Gotham City and you play as Batman catching bad guys, fighting lunatics and escape the police in your Batmobile.

OR!

Gotham City and you play as the villain spreading chaos and escaping the grasp of the Batman in your villainmobile.

What would really be awesome is if both of those were in the same game.
And risk game imploding from being to awesome?
We'll hsve to take that chance. Oh! What if your friends could play (up to four player) co-op with you...or some of them could play on the other side? Like free mode in GTA IV only a lot more awesome.
No co-op cause that would have to bring Robin and possibly Batwoman with it. And those 2 characters suck.

But co-op super villains would be cool!

But Batman works alone! Theres not enough space in the Batmobile!
Maybe he can get a BatmoSUV.
But that would make him uncool.
Don't you ever fire your whore mouth off at Batman again!
But a BatmoSUV would suck.
He does also have a Batank however...
But its true! A BatmoSUV would make Batman uncool! And thats almost impossible to do!

Anyways, I vote for....Ancient Rome. I just love them Romans. I want an awesome 3D life simulator in Rome. Visit the arena, buy some slaves, eat grapes while lying on a sofa, that sort of thing.

Well an island would be easier to seamlessly put in barriers that restrict you but don't feel for lack of a better word Oblivionish.
Oblivion isn't set on an island.

Star-Wars (KOTOR) universe... its almost here and its going to stomp on WoW!
*sigh* Far too many MMO's have tried...WoW is just too big and addictive and it will eat everything else. Woe.
Oh no, it wouldn't "try". It realises that it is in a galaxy far, far away (haha) and doesn't care about WoW, but during its walking around it realises that it has stepped on WoW.

Also, I am hoping to distract enough WoW fan-people with this to allow WoW to escape from its butt-rape... Quick, RUN! ESCAPE!

I'd much prefer a single player game.
Well, the MMO is set 300 years ahead of KOTOR 2 so there is plenty of room for many more KOTOR games. So, all is well.

All of the OP's ideas are derivative and have become boring, and to be honest, I don't think much of Assassin's Creed (which I always think of as Ass Creed). I reckon that you could make a very good steampunk-style open-world game as long as you didn't go too overboard with the steampunk genre, as long as you didn't just make it a modern story which happened to have the style of the Victorian era.

And what about the modern era? Almost everybody ignores the sheer number of effective scenarios that could be done interestingly with an analogue of the real world. As for derivative settings of my own, the Wild West and post-apocalyptic settings could make very effective open-world games if you did them right.
Very good point, I can't believe I forgot to put Steampunk in there. As for apocalypse and Western scenarios, that's what we have Red Dead Redemption and Fallout for! Oh, and I can't remember the last open-world game in the developing, war-torn part of the Middle East.

I'd have to say either feudal Japan or the tropical island, because the others are all samy with little variety in the maps.

Screw those! Go Viking Scandinavia!
It could actually be a quite good setting.
