The awkward pointlesness disturbs me.

That was different, he is still the original Nick Fury just in this universe just he is black, he isn't some replacement brought in after a white Nick Fury died. Also this was introduced at the start of the ultimate universe, not after 11 years of comics establishing the current Ult. Spiderman.

I....don't....care, personally?

I was never big into superhero comics. The standalone types appeal to me more. Spider man was never a big thing to me. I was more of a Batman fan.

It's not a bad idea, but after reading the reasons, it seems like the characters' ethnicity is simply made black-hispanic because there aren't enough of them in the superhero lineup. That reason seems to undermine the authenticity of the sudden shift in character change. Peter Parker was ingrained in public knowledge as Spider Man, lots of people knew this, killing him off in the way that Marvel did certainly let him go out with a bang, but almost immedeately unmasking a new Spider Man with such a ('convenient' is about the only word that fits, despite it being in poor taste) racial diversity that covers two parts of American Ethnic Groups that aren't as popularly represented in comics seems a bit obvious, and a tad bit predictable, if not shoehorning in race for the sake of a wider demographic appeal, which, coincidentally, will boost sales.

However, despite the seemingly underhanded and shallow reasons, it also represents a good thing, adding more diversity allows more people to get involved with a character that will appeal to many people, and since we have yet to see how his character acts, this may be a change for the better. It all comes down to how he works, what he thinks, how he handles himself. Black or white, he's going to be a hero, let's all hope he does Peter Parker proud.

Ultimate isn't part of the main story right? And all that should really matter is the quality of the writing. I understand people cringing at this maybe being a kind of comic book affirmative action, but they'll come around as long as the writing holds up.

True that, but they didn't make Nick Fury as many minorites as possible just for attention.

Now, I'd have no problem with a black Spider-man, considering this:
Spider-Man said:
The real reason Jameson hates me... is because I'm black! ....................................... Kidding. Sorry.
And we've already had a Mexican one, since 2099, but it seems like they're trying to make him as much as a minority as they can.

From what I heard he's:
-FtM Transgendered
-Possibly Gay
-Dating a Chinese Jewish girl.
-A bunch of other things.

It seems kind of like an attention grab, at them moment.

so what the problem? that comics fan have pretty much gone nuts over this. Some say that this is good thing and other say that this is bullshit and killing peter parker just to put a black person as spiderman is wrong.

oh and before somebody ask dead in the ultimate universe is permanent so far.
I think replacing a doe-eyed nice guy who loses his innocence in front of our eyes with a spiky-haired preppie is a much, much worse offense than making him a mulatto. Besides, mixed race Peter Parker is going to make some beautiful babies with Mary Jane, so they'll reach "sexy age" right around the time I reach creepy old man age.

I already left a comment on the IGN article, but I'll repost it here.

I think the people saying that it doesn't matter since the mainstream Spider-Man is still Peter are all missing the point. I can't speak for everyone who hates this change, but personally I just don't like that this is a character we have never seen or heard of, and is only being made black/hispanic in order to be ethnically diverse- something that even black and hispanic people are groaning over in these comments. While I don't personally like having characters 'taking up the mantle' in comic (With some exceptions), I technically have nothing against a Spider-Man who isn't Peter Parker, or a Spider-Man who isn't white. If this guy had been introduced to us before now, and had been established as one of Peter's friends that could conceivably take up the mantle, then fine. Or even if they had decided to make this into an Ultimate version of Miguel O' Hara and his villains/supporting cast, that too could have been cool.

But nope, brand new character, brand new supporting cast, most likely brand new villains...a superhero is so much more then a costume or a mantle. The person underneath the mask is what makes a superhero who they are. Peter Parker IS Spider-Man, Bruce Wayne IS Batman, Clark Kent IS Superman. It's not just powers and tights. It's why I never actually felt like I was reading Batman when he was replaced with an Iron Man/Punisher wannabe, it's why I never felt like I was reading Spider-Man when Ben Reiley took over, it's why why people hated Frank Castle as Captain America. It just isn't the same without the people who defined what it is to be the specific hero. Maybe Miles will end up being a really great, fun character. Maybe his supporting cast will be the best thing to ever happen to comics. But without Peter Parker, without Mary Jane or Aunt May or Gwen Stacey, without Jameson or the Osbornes to turn Spidey's life into a living hell, it just isn't Spider-Man. It's somebody pretending to be someone else, especially when they have no ties to the supporting cast whatsoever.

Further, if they wanted to make a superhero with a more ethnically-diverse cast, then why not just make a new super hero? Answer: because only hardcore comic fans will hear about it. Marvel wants new readers, and they want to appeal to a larger audience. Since no one will hear about a new super hero, they have to do it with a popular mainstream hero that everyone knows...like Spider-Man. A move like that is more likely to gain attention in the media then a new hero ever would.

I read comics and am a huge spider-man fan and I kinda like where they are going with this. Spider-man has always been someone who was an outcast in their civilian identity but grew famous as a super hero so they could show Spider-man as a different kind of out cast rather than just a geek. My only question is where will he get his powers from. Don't tell me there are more than one radioactive spiders running about.

I'm fine with a black Spider-Man and a Hispanic one. If they make an alternate universe. But I'm in of the belief that killing Peter Parker and replacing him with ANYONE is absolutely unacceptable, race is simply a non-issue here. Not because I don't think they can't be the real Spider-Man or anything, I'm just a big Peter Parker Spidey fanboy.

Just look at it as another new direction the creators are taking the story in. If you want good ole Caucasian Pete just dive into any of the many iterations of Amazing Spider Man. Also, for anyone who wants to argue cannon, that is just pointless. Cannon matters as much in comics as it does in the Legend of Zelda universe. Look at all the stuff that was done in the Amazing universe that was basically wiped off the map after "One More Day." If anything, I hope this new change kick-starts Ultimate Spider Man because I really didn't care for the teen drama it became leading up to Ultimatum. I'm surprised the Smallville producers haven't spotted this and started planning a show about it.

Being a fan of Ultimate Spider Man, I have to say that if you take the story seriously, you can only barely compare it to any other storylines, cannon or not, because the ultimate universe is very loosely tied to the other verses.

Think about this:

Gwem Stacy is brought back to life as carnage

Jessica Drew aka Spider Woman, is a near perfect female clone of Peter (which to me actually made more sense of her character, I never understood or liked the "I'm Spider Woman but my powers are flight and blasting electricity which has no relevance to being spider-like")

Eddie Brock was practically Peter's brother due to the closeness of their families

Ultimate Spider Man begins with Peter as a high school freshman instead of a senior like Amazing and Spectacular;

EDIT: Just read a post before mine that nullified this statement

isn't future Spider Man/Spider Man 2099 Mexican or Latin? based on the examples, is it not possible that this new Black & Hispanic mix is loosely based on Spider Man 2099?

Considering I have never cared much for Spiderman ever, I guess it's a moot issue for me.

Batman ftw.

Sometimes I wonder why I bother with posts like that on IGN, it's not like anyone there ever responds to a post that doesn't try to be condescending or insulting.

OK, I was kidding anyway, but...Chinese, Jewish, African and Hispanic genes?

Yeah, the general rule is, the more diverse the dna, the better looking the person, though there are exceptions. I mean, I'm Irish, Gypsy, German and French-Creole, and I look like a cross between Steve Buscemi and Billy Bob Thornton.

I don't have any issues with spider-man being a black guy I have issues with them killing and replacing peter parker. Spider-man was never about the costume but always about the man in the costume, unlike some other characters who are filling a position or a job.
