In any case, Diablo 2 is king -> a HUGE campaign, playable alone or with friends.
Feh. The Baldur's Gate series is better, and has a longer campaign as well.

I don't mind that kind of multiplayer at all: co-op is always a good thing, because you keep the campaign, but get to play it through with friends. As long as the single player works fine too, I'm all for implementing co-op in games. My problem is when they decide to put in a versus mode (a la GTA IV) because they feel they have to in order to be competitive in today's market, which often (although not always) results in the single player being worse.

Singleplayer absolutely needs attention. A 5 hour campaign and a few multiplayer modes is not enough for a game.

In my opinion, a game should focus on single or multi-player.

A single player game shouldn't have a multiplayer mode, except maybe a co-op campaign option.
A multiplayer game shouldn't have a campaign, or anything related to single player.

Developers should focus a lot more on the single player and less on the graphics though. Currently, I get maybe 6 hours gameplay out of a 60 euro game, a game I have to run at low graphical settings because there are maybe 10 people in the world who would notice the graphical decrease.

I don't play multiplayer. Reason one: other people suck. Reason two: I don't want to pay subscription fees. Gaming is my chance to escape the world. I usually boot up the console after a day of work as part of some much-needed alone time. If I wanted to socialize, I'd leave the house. So it's pretty frustrating to see single player campaigns get shorter and shorter in some games.

I would appreciate it if the single player AND the multiplayer got an equal amount of attention. Because in my honest opinion, no multiplayer can ever tip the awesomeness that is a single player experience. But I'd hate to see one being suckier than the other because the other got the attention.

I think we've advanced multiplayer enough, we do need to start looking a single player games again largely because while multiplayer is good, it doesn't take an expert to see that it's days are numbered.

How long do you think it will be before games like Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 (which are often cited as great games because of their multiplayer) are completely fogotten?

My feelings exactly. The biggest problem personally with multiplayer is that it relies on you having to play with racists, arseholes and 12 year old's and still be a good experience. But probably the biggest reason why i don't play MP is because it looses all immersion and relies heavily on competition rather than just the individuals experience.

Agree completely. I let my live subscription run out. Now I mostly play adventure games on the pc. Sam and Max, Strong bad, Monkey Island. Easy to get lost in these games and the humour they provide is very welcome after a long day of work.

No. I actually quite like the length games are now. As long as there is some decent replay value, a 10 hour game seems worth it to me. What is it, £10 or so to buy a DVD for 2 hours entertainment (not counting Special Features) But with a game, it's £40 for 10 hours entertainment, and mabye some multiplayer too. Seems pretty fair to me.

Yes, single player need more focus in games that feature them; if you want to make a great multiplayer, don't do the single player (i.e. TF2).

Also, in what way does COD differ itself from other games when it comes to single player vs. multiplayer?

I am liking games which give you the option of playing exactly the same levels either as single player or multi player coop. At least this way a similar ammount of effort has gone into developing both styles of play.

crap single player, to me, means that the devs forgot the roots of gaming, where it all began.

I think it should get more attention in single player games.

If a game is made for multiplayer, say demigod, battlefield etc. then it doesn't really need a good single-player campaign, cause it's a multiplayer game.
Adding AI so you can play single player is good, and should be done, it also gives you a chance to learn the game before entering the online fray filled with so-caleld "pr0s" ready to yell at anyone who doens't play as good as themselves.

If the game is a single player game (zelda, metroid etc) then the game should be made with single player in mind. If they can add some multiplayer as well then by all means do so, but just don't do it by cutting the SP part. Multiplayer in SP-games are ment to prolong the game, not make up for mistakes in the SP part.

Also gief more co-op games which are like SP but for 2-4 players, and not just co-op as in you play with these dudes against those other dudes (team multiplayer)
