None of the above. I've always like Mario's universe. everything is so happy and care free. except for the kidnappings but fuck her.

I voted Half-life, as I'd love to see an alternative perspective on the Combine/Xen situation.

Like they did with the original Half-Life expansions, with Adrian and Barney.

Half-Life universe? Really? IS there even ONE? I'd say HL1 and HL2 are set in completely different universes.

I'd vote for Fallout 3 as a universe, it seems interesting enough to support itself.

Definitely Star Wars: Republic Commando. The game itself is only so-so, but once you get into the novels (Hard Contact, Triple Zero, True Colors and Order 66) that expand upon the story and themes found in the game, you'll find it to be one of the best fictional sci-fi/military stories of this generation.

i would have voted resistance, except for one thing, resistance 2, i really liked the universe of on the first game, there was nothing to over the top (no fleets of flying battleships) and a decent amount of unanswered questions. but then number 2 ruined it for me. so i voted half life, mostly for the distopian city at the start of half life 2.

and while im thinking about this, the halo universe, what i undersatand of it (i've played it a couple of times with a friend) some parts are a bit generic, like the long dead tech advanced race wiped out by some great infection but conveinently leaving their technolgy in quite good working order *cough*stargate*cough*, some bits are less generic, like the halo worlds, they're just a bit crap. and killzone, world war 2 in space next coolest thing to being on ice.

Fallout 3 is an RPG. An Arr-Pee-Gee. Barred from the running in the initial post for the simple reason RPGs must have a better-rounded universe than your average FPS.

Star Wars is a pre-established setting, and thus also obviously well out.

For games, at the moment I would say Mass Effect. I'd love to have more of a chance to explore races other than human, especially.

I don't know enough about the extended universes of too many of the games to really compare them. Although from what I 've seen of the resistance universe I would say it seems pretty terrible.

The free comic that explains Adrian Shepard's backstory was pretty poor particularly because the way they explained his mutation. Why would an obscure fever and exposure to radiation cause military drug testing to turn him into the monster that has a telekinetic connection with the aliens/ancient creatures/Russian biological weapons?

The nature of the chimera remains completely unexplained this far into the series and despite all the allusions the cloven race has yet to appear. Also there is the inconsistencies in the chimera's breeding between the first and second game. I haven't read all material outside the games so it's possible that I might be wrong about alot of this stuff but from my experience the Resistance series is an ill-concieved framing for an invasion storyline.

I voted half-life here, simply because the others (As a setting) did not interest me. Gears, while it was a good idea, I found it pretty stupid. The fact that every character has a pretty much perfect moral code despite them all being "hardened criminals" just seems kinda unlikely to me.

Halo was actually a close second for me, although only because I've read too many books with the same sort of story arc in them.

Killzone is not my cup of tea - I have barely played it, however.

And I have never played Resistance.

Half-life has a good feel to it, while the episodes were pointlessly short (despite what Yahtzee says, I prefer something with a bit more substance as I bought the orange box for Ep2, not Portal, however fun it was for a few hours). Aside from the "loading" bits, it was fairly immersive - most of the minor characters had some element of personality to them that you still don't see in a lot of games. The G-man is still one of my favourite characters in a game.

Although I will agree that people are going to vote HL simply because Yahtzee thinks it's good.

Could someone give me a good overview of the Resistance universe for me? I'd prefer to hear it from someone who played it than a wiki article.

I don't like the Halo games, but I like the universe in it and the backstory. Whereas I really enjoy Half-Life 2 but I don't find the universe terribly interesting. Don't like any aspect of Gears (yeah, flame me) and I've never played Resistance or Killzone.

#1 goes to the Halo Universe. The games aren't exactly amazing, but I do like the amount of background and the context that each scenario has been placed. It seems so generic at first (alien invasion in future) but simplicity is quite fine, in my opinion.

Half Life has reasonably believeable setting, as though it could have happened, which I kinda liked (a what if scenario). Alternate.

I did not like Gears that much, kinda like poking fun at the human race (well done, you've landed on the one planet with the Locust...). Just did not enjoy that game, both story and gameplay wise.

I cannot comment on Resistance nor Killzone as I have not played either (I have played Killzone 1 but did not enjoy it, and never found out much about backstory).

Halo has the best sci-fi universe of the games on display (40k would shatter them all, but then again that's why it's not on there).

But no doubt, people won't look at the first post/title and just vote 'half-life' because they heard Yahtzee likes it, even though the universe itself is just...dull.
Because its impossible for someone to have an opinion that is the same as Yahtzee without them being a foaming fanboy. I disagree with Yahtzee a few times. (Mass Effect, Mirror's Edge, Half Life, Psychonauts). But for the most part I agree with him because like him, my heart is also a dried up apple of cynicism and misanthropy with a delightful pessimistic caramel shell.
pro-tip - If you're cynical/misanthropic/pessimistic, it should come through in your posts. Telling people that you are makes you look like some sort of scene-kid or something. Then again, foaming at the mouth fanboys do like to do that...

Sadly my favorite game "setting" is not on the poll, if you have room could you add an "other" option?

Anyway my favorite game Universe would have to be the Ivalice depicted in Final Fantasy XII... Probably the most interesting, realistic and down right COOL World ever developed for a Final Fantasy game.

It has REALISTIC nations, religions, geography, different races, bounty hunters, a Star Wars Meets Lord of the Rings vibe that pervades the entire thing...

But most importantly... it has consistancy and conveys the feeling that the world actually EXISTS, that people actually LIVE here and that things OTHER than the main story go on.

The awesomeness of the world alone has made FFXII one of my favorite in the series.

The Halo series has a bad plot, with average gameplay, but I've always thought the universe had potential to be great. Oh well, too late now. They "finished the fight".

Why does the poll feature mostly successful games, with decent gameplay, but shallow, generic story?
Shouldn't it be the other way round?
Do you know anything about any of the stories of any of these? If you ever decide to take the time to read the accompanying novels or watch any of the accompanying videos from the companies, or take a look at any of the backstory for any of these you'll see these are the perfect choices for this poll. As it happens, I voted Halo because it's had more time and much more scope to expand, it's ended up having videos, books, comics and an RTS all released as expansion material which is more overall than any of the others. It also has a greater backstory and there's still tons of unanswered questions, more so than the others, providing extra scope to flesh out the expanded Halo universe.

Kukul, if you don't have a decent point to make then please don't post. We're sick and tired of hearing it all from you.
