so there it is: what was your favourite total war game? myself i'm torn between shogun and medival 2.

shogun because it was quick to master and woth the right moves and development, plus no fear of spend spen spend, style of play it was easy to win, i replayed it yesterday and manged to rule more than half of japan within two hours

medival 2 because it took longer, but the graphics were better, the maps were bigger and the cities and economies and everything were more realistic, it was also an improvement on rome because in rome the roman factions were obviously supposed to be the ones you chose, they developed further and had a more diverse range of troops.

i'm going to vote medival though simply because i can play it and get a more fullfiling experiance al round, cause the battle feild combat in shogun was rubish

Rome, they nailed the forumla there, it didnt get boring too quickly, it looked gourgoues and all the factions were interesting and well varied, even though half the units were a varation of hoplites..

It's a close call between Rome and Medieval 2.

I also enjoyed Empire, but seeing as my friend had to sell it (my PC sucks so I can only play them at his) I haven't been able to witness the day it got properly patched up. Plus the game crashed every time I was about to win a naval battle I'd been predicted to fail.

They kicked a lot of arse though you must admit.

I had lots of fun in Medieval 2. Specially since I made it so the Papal States were a playable nation... Did that same for the SPQR in Rome. Note: Being the Papal States makes you love the inquisitors for once. =3

It's a tie between Rome and Medieval (vanilla). Those two really hit the nail on the head. Just right in most regards. I never could get into any of the Kingdoms campaigns. Small maps, few factions, just felt like total clusterfucks to me.

Also, I never managed to get much enjoyment from the various mega-mods for the two games. Europa Barbarorum was punishingly difficult to the point where all fun was gone from it, and Stainless Steel had ridiculously cheating AI. No, enemy factions shouldn't get full stacks of High period units every turn you are at war with them, it's just not fun to play like that...

I went with other... I really, really didn't like the Total War series. I just couldn't enjoy them, which is odd, I usually like games similar to this.

EMPIRE! For some reason. Once it got fixed.

My PC can barely run it on medium, but its frikkin sweet. Rome is also great, in fact the whole series is, especially Shogun :D

i know, you really have to be the kind of guy that loves going through his towns and schedualing his own national development program and bringing order to everyone. i really never liked rome as much as medival cause it was blatently slanted in favour of rome and the carthagininas or the parthians

shogun was more equal but never had enough variation for me in terms of factions

Empire Total War. Once it got patched of course.
tell me: how was the sea battle feature after the patches? i only ask cause i never really played empire and was wondering: appart from a lager map with india and the americas more involved did it add any significant evolution at all? or was it a glossed up tactics changed remake of the pressedor?

Rome for me.

Though empire has proven fairly entertaining. My problem with that game is the fact that the computer AI had difficulty defeating a static prepared defense because they NEVER seem to invest in morters nor do they attempt to flank. Generally they just up to the line through shot and shell only to arrive and meet a wall of cannister shot. While they do manage to push back segments of my line from time to time a small force in reserve generally prevents a breach and they never seem to bother exploiting the weakness of a successful assult choosing instead to continue pitting their line (which isn't in cover) agaisnt my line (which is) and failing miserably.

Medieval 2, though it could've been better, obviously, particularly the AI.
Haven't played Kingdoms enough to really regard them.

Had a blast with Rome once though, in particular with the Julii Romans and the Seleucids (Armoured War Elephants = Mmmmm...)

Empire... doesn't really interest me, the entire Imperial/Gunpowder/Colonisation Age is the period in time I deem as the most yawn-worthy. More strategy, maybe, but no more armies really crashing together up close and personal where strength and physical skill at arms count more than how much better you are at aiming a gun than the other guy. : <

However, for future Total War games, the most awesome idea would be one that covers a few areas of the world (Such as the Americas, Europe and East Asia) at certain points in time (say, year 900-1800? Or more) as to cover the interests of most people?
While some, like me, would prefer to take it on in Medieval Europe during the mid-1200's, others might take it in the War of Independence in the Americas while other might want to have it in Feudal Japan?
Some sort of "Anno Domini: Total War"? : o

Really? The parthians always get slaughtered by neighbouring factions when i've played Rome, and I found that the Greeks were the easiest to play with. Just my style I guess, I've always liked Rome the best

Well they try flanking manouvers alright, but they are hopeless suicidal cavalry charges against your flanks. I feel like smacking the computer and screaming 'This isnt medieval cavalry dont work anymore >.<'

OT : Ermm thats a tough one.

Please remeber some of these +'s and -'s are simply what I think or can remember havent played some of these games in ages.

Shogun
+ Was the first in the series
+ The monks were loonies =D

- The way the map is made of big blocks of teritory is outdated

Medieval 1
+ Wide unit choice
+ Being able to pick early, high and late period was an amazing idea

- Once again large territory blocks
- The way factions could come back with 'rebel' armies that a king would be proud of got very annoying when you had a large empire

Rome
+ Legionaries are awesome
+ If you wanted a challenge you could go one of the european barbarian nations
+ Massive blocks of heavy infantry make my mouth water
+ Repairing units was fast

- Diplomacy? Whats that? Long standing 'Allies' blocading your ports anyone <.<
- Rather limited unit choice for some nations

Medieval 2
+ (Mmmm where to start) Wide choice of varied and visually stunning troops
+ Cavalry charges are perfectly capable of blowing armies off the face of the planet
+ Heavy infantry <3 plenty of armoured idiots to choose from :) ps: Venetian heavy infantry or Janisaries (the ones with the haldberds) are insane
+ Factions dont come back and rape your Empire while your armies are busy elsewhere

- Building new units was annoying if you had just built a building due to the ( I have no idea whats its called) when you could only train a max of 3 or 4 and then had to wait for them to replenish
- Diplomacy is once again non existent
- City AI can be and often is useless
- Town Sieges are stupidly frequent in this game for some reason :\
- Revolts taking your towns anyone <.<

Empire
+ Naval combat \o/ was done extremely well I think, its dificult but doable
+ The economy, map layout (Region capitals, and outlying smaller buildings) is the best yet
+ Naval trade should and does play a huuge part in the game, keep those pirates away from your trade routes >.< liked the trade posts too
+ Ranged combat was done very well I think
+ Diplomacy actually works YAY, now you can pay a bit of cash keep nation A happy while you smush Nation B and then turn back to Nation A =D
+ The map is very big and its possible to not even get to one of the larger Landmasses before completing your objectives

- There are only so many variations of 'carries muskets' soldiers you can have so unit choice is small compared to medieval
- Hand to hand combat is so bad its painfull to watch
- I thought the unit prices were placed stupidly high it took me ages before I could afford to support a second army

Right that took a wee bit hehe, but I think I got most of it down. For whats it worth Rome and Medival would probably get my vote for combat, Medieval for unit choices. Empire has easily got the best map layout and economy system with naval combat that kicks ass. But as I have to vote I'd say Medieval 2 because having large blocks of shiny infantry is great.

I think that a game set in medieval times using empires economy, naval and diplomacy system with the unit choice and combat of Medieval 2 would kick some serious arse and yes I'd buy it AGain haha.

Probably spent most time with Med 2, many a sunday afternoon wasted with the Byzantines!

Empire was a big disapointment, I've tried to like it but it's clear that after several patches the game is just unfinished and probably needed at least another 6 months in development.

Releasing unfinished strategy games seems to be becoming something of a trend as Hearts of Iron 3 was also released in a shocking state.

Rome is awesome, if they did a remake I'd actually be excited. Rome just rules so much.
