Okay so the guys at Bethesda had this to say about armour in Skyrim

The armor system is very similar to Oblivion?s. The main difference is that the upper and lower body armors, the cuirass and greaves, have been combined into one piece. This helps create armor styles that have the look we needed for Skyrim. In most of the Nordic designs we created, the upper armor would completely cover the lower armor, making it unnecessary. We get much better visual results combining those pieces, and it renders a lot faster too, so we can put more people on screen, so that was an easy tradeoff for us. We can also make a lot more armors now, so the number and variation types are more than we?ve ever had.
It has resulted in comments like these.

You took our armor to have more people on screen> thats fucking stupid take something else. Now we cant change the way armor looks or more customization to it and enchanting our armor is still reduced yeah thatnks alot. FIRE the dipshit who decided that crap.
~A real comment from the Elder Scrolls facebook page.

Why is having pants and chestpiece as one piece of armour is such a big deal? How is it game changing in any way?

Considering the Nord guy they use to show the game off is practically naked from the waist up so they have obviously considered the naked chest option. I just don't understand why this is such an issue. So can anyone with this point of view explain it to me?

Mostly I have gotten the impression that they want to chameleon thier armour to 100% and cheese thier way through the game?

I just don't understand...:<

Just so ya know, I'm a PC gamer who likes stats....

It's not an issue.

It's not even a problem that appears solely with video game development:

People don't want change. Then they ***** about how nothing has changed.

It's because of the crippling fear of Streamlining. To RPG players, that word is comparable to the Holocaust nowadays.

There will be a mod that will undo this *starts praying*

Anyway, the problem is the same with nearly everything these days, Less options means simplifying (streamlining) but does also mean less customisation.

customisation is good in a game like TES as it is one of it's main features of the franchise.

Stupid choice IMHO. It might be easier to design, but I like my options. And perhaps jumping around in nothing but leggings punching people, but that might just be little old inebriated me...

Gamers will find a reason to complain about anything.

One element of a game changes, you're bound to have a legion of fans screaming that it is ruined forever.

Frankly, I don't think it's significant enough to care.

I think mostly I'm just confused about how it negatively effects gameplay. As I played most of Oblivion as a stealth character I spent alot of time wearing the dark brotherhood armour which is all in one piece except the hood.

Perhaps it's more of a plate wearer issue? That's not really a play style I go for.

"In most of the Nordic designs we created, the upper armor would completely cover the lower armor, making it unnecessary."

This is what I have a problem with. They're talking about armor like people only use it for how it looks and not for, you know, the stats.

Why doesn't Bethesda just drop the act and make Skyrim an action game? It's clear they don't give a shit about RPGs anymore. Can they just drop the pretense already and say they just want to make action games?

I really don't give a crap. "Ooh, my cuirass and grieves are now one piece of armor instead of two because it is closer to the Nordic traditions that the game draws heavily from." This is pretty much a non-issue.

I'm used to having mismatched armor in my attempt at having the best stats I possibly can and I don't much like having the experience of wearing armor from many different sets taken away. I understand their reasoning, but it doesn't mean I have to like it.

edit: to be clear it won't stop me from enjoying the game, it is just something I will miss.

Are you fucking twats kidding me? Your really bitching about something as trivial as how many armor pieces there are? Really? Have you SEEN the dragons? have you SEEN the visual style and combat? have you SEEN the amazing perk set-up? What the fuck is it with all you ungratefull little jackoffs that makes you ignore every amazing thing bethesda does for you just so you can pick out the minor changes and act like its the end of the fucking world? You idiots did the same thing when mysticisim was axed. Who gives a FUCK if the actual skill is gone?! All the spells are still there! Who gives a fuck if theres 5 armor pieces now? I like it because it makes it so that i dont have to buy 9 fucking items every time i level my character up 4 or 5 times! Jesus CHRIST!
Calm down. Most of us don't care.

I'm glad, hunting down that one last pauldron or gauntlet of rare armor in Morrowind got tedious for me after a while. Wasn't so much of a problem in Oblivion because, thanks to the FUBAR scaling system, at a high enough level every bandit and their dog got Daedric/Glass armor. Despite them supposedly being so rare that single pieces are treated like family heirlooms. Hell in Morrowind only one guy wore a (almost) full suit of Daedric and he was a millenia old Telvanni wizard that could fry you with a glance.

Dirty mushroom dweller, hoarding all those goodies... *grumbles like the greedy Hlaalu he is*

Change is fine, when it's good. Don't act like a moron, because your not.

The fact is, we should be seeing features and customization options added, not taken away.

Now, that said, this doesn't strike me as a big issue. But it sucks seeing player choice and options being stripped away. As others have said, Morrowind had more options then Oblivion and now Oblivion more then Skyrim.

I'm not so worried about Skyrim (as say, with DA2 or the like) but I have seen another step towards action game and another away from RPG.

Five seperate pieces of armor could actually be considered an improvement, seeing as Fallout 3 had a grand total of three armor slots (counting glasses as a type of armor). As long as I can have asymmetrical arms, I'm happy.
