Fairly simple really - the game doesn't play 'optimal' in 3rd person though it looks better - if I'm travelling I like to showcase my character in 3rd person, do some minor combat (with weaker creatures that get killed easily) and if I'm doing a quest that involves a bit more complicated combat I'll switch to first person to have more precision.

For combat/indoor stuff/sneaking I'll hop into first person for the (perceived?) accuracy but all the rest of the time I like to run around in third person. Helps me keep things in view (damn bears) and usually gives me a better view of my surroundings. Although if I'm playing on console I'll keep it in third person all the time because of that damn FOV.

I guess this really applies to any game where you have the option to switch between first person and third person views at will.

Most in first person, but I have been known to place it on shoulder-view in third person.

Depends on how I'm feeling. I also use the Third person to peer around corners while sneaking and to get a better view of my surroundings when fighting large enemies like giants or dragons in open areas.

I mostly use 1st person, but switch to 3rd for conversations and, if I see them coming, those brief, cutscene-like occasions when I can control the camera but not my character (such as when talking to daedra etc.) I like to keep both participants in view if possible.

Also, right before I save my game, I find it useful to switch to 3rd person and swing the camera around to face my character first. That way, the save file picture becomes a portrait of my character. I tend to have several separate playthroughs going at once, with different characters, and this is a great way to quickly tell the various save slots apart!

I use first person for combat and third person for exploring. Being in first person lets you use your hearing and spacial awareness to know where enemies are and it feels more up close and personal instead of watching someone kick ass.

I use both. In combat situations, first person is personally more immerse for me. However, third-person is great for stealth or if I want to role-play abit.

I struggle to play any first person exclusive game, i bounce off objects, walls screw up jumps ect.
and the field of view is terrible.
infact point b is basically the cause of point a.

so no, i spend as little time as possible in first person..
generally i only use it to zoom in close on something or to use a bow

I prefer the third person, but switch to first for sneaking and shooting. Personally, I wouldn't play TES if there was no choice and you had to play first person- I don't think I'll ever play an entirely first-person game. I just don't enjoy it, is all.
I am not, and will never be, any of my characters. Depending on the game they're either fleshed out characters who are (often vastly) different to me, or empty vessels to be used simply for the pleasure of the game. I don't feel the need to "see through their eyes", and I find it inconvenient and difficult to really make sense of the surroundings like that. So, for me personally, no up side and all down side to constant first person view.

Plus what's the point in customising your appearance or having an interesting character design if you never see your character? Why bother with any effort at all?

I find that a majority of the time spent in 3rd person view (hardly any) is because I like to admire my character making handiwork. Vain about my own character I guess. I spend more time looking at my characters than looking at myself in the mirror outside of the game. lol

I use both allot.

I use first person for combat and conversations, I use third person for running around, jumping around and mostly everything else.

You see more in third person so it's better for movement because you can see where you are putting your feet. Helps avoid traps and stuff allot easier too.

Conversations work better from first person because you get more immersed and combat is better in first person because aiming with melee is easier.

My character is an archer. Do you have any idea how much of a pain in the arse shooting a bow is in 3rd person? It's not good. Needless to say, all combat is performed through 1st person.

I'll often roleplay and walk through cities and towns in 3rd person though. Ya know, soak up that ambience.

I spend most of my time in Skyrim/Fallout in 3rd person.

I enter 1st person to pick up/use really small things (Often picking stuff up like coins/bobby pins/gems etc) though at least for Fallout I mod it so that you're centred while in 3rd person (Rather than being off to the side, making aiming nigh impossible) to make it easier to use free-aim.

I prefer to see my character, the animations of weapons and such as well as a wider FOV, I just feel silly running around as nothing more than a pair of arms (Also the whole FPS view making it seem like I'm some sort of idiot running around with weapons held up to my face all the time...)

I don't find it harder to become immersed either, especially since I become immersed in other 3rd person games easily (Games like Mass Effect come to mind)

Always first. Tried third person briefly, but felt it was hard to loot stuff(iirc), so it didn't last very long.

I played in third person except when I was in combat. I found it easier to fight in first person for some reason.

Exclusively first person in all three. Morrowind I played in third person, largely because of how detached combat was. Skyrim, I simply have a better feel for distance and the like in first person and it makes exploring dungeons more interesting. That said, some of the combat animations are really strange in first person since it isn't always obvious what it is exactly that you're doing in a particular move.

First person perspective for TES II-V, FO3, and FONV.

If a game has a choice between first and third, and it was developed primarily for third, I'm happy to play in third (Vampire: Bloodlines comes to mind). Otherwise, I prefer first person.

For me, it adds immersion, greater connection to exploration, and a greater connection to my character.

3rd person is for mods... What the point is getting armour mods, etc. and not being able to see them? Also, using setscale kinda forces you into 3rd person as the 1st person camera never alters, regardless of your height
1st person otherwise.

I tried it in 1st person because I wanted to see the combat, and I was sorely disappointed. I played it on the 360, and not a PC though. If I was into Skyrim, I'd play it mostly in 3rd person. For arrows or any kind of shooting like magic etc, I might switch to 1st person. Dragon's Dogma kind of switches to 1st person a little bit when you're an archer and you fire arrows. It makes things easier and it's really cool to have the over the shoulder perspective.

I play third person unless I am in cramped spaces or when I need to aim.

Playing these type of games in first person just feels very weird to me and doesn't immerse me at all. I need to see my character in order for that to happen.
