I sided with the Stormcloaks and I regret my decision every day. I only did it in the first place because I felt my Nord char should. I should have gone with my gut instinct to join the Imperials and drag my feet a little before deciding war is dumb and abandoning it.
The battle for Whiterun was AWESOME though. Fun stuff.

Hell it's a game, I joined the Dark Brotherhood not because I thought it befitting my character, or because I thought that killing innocents is a good idea, but because it's fun to do in game.
Okay, Okay. Battle of Whiterun was awesome. At least I had fun butchering Imperials for the Na-Stormcloaks. The Stormcloaks. Them. _>

All factions in this game have their upsides and there downsides, none of them are perfect, example

Imperials- banning of Talos worship
Stormclokes- kinda racist

For me i sided with myself
What about you Escapists?
Stormcloaks as a whole are not racist. You need to get back in the game and stop viewing it from the eye's of a child(It's not black and white), some of them are sure. But the drunken douchebag and the lowclass bum ex-soldier in Windhelm do not represent all of the Stormcloaks, keep that in mind. Also the Dunmer in Morrowind in TESIII Were pretty bigotted and racist towards outsiders. The Stormcloaks goal is to free Skyrim from Imperial rule/tyranny. Not to throw out all non-nords. However Ulfric is a scumbag as he's only using the Stormcloaks to further his own agenda wich is to become High King.

The IMPERIALS are the racists. A human only run empire with nothing but humans as leaders, subjugating everyone else to follow their rule and laws. Thats racist and supremacist. Nords ruling their own lands make sense atleast.

Banning Talos worship is something they only did to buy time. If they win the war you can bet yer ass they would reinstate Talos worship. However the Empire is crumbling. It's got few provinces left. What... Highrock andCyrodiil and maybe Skyrim depending on who you win the war for. And speaking of RACISTS General Tullius is the biggest one. His contempt and hatred for nords is obvious and he doesn't even hide it. And don't give me that bullshit about the "Grey Quarter" makes Stormcloaks/Ulfric racists. The Dark Elves who live there were poor when they arrived. Windhelm took them in as THEY ARE REFUGEES FLEEING MORROWIND. What the fuck were they expecting? 5 Star Hotel lodgings?.

My main is a nord. So I went Stormcloaks. Rather be a free warrior than a mindless whore and slave to a filthy dying racist empire who only tries to sink its decaying claws into Skyrim to take it down with it. HAMMERFELL STOPPED THE DOMINION IN ITS TRACKS WITHOUT THE EMPIRE! And so will the TRUE sons and daughters of Skyrim. The Empire is finished.

But speaking of racism and bigotry. Look at the Aldmeri Dominion/Thalmor. They might as well have Nazi symbols and Swastikas allover the place. They're cleansing Valenwood and comitting genocide allover the place. And conquering everyone else to subjugate them under Elven rule as everyone else is inferior to elves.

Siding with stormcloaks just begs the trouble. All Ulfric cares are his nord bretheren and he doesn't realize that they don't have enough power to oppose thalmor
WROOOOOOOOONG! Hammerfell stopped the Aldmeri Dominion. The Aldmeri dominion and the Thalmor aren't as powerful as you think they are. Skyrim houses the best, strongest and most staunch warriors of Tamriel. And do keep in mind that both leaders of the Stormcloaks have experience in waging war on the Aldmeri as both were in the great war. So you're so wrong its embarresing.

the empire seems nicer than the stormcloaks (its better to ban one religion than to ban every race except nords.) however the empire has surrounded itself with horrible friends such as the Thalmor and those occulus guys
both of which i knife away to the void everytime i see one of them.
You sir are a fool. Stormcloaks aren't out to ban other races or force them out of Skyrim. Their goal is to break free from Imperial rule. And do keep in mind that THIS IS TAKING PLACE DURING A CIVIL FUCKING WAR. They can't let anyone and everyone past their gates.
JEEZ! calm the hell down! just because someone says one little thing does not mean you have to drop bombshells of elder scrolls encyclopedia on them, most people are not completely knowledgeable in the complete lore. And stop being a dick about it!

