Studies say we need 7-8 hours sleep and that we start to lose cognitive ability when sleep deprived (Described in this link below)

http://www.sleepfoundation.org/article/how-sleep-works/how-much-sleep-do-we-really-need

Further, sleep time is when our body gets the chance to regenerate both brain cells and the cells of your organs etc...

You lack the ability to metabolise sugar (the junk you eat gets converted into fat!)

There are loads of side effects to consistent sleep debt below but to list them simply

http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/exchange/node/1690

Find it difficult to focus?
Short temper?
Low immune system? - (decreased white blood cell count)
Find it hard to remember simple things?
Bags under your eyes that don't go away with a sleep in on the weekend?
Cuts and bruises take longer to heal?
Increased appetite/Weight gain? (since experiencing prolonged sleep debt)
Feeling down for no reason?
increased cravings or reliance on 'pick me ups'?

I'm wondering escapists if you have felt any of these also?
Do you think this is bogus or does it resonate with you?

I get enough sleep only on the weekends for the most part. The rest depends on what days I have class so I am bout 50/50 on getting full amounts of sleep.

I generally sleep a good 8 or 9 hours these days. In school though I was going with like 4 a day then catch up on weekends for quite a while.

I suffer from Insomnia and my meds for pain tend to keep me awake...so, yeah...I've got little to no choice in how long I can sleep (2-4 hours at a time - if that)

Yeah, I'm in high school accelerated courses (IB to be specific). I get like 6 a night if I'm lucky. I try to catch up on the weekends, but I never seem to...

I sleep 5-6 hours every weeknight and feel fantastic every morning.

I really sleep in on the weekends though. 10+ hours.

I tend to get 7-8 hours a night (or at least try to). I do feel mood changes the less I sleep. And it's impossible to remember the point I was making. Because its half 3 AM.

Good to see some people are getting 8+ hours. I find above 18, 6 is enough, 4 is tolerable for a few days in a row, less than that and I feel my eyes are lost on the floor.

Coffee also equals an extra hour of sleep [1 coffee, that is, so 5 coffees + 6 hours sleep = an extra alert person :)].

I can function perfectly well on 3-4 hours, but if i'm not doing something the next day (which is most days) then its likely i'll be asleep for a good 12-15 hours xD

This sounds rediculous to me, I shall be honest. Why? There's the whole method of sleep where you just sleep for three hours and nap throughout the day... you don't have to do everything all at once!

My one friend insists on 12 hours a day, though.

It's one of the great mysteries of science as to what the fuck actually happens when you sleep

When did they discover exactly what it does?

I'm on Everyman now, 4 hours.

When I don't have panic attacks due to lack of sleep, I feel much better when I get minimal hours of sleep.

Just last week on I got 3 and a half hours and was fine.

Next day, I woke up after 9 hours and could barely stay awake.

If anything I oversleep. If I have no specific reason to get up I can usually end up sleeping for 10 hours +. For college & other obligations I tend to get about 6 - 7 though so maybe it balances out.

I try to get 8-9. I've actually reverted to a classical sleep pattern, like they had before electricity. I sleep four hours, wake up have a piss, do some light reading or just some thinking for fifteen to twenty minutes before sleeping another four hours. It surprisingly refreshing. I've cut down to one cup a coffee a day and go to sleep quickly.
