Completely agree about the writing, I think BioWare set a great example when it comes to RPG writing, but then again - it's much easier to write a JRPG than a WRPG.
Wait, are you saying that Bioware games are Japanese? They aren't, they're from Canada, making them a WRPG.

Meanwhile, I am not sure what I'll do when I get it. I'll just start off by exploring, and when I find an interesting quest I'll do it. Sure, the main quest will be one of the first ones that I do, but I won't follow it like it's the only thing I've got to do.
What I mean is that it follows the very linear structure of most JRPGs as opposed to the general open world setting of WRPGs.

I don't know yet. Just like you, I enjoyed the sidequests more than the mainquest in Oblivion but I did finish it at some point.
For Skyrim, I'll probably start the mainquest and see how it is and at some point start doing the sidequests, just like in Oblivion. But I can't be too sure yet, maybe the mainstory will be so immersive and entertaining that I'll forget about everything else.

I'll likely focus on the main quest primarily. I'm sure along the way I'll get side tracked quite a bit but I have no intention to get anywhere close to 100 percent completion. I figure my first playthrough will only be about 20 hours as a result (probably playing as a sword and board paladin class).

My second playthrough is then the real deal. I now have a feel for what the game is like, how the mechanics work and what playstyle I want to focus on. I'll master what I enjoy and explore as much of the world as possible along the way.

This plan is tentative on how much I enjoy the main story. I had every intention to do this in Oblivion but diverted solely to side quests once I realized I'd stop playing the game entirely if I kept with the main quest. I don't think I've ever been more bored with a games main quest than with Oblivion.

Probably explore a bit. I did that in Oblivion before I went to the Imperial City. Usually encountered some side missions on the side, so I'll go for side missions.

However, I do wanna slay me some dragons. Will they only appear in the world after a main story quest?

while I enjoyed the main quest in oblivion, the factions were probably the best quests, (the dark brotherhood is so unfair, if you want to be part of an evil faction you have to be stealthy, and it has all the best stuff) and it's hard to get on a video game for story

Well according to my RPG rule of thumb: I will always complete sidequests first for rewards/reputation before going towards the main storyline/questline.

So there's your answer.

I'm going to make a Beeline for the Dark Brotherhood's quest line. I loved it so much in Oblivion I just can't wait to start murderin' again.

ok here is my plan for skyrim.
Will play as female wood elf. First will join a guild, get to the top of it, then buy a nice big house and find beautiful wife, wthen will do side quests and only when satisfied or cant find more quests will complete my playthrough with main story.

You know what? May just do that myself. I completely forgot about the relationship possibilities in Skyrim. Here's hoping the conversation system isn't quite as poor as Oblivion's system.

I'll follow the main quest line, take a break from it when it seems appropriate so I can explore, travel the world for a while, then rejoin the main quest, helping people along the way.

Do ALL the things!

Seriously no one is ever going to see me again -.-

And yeah the main quest in Oblivion is pretty suckworthy tbh. I have never actually completed it. Also I absolutely despise oblivion gates..ugh.
You only needed to do 3 oblivion gates to complete the main quest and all the others were optional so that's not really a valid reason to not complete the MQ.

Anyway I'll start off with doing some of the main quest in Skyrim until I get sidetracked by other things like factions, random strangers, a candidate to marry and so on.

In what way did I say it was the reason I didn't complete it?

I just don't like them at all. It was a completely seperate point.
