Which suggests that either he's a functional language weenie or he has difficulty with pointers. Not that I'm defending C# - I don't understand why people want to shoehorn Smalltalk elements into everything new - or entirely criticising functional languages.
Considering he has been in the the IT dept for nearly 20 years and has been coding since before I was born, I think he knows what he is talking about and isn't a 'weenie'.

Why is anyone saying devs will switch over to Mac? Mac is more restrictive than any platform out there, they don't even let Nvidia make drivers for the video cards in their systems.

I really don't think Mac is considerable as an alternative when they pull crap like that. I mean I'm aware of Microsoft pulling some stupid BS but no one said devs can't 'boycott' and keep making games for windows 7 with limited or no support for windows 8. Microsoft would have to rework their plans.

Integration with Windows Live accounts (now called Microsoft accounts)
DEFINITELY do not want.
When you set up an account on Win8 you can choose to make a local account rather than a Microsoft account.

OT: Devs will probably stick with PC. Win8 is only locked down if you want to develop shit for their app store, but you can still install stuff from disks and/or downloaded installers.

Off Topic but Still Relevant: I'm sure businesses will steer clear of this since it is a more home-based OS. Also seeing as Microsoft is extremely bipolar when it comes to the quality of their OS's I will probably just stick to Win7, at least until I hear the reviews of it.

Could you give some more information? I myself can't get used to programming using any other language than C++. Just asking.

Devs probably will stick to Windows 8 because screw intellect. But I Hope they go to Linux. Its about time the master race OS became the master race of gaming too.

I'll see if I can talk to him at lunch. Anything in particular you want to know?

All I'd like to see is what's his opinion on C and such. Nothing that big.

They said that as a kneejerk reaction to the fact that Steam is on it and Steam = more games. Some people didn't think this through...

I've tried Linux many times, most recently Ubuntu a couple years ago, and with that updates kept not finishing correctly, which left the OS a total mess, and when I was trying to fix it I ended up breaking it even worse because I got some bad advice. So one format and re-install later I ended up having the same problem with the automatic updates and in my blind attempt to fix it I somehow managed to break the bootloader.

After hacking that back together into something that kinda sorta works now, I did eventually get the OS up and running properly. Then I proceeded to never use that laptop again because my desktop has Windows, which has all the programs I actually use on it.

I certainly would like to like Linux. In theory it's great. In practice it's not worth the headache, especially when its apps don't really match up with Windows'.

He prefers Java and Perl languages, and dislikes Microsoft in general. I suspect he wishes that the university would use Ubuntu as its standard OS. (needless to say we are not upgrading from Windows 7 Enterprise to 8)

Using Windows 8 right now. Been making a gradual switch from 7 on my desktop and so far I really like it. Having all that information right in front of me on the Start Screen is really nice and snapping an app to the side of the screen is really good. Especially when using the chat app.

Most AAA games have Mac versions (Bethesda being a huge exception), but I don't know if it could ever become the main OS for game devs. Largely just for marketing reasons. Probably 80% of people who play AAA computer games do so on a PC. If we're including the appstore though? It's probably closer to being even. It depends on the game and the developer. But overall, I don't think AAA shooters and anything with physics engines will be Mac exclusive.

I guess there's nothing really stopping them from switching to a Mac focus; it's possible, but most Computer gamers go with Windows. From a marketing standpoint...I guess Windows 7/vista with OSX as the usual backup plan. I don't think much will change, but there will be notable backlash regarding windows 8.

Linux will work just as well for all five people who use it.

I'm assuming they'll mostly stick with Windows, as that's what the most people use.

I use Linux (specifically Ubuntu) at work, because it's slightly better as a coding environment, but I use Windows at home.

Some of my work machine's less endearing habits are:
- It refuses to play Youtube videos in Chrome or Firefox until the page has been refreshed several times.
- It goes into complete meltdown if Eclipse (the program I code in) throws a wobbly.
- It loses my screen settings if I unplug the KVM and plug it back in again.
- In over a year of working at the company, I have not once managed to get it to connect to a printer.

My work machine has twice the RAM of any of my home computers, and a far meatier processor. I use both Eclipse and a KVM at home (on Windows) with no problems.

Long story short: At work, I value the extra control that using Linux gives me. At home, I just want things to work! Especially when I'm chilling out playing games.

EDIT: And a I bloody hope they don't move to Macs as the only non-console platform. I do not want to pay Apple's prices to get a gaming machine! Competition is good, people. Having a single hardware provider is not.

I watched a forty minute review on Windows 8 and I didn't like the look of it at all. I don't like the look of Metro and I don't like how it boots up to Metro first. I shouldn't have to select the desktop from that awful looking Metro interface. The desktop should be the first thing that boots up. Tablet interfaces do not belong on desktops or laptops. They belong on tablets.

I plan on sticking with Windows 7 for all my gaming needs.
