Water is the most powerful in my opinion because healing would really come in handy. Also blood bending if you are a jerk. I think air benders get sound bending or something. I don't know there aren't a lot of air bender around to experiment with this.

Hold on, guys. You clearly forgot about the best character.
As for bending I'd probably go with water for the same reasons others have mentioned. Versatility, flexibility, healing, plantbending, bloodbending, and you can do cool stuff with ice and water whips.

My favorite character is this awesome little lady here.

I'll admit that Book 1 got me interested in Avatar, but it's the appearance of Toph in Book 2 that has had me hooked on the series ever since.

Also, despite having a lot of love for Toph, I would prefer to learn Airbending because, you know, it makes you run faster(?).

I'd be a Firebender.
Why?

My favourite characters would have to be Iroh, RIP Mako :(, Azula and Toph.
EDIT: Either that, or Waterbending, but only so that I can bloodbend.
It'd be a bonus if I could be as powerful as
Yakone or Tarrlok or Amon

Lin made earthbending the shit. In light of that I would love to be an earthbender, but raised and trained in the northern water tribe, Be fluid like water as they say, plus moving like a waterbender I think would greatly help metal bending.

Iroh, gotta be Iroh because, I mean, come on! He's Iroh!
Instead of a very close second, though, I get a very close tier of seconds. The Mechanist, Koh the Face Stealer, Bumi, Roku, Toph, Hama, Suki, Jeong Jeong and Sokka are all up there vying for position.

As for bending types... Can I choose Avatardom? They would all be brilliant and useful in their own ways, but I ended up choosing Earthbending, mainly because of Ba Sing Se and the Dai Li. It seems to be the most versatile of the Bending Disciplines.

I still love Iroh hes one of the best old men for a show and I wonder what would of happened had him and Ozai fought and how much devastation it would of brought from there flames. Tho Iroh would totally win the fight

So if you could become a bender what kind would you like to be and it can be any type?

Also who is everyone's fav char and why?

I would also love a prequel staring Iroh and possibly other older chars and let us see some of there adventures like when he went to the spirit world or learned true firebending from the sun people.
Picking a favorite character is hard, Avatar had such good characters. Iroh was an excellent mentor, wise man, and yet very good natured and humorous. Toph was hilarious and had a very explosive personality. I thought Zuko had the best character development over the series, he went from being very uni-dimensional and single minded to much more empathetic and and multidimensional.

As for bending: Airbending. Fying is awesome.

Hmmm water is tempting since it's pretty overpowered (ask me why, I dare you :p) But earth or fire suit my personality more. On the other hand, airbending lets you effin fly! So any bending would be great really, I'm not picky :)

Off topic: you know how earthbenders get metalbending and firebenders get lightning? I wonder what airbenders would get...
I'd say it's really underpowered or at least inconvenient, having to be near sources of water and/or carry it around with you. Blood bending is pretty crazy but it's only able to be done on a full moon, and within the lore, few people know how/want to do it.

I'd go with fire, because it's super handy and convenient (unless you go by the completely inane movie rules where you have to be near a source of fire).

Earthbending all the way.

My favorite character is Sokka. I rarely like a comic relieve character, but that's because Sokka was more than that. I also love that even after becoming a Councilman in Republic City, he is still the Sokka that we know. :3
Thanks, bro. I love getting shit spoiled.

Bumi, hands down my favorite character in the show, followed by Iroh and Toph.

Earthbending would be my choice, seems to have the most practical uses.

I'm just gonna let my avatar speak for me there.
Also, Toph provides my favorite character from Legend of Korra, Lin.

As for which bending to go with, I honestly can't consider anything but water to be even remotely useful in everyday life.

I would chose Airbending because it just seems so useful. You could fly to where you needed to go, incapacitate attackers by bending the air out of their bodies, basically gain the power to use Force Push, and have an element that is always around you.

Also my favorite character is Toph for so many reasons.

Favorite character is easily Toph.

As for bending, it's a toss up between earth and water for me.

I like waterbending and firebending since both kind of represent my personality best. Though I would go for waterbendiny because of the healing factor.

My most favorite character is the Cabbage Man.

Ha! I'm just kidding. I like Iroh because he's just a cool old wise guy.

Actually I just finished it yesterday and was really impressed. It's a hard decision for my favorite character I'm tempted to say Katara, but that's mainly because I have a huge crush on her, so I'm gonna go with Toph because she's just awesome. As for bending definitely earth since it would fit my personality best and seems really useful.

Waterbenders can also get bloodbending, though I suppose you could also say they ice bend if you don't want to go the evil route. I don't think Airbenders get anything else though, which kinda sucks for them.
The way I see it, they probably DID have one or two special forms of airbending. But everyone who could use it/teach it was wiped out during ozai's airbender extermination. So it's left to our own imagination what their special bending could have been. So far I got: soundbending, tornadobending and poison gas bending lol.

Despite the whole carrying water thing, I still say it's overpowered. Why? Wel first of all they get a powerboost every night. Firebenders are the only other guys who get a similar boost. Secondly they can learn tons of specialized bending styles: blood, healing, ice and plants. And those are just the canon ones, you can easily come up with more. Example: steambending. Ever seen what boiling hot steam can do to a person? You'd be better off taking a direct hit from azula...
And to top it all off, they seem to have no problem taking on other benders head to head. Even when using only regular water bending, in the middle of the day and using only the water they were carrying. I'll admit that last part makes no sense but that just seems to be how it is in the show: they just open up their water bottle and start kicking ass as if that's all the water they need.
