It's not going to be like, constantly downloading shit in the background, is it?
No one knows.

Assuming for the moment that MS are going with always online, they could set it up as a simple timed ping-return... meaning the console would send a ping to the server and wait for the server to ping send it pack... if that all occurs within the set time, no worries, everything is grand. It's an low bandwidth action for users so unless MS totally cheaps out on servers or sets an unreasonably short ping-return time, it should even work for people on dial up.

The drawback to such a simple system is that it doesn't let the console manufacturer/network owner scan your hardware, collect metrics, constantly update the ad rotation on your menu screens and generally flood the user's bandwidth with a bunch of shit the user would really REALLY rather do without and are things the console manufacturers genrally want to be doing.

Well I'm sick of the PS3 getting the crappy ports for games made on the 360 so I could care less about the nextbox. If it fails then maybe the PS4 will get more games designed using it's specs instead of the nextbox. I'm about ready to switch entirely from Windows 7 to ubuntu so I can be rid of Microsoft's stupidity once and for all.

Watching the supposed reaction if Microsoft announced nextbox to require always online (especially in the wake of the Sim-city disaster) would be hilarious.

It would be like watching a train wreck, except where one of the engineers sends insulting, dismissive tweets claiming that, "no really, everyone loves train wrecks #dealwithit." while the train is crashing.

Personally, I think it is a good idea. Now I'm finally getting the kick up the rear I need to convert to the glorious PC gaming master race. Might also re-align myself with Sony too.
Pretty much this. I know approximately jack about PCs, but I think it may finally be time to learn. (This is how I #dealwithit, Adam Orth.)

There's at least one other reason it might be a good idea, though: if the DRMbox comes out, the customers revolt, and it fails so hard that it nearly breaks Microsoft, then always-on DRM will go down in history as one of the Worst Things Ever, and no one will try it again. (I can dream, can't I?)

Laughably horrific! Actually, it's just laughable.

This has basically convinced me to not buy it.

Other than a vocal minority and reviewbombing, I have not seen convincing evidence that the always online "revolution" has a large impact on the purchasing habits of the masses.

I for one prefer my drm steam flavored.

Exbawx can suk eet.

Come over to the PC Overlord side! We can buy games, if we don't want the DRM, we download a exe to remove it. Want to add more fun to your game? Community supported mods!

Everything is sunnier on the PC side.

Is that really only one sentence?

What is this?

Have you no respect for language?

Yeah, well, DRM and always-on and always-on DRM - no thanks. Thanks, but no thanks. I'll throw my money at someone else.

This is a bad thing for Microsoft...if they want to make an always online console then why not just release their few remaining exclusive titles and peripherals as PC add-ons/ software? The big advantage consoles have over PCs...well, the big thing that differentiates consoles from PCs is the ease of accessibility: People buy consoles because they don't want to punch in product codes, install their software or, hope their connection to the internet remains stable: they just want to pop a disc into a tray and play. Oh well: looks like we've returned to an era where Sony and Nintendo are going to be rivals in the gaming field while Microsoft focuses on PC titles and "Console" titles.

Did I mention we have cookies? Consoles don't have cookies. Come to the PC side! Stay for the cookies.

If that is the case then they can go fuck themselves and I will gladly never purchase one. None of their exclusives interest me any more, really.
