I haven't gotten a girl pregnant without a condom on, why should I ever wear one?
We already have fighter/bomber hybrids, that are much more functional. Besides, we already have a bunch of jets gathering dust, we don't need more.

Touche!

OT: Country invests lots in military hardware, finds out its crap. C'est la vie!

Regardless if you are a passionate believer in the swift and righteous justice of an F-22 delivered ordinance or a F-35, SU-47 or trained flying squirrels packed with explosives..there is only one thing to salvage from this, the military will always spend your money regardless if you wanted to or not. Sometimes the gamble pans out, sometimes it doesn't. This really shouldn't be a debate over who has the biggest and best military penis but over how to better manage military budgets.

What kind of nonsense is that?! China and America are economic butt-buddies, there's no freakin' way they're 'the new threat to Western ways of life,' those guys make the whole damned Western way of life possible.

And what has India done all of a sudden?! They're a freakin' ally of the USA!

So I say good that they cancelled this. The real new threats are splinter groups, groups bound by ideas and not nationality. Money should be spend on better ways to combat threats like that; guerilla warfare training, more funding for SpecOps soldiers, better ways to protect against IED's, better and more efficient intel gathering, those are the kind of things we need right now, not super-fighters.

The planes we have now are enough to combat anything in the world. No one has shit that would require something as advanced as the F-22, its a fucking money pit. Not to mention the cheaper F-35 is on the way
Is the Eurofighter Typhoon a match one-on-one for it?
Yes it is and with a capable pilot the Typhoon could actually down a F-22. F-22 is a seriously expensive piece of shit. The Typhoon, F-15, Dassualt Rafale and the Indian Sukhoi 30 MKI could all down it. $150 million and still pathetic and an excellent example of America military complex raping taxpayers

Edit: If you were talking about the F-35 then it would give the Typhoon some trouble at long range but at close range they are pretty equally matched. It all comes down to stealth, EF has RCS but F-35 is completely stealthy
Dude, a bloody MiG could shoot it down, only takes a single missile. That's the problem with people whom seem to think that we can somehow armour jets to make them inpenetrable, as this lady seems to think: you might stop bullets, but military-grade high explosives are going to mess with your shit.

The arms race these days with the navy and air force in particular is with stealth systems, as a missile can't lock on to what it can detect - and that's why the problems with the F22's stealth systems are the problems that they are, though the one this lady cites (it being detectable in rain) is a bit of a moot point.

Even if the plane IS terrible, it was a hell of a plane. This just means that the US has something bigger, better, and more deadly. And probably stealth.

Granted, the structuring of how it was manufactured is flawed (cash expenditures.) But the need for an air superiority fighter is still here. The USSR isn't around any more, but China and India are going to be the new threats to western ways of life.

I'm going to stop writing now, before I tick off everyone on the forum...
....

You might be confusing an economic war for an actual war here. Both China and India are strong trading partners of the US and neither party would find armed conflict with the other a sound decision. Not to mention that India is an ally of the United States; a luxury the US tends not to overlook these days.

Also, what "threat" could they be to "western ways of life". Are you perhaps afraid that chopsticks are going to replace knives and forks? English to be replaced by Hindi, Mandarin or Cantonese?

Bullshit.

The United States needs an air superiority fighter to replace the F-15. This women knows nothing about combat, the importance of air superiority and how disarmament DOES NOT WORK. It cost money to be the best, and I for one expect my government to protect me from ALL enemies foreign and domestic.

This women enrages me. I really think that she does not understand what an air superiority fighter is supposed to do. Which is one thing, kill enemy fighters. It doesn't need armour against small arms because it will be flying at 30,000 feet or better at mach 2. Her dissenting voice drives me to kill babies, god damn she is annoying.

GAHHHHHHHHHHHH, I want to kill her too.
Small arms fire? Hahaha, it would take a superhero to hit a SPEEDING FIGHTER JET with small arms fire.

I'm not even going to get into this, i don't have the patience.

you are all stupid, stop watching this bullshit and let the people who make it die in a fire.

The f22 was designed to be the hands down best AIR SUPERIORITY FIGHTER (in testing the f22 would go 2 vs 12 against USAF F15-G's and the f22 would come out victorious some 98% of the time) no matter the cost and based on the testing statistics it motherfucking is. Too bad the cost is over 100million per plane, and since the f15 is still around (and that plane has a track record of over 150 kills to 0 losses) we have no need to upgrade until china starts eying up Hawaii.

GOD DAMN IT!

How come we cancel every god damned new military project we do? The XM8 for example.
people have no initiate because we have no threatening enemy. if the Russians hadn't pussied out we'd be getting loads of new and cool stuff... but no, they dissolved and with them so did our drive to innovate to be better than them.

I think it's funny how she talks about how shitty quality it is and how it's basically useless in modern warfare and then goes on to say how it's such a bad idea to sell it to other countries because they might use it against us.

I honestly have no clue why they keep building pure fighters, the recent wars in the middle east have shown they need fighter bombers more, hell Australia's F-111 did a shit load of bombing and those planes are old.
The Iraqi air force refused to fly against the USAF during Operation Iraqi Freedom (much as I hate calling this conflict that), thats why nobody had problems. Additionally, the Iraqi air defense system was obliterated by a joint effort of cruise missiles supplied primarily by the US Navy.

Wow.

First of all: nothing flying right now nor in the near future would stand a chance against the F-22. That goes for the F-35, the Griffin (Jas 39 Gripen), the Rafale, the EF or any Sukhoi, Mig or chinese fighter you can name. Even with a lousy pilot, the F-22 would probably win.

The F-35 is financially just as much of a black hole as the F-22, mainly because of the VTOL-version (F-35B).

Being swedish, I find it somewhat embarrasing that three different jets with identical purpose was built simultaneously in the EU; the Eurofighter, the Rafale and the JAS Griffin.
Hopefully, the next-gen European fighter aircraft will be a joint project including ALL members of the union.

The fact that the XM-8 is being canceled has nothing to do with the plastic material, it has to do with the caliber of the weapon. Caseless ammunition and/or Airburst-munition is what's in development now and you can bet your ass that the US Army won't buy a new general purpose assault rifle sporting the same 5.56-round as the M-16.

Tell me about it - sure Dave, we need cuts, but I'm sure that you can just fire all those overpriced consultants the MoD hires and still make the same savings.
Damnit it all! I actually like Dave and all! but these cuts are coming in the wrong places!

It was to my mind the right choice to stop making these for the time being. One squadron should be enough. Fill out the rest of the fleet and consolidate our forces then maybe we can think about making more. Also it has to be remembered that this the F-22A, very few planes have been good right off the first model type. Just look at the Spitfire and Mustang for prime examples of this. If we stop trying to advance and become better we will wake up one day and find we have been passed. Complacency is the enemy future victory.