Windhelm/Solitude: Okay, where do you get the impression that Elisif is "incompetent"? She is inexperienced, sure, but she was thrust into that position very abruptly and she is still in mourning (and to call that "moping" is very insensitive). She might not know all the nuances of rule and might over- or under-compensate as a result, but she still has advisers to keep her on the right track (which is what "advising" is for).
Yeah, it's probably a good thing for the Imperials that Elsif is willing to listen to her advisers. I seem to recall overhearing words to this effect quite vividly:

"Lady Elsif, we've had reports of disappearances in the mountains."
"SEND IN THE ENTIRE LEGION!"
"Yes, Lady, about that..."
She mentioned sending a legion, not the whole Legion. Granted, a full legion of troops would be overkill regardless, but it's nowhere near the amount you believe.
Oh yeah, I know I was using hyperbole, and it would only be about 5,000 troops if we're sticking with the roman parallels. It just struck me as really funny to imagine a phalanx of soldiers walking through the wilderness, all wondering what the hell they were supposed to be looking for.
Ha ha yeah, then imagine if the dragonborn ran by, with a dragon, two giants and a mudcrab chasing his ass, mass battle ensures then all that remains is three soldiers constantly standing in the same position telling the other to stop whineing cause their cold.

cause im pretty sure i came across that last bit while exploring!

Went Stormcloak on my first playthrough, was all about being Nord as hell. But then I got to know Ulfric Stormcloak and what the guy is all about.

Never going anything but Legion from here on out. Fuck Ulfric.

Since most of the escapist chose the imperials, I knew I made the right choice in joining the stormcloaks.

A couple of my friends who had owned the game for a while before I got it both said they'd sided with the Empire, and for the same reason: the Stormcloaks are a bunch of manchildren only concerned with the short term. I'd still had my issues, though, since the Empire were conquerors (sort of) and they'd also banned Talos worship at the behest of the Thalmor. So I wound up leaving Helgen with the Imperial's help and he took me to his uncle in Riverwood - who told me that the Talos crackdown had started because of Ulfric. That was the tipping point.

And at least the Imperial general had the decency to apologise for almost cutting my head off for no reason.

I went with the Stormcloaks first time round, i'm all for the severing of from the imperials but the hating of other races i'm against. i really wanted to have the option of after storming solitude and killing the general to turn around to ulfric and do what magneto did to Sebastian Shaw in first class by killing Ulfric and ruling myself.

after all I have plot armour and pretty much took the city single handedly (one hit kills for everyone!).

My Nord sides with the Stormcloaks, because it's the patriotic thing to do...
My dunmer also sides with the Stormcloaks, because if Skyrim can successfully break free of Imperial control, than the other nations have a decent shot as well...

2. They may be nationalist fascists, but at least they don't want to take over the world and enforce their own laws on everyone else (sieg heil, Imperials).
3. Skyrim rightfully belongs to them.
I don't agree with your second point, and it's for this reason: something tells me that Ulfric, being the power-mad egomaniac he is, wouldn't really stop his conquest at Skyrim's borders if he forced the Empire out. He'd probably justify his invasion of other provinces by saying he is along the same vein as Tiber Septim.

I chose the stormcloaks, the torture chamber in helgen, and the torture chamber at the thalmor outpost (while doing the mision for that greymane lady, forget the name) pushed me over the edge.yea, Ulfric may be a little racist, but it's nothing like the imperials allowing the thalmor to capture and torture their citizens, desperate treaty or not. Fuck the empire, they should have fought to their last breath rather than accept those terms.

At least Ulfric is willing to do that.

PS I haven't finished the main and civil war quests yet, so my decision was based on what I would know at the time. And just at face value, the empire is disgusting.

Oh, one more thing, a lot of people say that all dark elves are forced to live in the grey quarter, but there are 2 dunmer shopkeepers that live in the same area as all the nords, so I guess that's a lie.

Looking over this thread, I think it really speaks to the quality of Bethesda's designs that we can have so many different perspectives on issue of the civil war and there are a myriad of reasons for supporting either side.

Stormcloaks

Despite Ulfric being Nirn's equivalent of Hitler, many of the Stormcloaks do seem to care dearly about the fate of Skyrim, and are more than willing to die to retain their freedom.
Yes, because having mildly racist troops during a nationalistic war is exactly the same as wanting to wipe out an entire race and killing six million innocents.

The Stormcloaks are not Nazis in any way shape or form, they are treating elves better then America and Australia treated German and Japanese citizens during WW2. Not to mention that the Nazis were aggressors, invading other countries while the Stormcloaks have only fought in Skyrim, and are fighting against a group that considers them a lesser species and wants to wipe them out.

Well everyone seemed like a douchebag but one of the Imperial guys was voiced by someone who was in Battlestar Galactica so I went for them. Only for that.
This was my reasoning aswell. How could I go against him!
