When playing a FPS, not necessarily online altough this is the basis for my idea, do you prefer to use a sniper rifle to pick off enemies a long way off, helpless unless they have a sniper and have better aim, or do you prefer to be right in the action with an automatic gun or shotgun where you get to see every bullet pepper the enemy?

Personally I prefer a mix. When I feel like being ruthless I take a sniper, When a sniper picks me off I take a sniper to get them back, However most of the time I just go kamakazi and run in spraying bullets.

On the online game, Crossfire, I believe my average life expectancy is about 5 seconds of bullet spraying, usually with a couple of kills on my part.

How about you guys?

I prefer to get up close and personal with a sniper rifle

nothing sends a demoralizing message to your foes then a point-blank sniper round to the face

Whenever I discover a new area, I go off of the beaten path in order to find two things:

1. Scenic views
2. Secluded/Hidden Areas

I'm good at hiding, and I can wait for well over half a day doing nothing but sitting. I am a sniper by nature.

The same applies to video games.

Well the only 3 weapon sets I go for in CoD4 are; A Shotgun with Juggernaut; A Silenced Automatic Machine Gun with UAV Jammer; and A Sniper with UAV Jammer. So I think that kind of answers the question...

Snipe them from mid range with a scoped assault rifle. That was my CoD4 tactic, then when they come for you, whip out an SMG.

You have a point there. Kinda manic point, but a point nonetheless.

I like having the Option; options are key. I don't want a game dictating that this is HOW I have to beat someone; I like to be creative.

I voted indifference. But on reflection, I think I prefer the melee or close range options.

If it's melee I enjoy being a sneaky bastard, if it's close range gun-play I enjoy out-maneuvering and flanking if possible.

I play these things for the relaxing catharsis. So it's a lot of lead up close for me.

Full auto in your face, with the sole exception of TF2, which did the impossible and actually made the sniping fun for me, possibly because of the sniper's melee weapon =P

Up close because a) I can't snipe and b) ever since nearly every shotgun kill in CoD:WaW dismembers the opponent, it's become twice the fun.

I said up close, but its more midrange. Most games, I can't snipe for my life but I still try and keep my distance with either an assault rifle or a semi-auto rifle. Unless of course its L4D. Nothing beats the shotty.

Last as long as possible just hitting people or stabbing them depending on the game. I once almost survived a couple minutes doing this in COD4.

Fear smells the same at 700 yards or 7, but the former saves on dry-cleaning bills, and I am a cheap bastard. Sniping it is.

No option for mid-range.

So, for me it would be Battle Rifle from as far away as I can get a scoped hit (I'm useless with the Sniper Rifle), then get more hits as I get closer, then Melee - but I've usually attempted to stick a Plasma Grenade on the target by then.
