In England I'm normally L or occasionally M. I don't know what that translates to but I'm about 5'10" and 13st (but with a 32" waist - god, I love rugby).

Edit: Sorry, I meant to press "Preview". Anyway, no, I don't see a problem in the U.K. so much, though the media would have us believe otherwise. I do believe however, that marketing companies do make too many items for ghosts and (I'll be polite here) larger people. Too often there are clothes on the rack (and this is after one of the staff has refilled the rail) that are only XXXL or S. Its almost as though its P.C. to put out clothes for people who are at either end of the spectrum and not for the people in the middle.

Edit 2: Shit. I really should have read all of the posts before I typed something.

Ok i'm a guy first off and i'm 5'10ish i don't care about what anybody else says i'm 5'10ish. Anyways now that everyone knows i have a problem with being below average height i also weigh between 140-150. M to L and honestly i can wear from the kids department better than the mens, its sad. I think its weight distribution those pants were designed to fit the women of the same size except with all their weight in cleavage or ass or maybe you have to much ass which IS NOT A BAD THING AND DON'T LET ANYONE TELL YOU OTHERWISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...Are you serious? I'm usually a Small, and the shirts I tried on at Old Navy were ridiculous. I picked up an Extra Small and I was swimming in it.

Okay, maybe this is a bit to personal for you to answer, or maybe your comfortable with it, but what size are you?

Maybe this is me just being self consious, but recently I made a shopping trip to Old Navy to make use of an ancient gift card. Now, I'm 140 pounds, 5'6 - a complete average weight and height for a person of my age and gender if the US Medical Association is to be believed (You know that growth line chart at the doctors, I am RIGHT on it). I don't think myself to be very pudgy but I could barely fit into a size Large!

And when I checked, the so called 'smalls' were barely enough fabric to cover my niece who is 7 years old! Who were they designing these clothes for? Anorexics? The weirdest part was that when I looked again the sizing scale went up to a full 2XXL. Where is the logic in this? Is our country so misbalanced that either your a shapeless stick child; or beach land whale who likes to wear camisoles? (I am so sorry if that offended anyone, really.)

SO what are your thoughts? Do you think obesity in younger ages is a real problem? Do you think clothing stores carry some sort of stigma to people who carry a bit more weight? Or do you just think that these 'standard' sizes are maybe a reflection of a media "what-you-SHOULD-look-like?" standard?

(This thread is not meant to offend anyone. Really. Really really.)
You should also take into account where the clothes were made. Because if you think about it, (I'm not saying its certain) but a majority of clothing is produced in developing countries where labour is cheap. It may be possible that the clothes, ALTHOUGH the company gives measurements, were made by what the worker thought would fit his or her children....I'm not too sure about that but its entirely possible...

I have come to the conclusion that clothes sizes are stamped randomly on any item of clothing they see, regardless of size or gender.

Why would the clothing industry do this? They feed on tears.

I wear XL shirts, the waist-line on my pants is about 36. I want to lose weight and have lost some weight, but due to medication I have to take daily, weight doesn't come off of me easily.

I do, however, eat mostly healthy meals. Before I started taking medication I weighed around 155 lbs at 5'11", and could wear medium sized shirts. My goal is to get back down to around 165 ish or a bit lower, but I drink a lot of diet soda and am told that keeps weight on you, too.

But that majority of company headquarters where the clothing and their sizes are design are corporations with American roots. Although even then, it doesn't seem like their making their clothes to fit real people, instead mannequins and models, because let's face it, those troublesome things like body weight and actually having a figure could deter from the clothes their (not) wearing.

Interesting idea though.

The sizings in Australia are absolutely retarded. In one store, I'm a size 8 in jeans, in another, I'm a bloody 14. Same goes for shirts. So many places don't seem to make shirts for busty girls. >.<

Anyway. A lot of sizes seem to be a bit silly. This seems to sum it up well:

And here I was expecting an in-depth discussion of boobage. Damn.

I'm a 'small,' but not by North American standards, apparently. I'm what I call a European small. Almost every 'small' here, in my own damn country, would comfortable seat a family of five (from my perspective), but the second I go to central Europe for a week, all of a sudden a 'small' is actually a 'small'! Imagine that!

Keep in mind, I'm 5'10, 135lbs, and have a total fat percentage of 9. It's not that I don't eat, it's just that the enormous amounts of food I do eat seem to evaporate in my metabolism before they can stick anywhere.

It's a hard-knock life, for me.

XXL, mostly for length.

My family is known for our lengthy midsection, give it a few more inches and it would be as long as my leg.

I'm usually in a large, and I've actually lost about 20-30 pounds over the last year (on purpose) but why do you care?

~6 ft tall 195 lbs, not sure if it matters but also male

A bit over weight, but not too awful I think...but ya, shirts are a large, waist is a 34, though some brands it's bigger because I guess they fail at using rulers in their factory.
