Depends on which one works for the song. Male voices are better with more hard rock/metal type songs, but females are better for more calming songs, eurodance, and other things I can't quite identify at the moment.

Also, I'm one of the few people here who likes J-pop, so female singers get a bit of a leg-up there.

Nightwish, Within Temp, and Flyleaf are the only songs I have with female vocals. Dunno if Flyleaf counts for me though, as I only have one song and I rarely listen to it.

Depends entirely on the song, really. Imagine a male singer singing this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYiyVpyLlGc] or especially this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXhx40DcU6Y]. Or a female singing this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dleB2PA1U-A]. It's not gonna work. Males can't reach those eerily beautiful tones and females can't spit their words the way males can.

I completely agree.
I wouldn't like hearing a girl sing anything by my old favorites Simon and Garfunkle, but I wouldn't like hearing a guy sing anything by, say, Regina Spektor. Some songs are just that way for me, and I agree with Amnestic: No way I could give a generalized answer.

Depends on the mood and style of the song. No defiinitive answer for me. Most songs i have are with male vocals, but some of my favourites have female ones. (Or duets) But what i can say: if it is a song about love and longing i prefer male vocals (i don't know... i don't trust women to have that feelings *g*). But if it is about sex or "intimacy", i do not want to hear a man (That would make him a... strange person).

Just some weird thing i just recently observed about myself.

Some things sound betetr with a female voice, others with a male.

I think thingslike Evanescence sound better with a female singing, for example, but Cage the Elephant soun better with a male singer.

I don't think it matters that much. As long as they do it well, and it fits the style of music, I'm not that fussy (even though most of my collection features male singers).

Although I think more girls have better singing voices than boys, my favourite singers of all time (Matt Bellamy, Robert Plant and Thom York) are all male, so I guess I would have to say male.

Say what! Did you just call indie rock a gender equal landscape? I mean, sure it may have more female singers than hard rock, but no way is it equal. I mean, seriously, it's way male dominated. I mean, the girls tend to get a lot of coverage and stuff, well because they're girls and it's less common, and the awkward indie boys want to have a wank over them.

I do think that it's been balancing out more recently, but idk, stereotypical indie music is... male, really.
