Wow I what a killer, I mean I am a PC fan boy or close to it and the PS4 had me wanting it and wanting the "New Xbox" to give it a war, but it just shot it's self in the face if this is a war and in fact does mean the "New Xbox" requires an always online to work at all it is not even on par with a virtual boy.

Yeah this is definitely a scary thing. I hope this new console can hold a signal, because I'm a wireless only kind of guy. Even though I have a lack of interest in this new console generation, I do feel for the people who buy this console and have internet drops, or who can't buy this console due to spotty internet connection or no connection at all. I personally play single player games when I don't want to be connected to the internet or have a slow connection, and if my game shuts off because of an internet drop, I'm gonna have a hissy fit.

Remember, although there may be strong evidence pointing towards always online bullshit, there is absolutely nothing confirmed at the moment. Until somebody from Microsoft comes out and says, in no uncertain terms, that this console will require an internet connection to play games, we will not know for sure. Hell, there's a very good chance that Microsoft hasn't even decided for sure if they're going to have an online requirement or not. So let's lower our torches and pitchforks for a moment (although we should probably keep them close by).

Personally, I just refuse to believe that Microsoft would be that fucking stupid. Yes, I know Microsoft has made some very stupid decisions in the recent past, especially regarding video games, but I still just cannot believe that they would be this dumb. They would prevent a very large amount of consumers from playing their console, inconvenience many more, and outright piss off even more. They would surely lose a substantial amount of sales because of this. And to gain what exactly? Less piracy? No used games? I don't honestly think that these things are so important to Microsoft that they would risk losing a huge amount of their userbase. I really don't.

I may end up being proven wrong. But I hope for the sake of the gaming industry that I'm not.

Next up, in order to recoup their losses, they decide to increase the sub cost for xboxlive.
That would be the smart thing to do, right?

Long as they port the interesting games to pc I don't really give a damn.

To be fair I'm far more interested in AOE II's re-release on Steam, if only they would revive Emsemble and make AOE IV.

"You will use this on our terms because we know what's best for you" isn't a new attitude at Microsoft, look at Windows 8. It would've been much more readily accepted if all the new features were optional, but Microsoft jumped the gun and left it to third parties to fix.

I can definitely see them being this stupid

Terrible idea, if its true I will not be buying one. Despite their obvious flaws I am not that bothered all to much about a game having always online DRM, its annoying but if I want the game enough I will put up with it. Even when it goes wrong I an still left able to use my machine and play another game. If an always online machine cannot access its services I would not be able to use it at all.

If the idea is true (and I stress that people not assume it is, it is just a bunch of rumors at this point), it would be terrible for the system. People would flock to the PS4 and possibly the WiiU in droves instead. I know I would stick with my gaming PC, a PS4, and a WiiU, at least.

It is a relatively new attitude for them though. Microsoft used to sell you the product and then what you did with it afterwards, short of selling it yourself, was your own business. Between this (rumored as it may be) and Windows 8 they've taken a step off the deep end, but even Windows 7 and the 360 were pretty much yours to do with what you will.

It's baffling that they could do this and not expect both a huge outlash and a drop in sales... but we'll see. Maybe they're trying to compete with EA for the golden poo next year.

A little backstory about myself. I love digital distribution and I prefer that over having a physical copy. I can actually pay more to get a game on Steam than it would cost to buy a physical copy because I find it more convenient.

As for always online console? I hate it. I am a huge fan of digital distribution and every new thing I hear about the Xbox makes me hate it more. Always online is the worst though. I like many others live in student housing where consoles are blocked from accessing the internet. I can use it for online gaming on my PC, but a console can't connect at all. This is why I am against this thing and will probably stick with Wii U aand gaming PC and get a PS4 if the games for it look good.

Now for anyone not living like I do we can always look at the tragic launch of SimCity to determine that this is a bad idea. This happens with every launch of every game with an always on component. Now this choice could affect pretty much anyone. Microsoft's servers jumping? Everyone connected to those servers will have their game interrupted.

Personally, I think it is a good idea. Now I'm finally getting the kick up the rear I need to convert to the glorious PC gaming master race. Might also re-align myself with Sony too.

Well the reason consoles are so popular (in my experience at least) is their technical simplicity. Disk goes in, game goes on. And no reading the back of the box wondering "will it run on my machine?"
That's why I embraced consoles so completely during my college years but now I'm wondering why bother. I have to so much time stuffing around with corrupted hard drives and connectivity issues on my 360 (not to mention RRoD) that in the last 3 years I've gone from 10% PC gaming 90% console to now it being the opposite.

It's not that PC gaming won me over, it's that console gaming pushed me away.

So if a console is required to always be online, I just won't be having a console then, even though I've always played consoles since my Master System II over 22 years ago.

I love online content and digital distribution as much as the next man, but 'always online' is a terrible idea. At present, my internet connection isn't the best and has a tendency to drop out or needing to be refreshed. This is fine with my current Xbox 360 because I can still keep playing and not loose anything.

But if this new console is going to kick me off or refuse to let me play if my connection drops, then I'm not buying it.

What's with the extreme anti-piracy measure these days? Just because you can integrate always-online DRM doesn't mean you should. Xbox exclusives are declining each year, with this type of console, there's no more reason to get a new Xbox.

WiiU and PS4 for me then.

I doubt it will go Always-on after all the constant rage.

If it does.. then.. well, no words. I won't buy it. Please no one buy it.

Also it's not always about the end-user's internet connection, the biggest issue is the servers you play on. They are typically unreliable and easy to abuse. Not to mention.. Company goes under? Your game is unplayable - 'Fuck off & thanks for your money!'

Because it's not about anti-piracy and it never was. Ever. Not just always-on, but mostly everything, even Activation Keys. It has -always- been about exploiting the consumer and binding them to draconian contracts, legislation and 'anti-privacy' data mining ventures.

Exploitation.

I can potentially see the Xbox needing an internet connection because Microsoft decides to finally do away with games on disks, but I can't see them requiring an always-on DRM system. Then again, these guys did produce Windows 8...

If they do this their console will sell just as many, if not more than the 360. People ARE that stupid and Microsoft know how to advertise feces as delicious icecream. Even those that refuse to get it will probably end up buying one because their friends were stupid enough to buy it. Sales people will tell parents how awesome the system is during Christmas and various other things will happen. Of course it might not happen but if it does... I don't predict a failure like it should be.

Where's the "I never intended to buy one and aren't surprised in the slightest, only mildly sympathetic for those who did intend to buy one" option?

I really don't think they'll have too much trouble selling them even with an always-on requirement. The vast majority of the playerbase probably have reliable internet and probably drink the Kool Aid.

This is...clearly a joke... so they can announce no mandatory DRM after all that free publicity
