Alphabetical except for movie series, which are in whatever passes for numerical order and then overall alphabetized according to "series identifier".

Hybrid really.

I have things grouped into multiple areas, more or less.

Favorites, Anime, Star Trek/sci fi (yes, there's enough star trek for it's own shelf. Immediately next to it is Red Dwarf, if you must know)

Recent stuff (a shelf which isn't really sorted, but just contains my most recent films),

Then there's a collection of what's mostly childrens films, and a general 'film' collection for everything else.

The Anime, Star Trek, and favorites areas are sorted are in series order, then alphabetically, and everything else is alphabetical.

I just don't find much need to figure things out by genre much though. And I'd have a hard time deciding what belongs where regardless.

Alphabetical order is just a convenience to prevent total randomness so there's at least some way of figuring out where something I own is.

I am so picky at how I sort my things and it's in a way only I understand. It seems simple to me but I don't understand why people can't find the movies their looking for when I only have 15 movies and 5 anime boxsets. First I sort them anime/Japanese and English. Then I sort them by genre (and I only have three genres: anime, horror and comedy). After that it's sorted by favorites. That's how I sort everything, games music and books (except I also add in series length when it comes to manga).

I am a nerdy sod though - I have a spreadsheet of my DVDs, with Genre, Actors, Director, year, run time and so forth, so you can sort them by each criteria, to find what you want, if you're in the mood for something slightly more specific.
I use to do this and I also tried to keep a list with me on my phone so I could easily check if I already owned a movie before buying it again. That happened to me A LOT. I gave up on the spreadsheet though when I found myself spending more time on it than actually watching my collection. I've also given away a HUGE chunk of my DVDs to make more room for Blurays, including any TV series I had except for Firefly. Hoping to get the Bluray of it for Christmas. Fingers crossed!

I have five media towers with a little space left in the fifth. First tower is for Comedy, Romantic, and Family Blurays. Second is for Superhero, War, Western, and Kung Fu Blurays. Third is for Action, Drama and Sci-Fi. Fourth is for Horror Blurays and Action and Horror DVDs. Fifth is for All my other DVDs. And then I have all my Bluray box sets along with the LotR DVDs along the top.

My organization isn't perfect and I fully understand the issue of where to properly place certain movies but it still seems so much easier to just have to look at one section of my collection when I'm in the mood for something. Especially if I'm trying to find something interesting to watch with the kids around. And if I'm in the mood to watch Die Hard for the billionth time, I know it'll be on tower 3, most likely easy to find not only because it's bigger in the bundled case but also cause I know I'll be more likely to watch it so I will try to place it on one of the ends.

I do sort other things sort of the same way too. Books are by series, with favorite series up higher. Hardback lower on the shelf cause they're harder for my son to pull out and mess up. Music is sorted Hardest to Softest so I can quickly find something to listen to depending on the mood I'm in. And games are sorted by genre, actually starting with my music DVDs/ Blurays, going into Guitar Hero/ Rock Band games, leading into Family games, then Action (least to most mature) and finally ending with RPGs which are sorted themself by type. I also got rid of most my games due to not having as much time to game anymore. They all fit along the top of my dresser now. Got to love the kiddies!

I sort mine by genre. then I sort mine by Alphabetical. Then By date (year), then lead actor/actress's last name, then finally color of the cause by ROY G. BIV spectrum. and if all that fails i just put them in random order.

Well I'm at college right now, so the few movies I have are just in a pile. At home, my mom organized all of our movies alphabetically, so I keep them that way.

Just randomly; they're all in a shelf. Not too worried as there are hardly any movies.

I keep my movies organized in this order:

1. Genre
2. Is it a part of series of movies or does it have same leading actor
3. Release date(left to right)

Pretty much the same deal for games with a few exceptions.

I don't really sort them. Movies in a series are kept together in the natural order of the narrative (so I would put Star Wars: The Phantom Menace before Star Wars: A New Hope). Beyond that it's pretty much random though over time my favorite movies tend to migrate towards the front of the set.

Organised by title with each shelf dedicated to particular certificate, or at least it should be it gets mess up quite a lot.

My sister wanted to organise them by colour, I told her to shut up. I can remember what a film is called, I can't remember what bloody colour the DVD case is, not to mention about 75% have black cases.
