Lately one of my favorite pass-times while at home has been watching episodes of Monty Python's Flying Circus on youtube (one particularly enthusiastic user has uploaded every episode from all 4 seasons) and I gotta say I find it to be funnier than most SNL stuff these days. So I got bored while at work and decided to post this poll:

Which do you like more, Monty Python or SNL? British Comedy vs American Comedy.

Now, to be fair, I've split the SNL vote, "Classic" = back in the days of Chris Rock, Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, Bill Murray, etc. Modern is, as the name implies, the more modern episodes.

Personally I gotta say that I like Monty Python's style, I like how almost every sketch smoothly transitions into the next as though the entire show were one continuous story.

That and I gotta say I'm a fan of British Comedy. I just love their accents! :3

God, tough decision. I go with SNL classic because Bill Murray is a legend. And I've met him.

Gotta say, Bill's right up there on my wish list of "If I could meet any celebrity..."

I have met Ron White the comedian, though. That was pretty sweet. :p

Not even a contest.
Monty Python is hilarious and truly classic and will always remain so. Their humor works on a more basic and universally relatable level.
Practically every snl sketch I've watched has been slightly boring in some capacity.

I personally find WKUK far funnier than SNL.

Move to Charleston. I feel like everyone who lives here meets him at some point.

Glad you split SNL into classic and present day, although it was a little unnecessary, as no one in their right mind is going to vote for present day.

Made it a reasonably tough question. It's still Python though. Murray, Murphy, et al did their best work outside of SNL.

And see that's what I was thinking. Like I said, I wanted to keep it fair. I felt that if I didn't split it I'd have people saying "Well I liked the old school cast of SNL, but the newer generations are crap." :p And who knows? There might be a few out there that do like the modern SNL...but like you, I highly doubt it.

Wow, so far it's not even close. I'm kinda surprised, but at the same time I'm not really surprised. I would have assumed there'd be some classic SNL fans out there, but it seems everyone loves them so Monty Python. Granted the poll is still young, but if this trend keeps up we could have a blow-out.

It's not a hugely fair contest, really. There's a vast amount more SNL, over the years, but by the very nature of a Live show it's less consistent than the scripted sketch/film fun of the Pythons.

They're also tremendously different styles of comedy, and Monty Python is not particularly representative of British comedy (being made by Oxbridge graduates in the 60s and 70s), in the same way as Saturday Night Live is not entirely representative of US comedy, due to the cult of celebrity and the restrictions of it being a live show.

Just trying to give both sides a fair whack. I'll say this, though: as an English person, who's only seen a few SNLs, I wasn't particularly impressed. Whereas I've seen almost all of the Pythons' output, and I find it more... consistent, incisive, relatable. It's not hugely surprising. :p

Monty Python....

Is this really in question?

They also have 2 of the most quotable films out, Life of Brian and Holy Grail.

Only watched a few episodes of SNL in passing and skits on Youtube, and I quickly turned them off since the humour didn't click with me. I'm gonna chalk that up to cultural differences. British comedy is something I prefer more, and Monty Python, even if it isn't representative of everything, just has so much going for it.

Monty Python, on acting ability and innovation alone.

John Cleese's delivery of his final line is just fantastic.

I may be wrong but I think there have been a couple of SNL films. They were just really bad.

To be quite honest, I'm the only person that I know IRL that likes Monty Python better than SNL. Pretty much everyone I know actively dislikes Monty Python, in fact. While they may not like the past few generations of SNL, they love the older ones.

And that's why I'm actually pretty surprised at the outcome thus far. I know there are a lot of people here from many different countries, but I would have thought that SNL Classic would have a respectable amount of votes since most people I know would consider that to be the Golden Age of SNL. I normally have a good idea of how polls I post are going to turn out, and this landslide victory for Monty Python was something I didn't completely expect.

Python by default, since I've never watched SNL, and because it's my duty to my homeland to always prefer British comedy. We're just better at it.
