of a song. And makes them stand out slightly.

Difficult question....on one hand, since I'm an egocentric prcik, male singers appeal to me because it's closer to the sound of my own voice =P while female singers are just good in general. /attempt to be slightly funny

Let's sum up the different singers I like, shall we?
Male: Dexter Holland (the offspring), Roy Khan (Kamelot), Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Billie joe armstrong (Green Day), Steven Tyler (aerosmith), Lemmy Kilminster (Mötorhead), Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Corgan, Rob zombie, the guys from smash mouth, Journey, bowling for soup and avenged sevenfold.

Female: Simone Simmons (Epica), Tarja and annette (Nightwish), that chick from Paramount.....and that's about it.

Sorry girls, the guys just outweigh ya. Still, there's a lot of good female singers out there, they're just in the wrong kind of genre for me (hip hop RnB and s*** like that)

In general I prefer male singers. Though that doesn't make the pain of Tarja Turunen leaving Nightwish hurt any less. :(
