I always go with the shotgun.

In my opinion, anyone can pick up a sniper rifle and put an instantly lethal bullet in an unaware target without fear of retribution...that's easy.

It is considerably more difficult to have to run from one side of an open map to the other while dodging sniper fire, rockets, grenades and other shotgun/smg weilding players along the way to deal with some camping sniper tucked away in some dark corner, only to be blown up by a concealed landmine or no-scoped (meaning you have to go through all of that again).

It is provably more difficult (especially in recent times) to go for CQB than to snipe but in my experience...that extra challange makes me somewhat better.

I like rocket launchers. I enjoy having to properly lead my target, and blowing junk up is just fun. imho there's nothing more awesome than managing to "snipe" someone (or possibly multiple people) from across the map with a well-placed rocket, and then watching their tiny body(s) helplessly ragdoll away. Warms the cockles it does.

For me it is all situational. If I can get a clean shot woth the sniper rifle from across the map I'll take it. Although I am not a patient player so I can't sit there in one spot for 20 minutes lookin down the scope. I prefer to run around and be free (until the person who does have said patience removes my skull).

Up close. It's a lot more satisfying to blow someone away when you can see the whites of their eyes.

It depends on the game and map.

In CoD4 I'm all about up close and personal because I always feel like I'm not contributing if I'm sniping. I rarely get a great score sniping and since everyone else is running around like crazy you tend to become a target. If I need any distance usually I'll go assault rifle w/ ACOG and an mp5.

In CS:S snipers can be extremely helpful and if you play in a league you are guaranteed to find snipers at any range. Personally I like the scout or scoped assault rifle for mobility but I can pull out the awp and blast faces off.

And I rarely play sniper in Team Fortress... The sniper always feels useless and cheap.

Sniper rifle in close-combat.

Nothing. NOTHING! beats sniping people from 5 meters. Especially when they try to run past me and I slowly shoot another hole in their head.

Nothing pleases me more than leaving someone wondering where the hell that bullet came from. It brings me joy to remove peoples faces from 500 yards.

nothing sends a demoralizing message to your foes then a point-blank sniper round to the face
I love doing it. However cod4 unscoped is ridiculous, the bullets gome out 10 degrees off from the correct trajectory!

I usually snipe. Nothing better than picking off the running target from across the map.

If the map is ill suited for sniping, I tend to take an accurate assault rifle (like the M4 or G3 in CoD4) so I can mid-long range snipe or rush as the situation demands.

If the map really isn't good for sniping (i.e Shipment in CoD4), I tend to use an SMG or similar spraying gun.

I tend to prefer finesse over practicality.

I'm actually getting COD4 for the PC after playing it on a friend's PS3. Might finally get off 2142, hehe.
I'm an all-rounder when it comes to roles. I can do anything moderately well, and I get lucky often. I'm not pro at anything though.
He suggested the M4 for that kinda player, how about you lot?

I very much prefer to mix it up, that was why G3 was ideal when I played CoD 4 (back in the day...it's been ages since I fired that thing up, and after playing valve games for so long it was weird to play it)

In games i tend to snipe a lot.
In real life... well lets just say that nothing feels better than someones warm blood and flesh all over your face.

This is wierd actually- First thinking about it I'd far rather plant mines, set traps and generally have the enemy as weak as possible before actually firing. In practise I'm usually firing a shotgun whilst running towards my opponent, daring him to be the last one standing.

I like both, but what I really like doing in Left 4 Dead is getting the Hunting Rifle and (ab)using it as a long-ranged shotgun with a scope.

Trust me, it can kill zombies up close and it can kill zombies far away.
