That might me where you went wrong. Vaan wasn't supposed to be the 'main' character. The game focused on them as a group.
Not really. He was meant to be the link between them all, which is fine, but he was really dull and unenthusiastic. He was just pretty plain.

No (edit: FF) game ever wants you to look at a group of characters as one entity. That'd be a bit wasteful IMO.

They should have stuck the game on 2 disks and made it longer. It was a little on the short side too sadly :(

I think Square Enix in general sucks. I haven't seen a single title by them that I thought was interesting or had a half-decent storyline.
The last good Final Fantasy game was X, and that was the last game made by Squaresoft. The merger totally ruined them, I think.
I don't even bother checking out their titles anymore.

Considering the last 4 real games made by them X-2 (sucked) 11 (wtf mate) 12 (sucked) and the up and coming 13, which seems to be overhyped and they sold out to 360, what are your opinions on Square Enix. (and yes despite what people say ten was made by Squaresoft)

But besides those "original games" who here has seen the infinite remade old FF games (1-5 and soon to be 6, plus Tactics and Crisis Core)("FF:CC" isn't a remake but its a prelude to the already fine FF:7) Pretty much, Square Enix is riding the coat tails of Square and Squaresoft. That's only my opinion though

Edit: they've even made a cheap FF:T knock off which is called tactics advanced >.> and have even remade that =O

and on a side note, i personally believe the FF7 series has been butcher beyond recognition, and shouldn't be "remade" anymore. PLEASE SQUARE STOP REDOING FINAL FANTASY 7 BADLY, if your gonna remake it, please just update graphics possibly add voice overs and change nothing else.

Please post your comments and thoughts por favor
-How are those the last 4 real games? I figure a game doesn't have to be a numbered Final Fantasy to be "real"
-I'm sick of this 360 BS. What makes more money, releasing a game for one system or two? PS3 owners lose absolutely nothing, so stop complaining.
-So far the only remakes not to add anything worth having were the PS1 remakes, and that doesn't count FF5, since most people hadn't played it. Some may argue the "anniversary editions" were a little pointless, but if I made a game series that stayed popular for over 20 years, I'd re-release the first few to celebrate, too.
-How the heck do you knock off your own game series? I'm very curious.
-Okay, so I can agree with you about FFVII, but once XIII finally comes out, they'll have a new subseries to play with and we won't have to worry about seeing any more.

I have to wonder if they fired all the guys who worked on Star Ocean and kept all the cheesy bastards that worked on the Breath of Fire series.

If the above revelation is true, then by all means it was a parasitic deathblow to a good company.
Star Ocean, Radiata Stories, Valkyrie Profile and the like are made by Tri-Ace, a somewhat separate company that just happens to use Enix as a publisher.

The word is "spinoff", not knock off. And remind again why it's a bad thing to expand on a world they've made? One of my deepest regrets so far is not playing Tactics all the way through, but I completed Tactics Advance (thank you long plane rides!). As far as I know, they're almost entirely separate stories, only linked by the world and by the gameplay. There's nothing wrong with that. Saying there is makes you seem foolish.

X-2 (sucked)
I didn't mind X-2. The gameplay I found more than adequate. Admittedly I found the story a little bit iffy it must be said, but the dress sphere system added a nice little tactical edge to the fights. I quite enjoyed it. Though I wasn't a fan of the Ultra-Special Perfect 100% Good ending =/

13, which seems to be overhyped
Eh? About as hyped up as any other game in this day and age. No more hyped up than MGS4, Halo 3 or whichever MMO you choose to point your hype stick at.

and on a side note, i personally believe the FF7 series has been butcher beyond recognition, and shouldn't be "remade" anymore.
While I agree with the sentiment of leaving the FF7 world to rest, using the word remade is foolish. As I stated previously, they were spinoffs. AC, DoC and CC. I quite enjoyed AC and CC, DoC less so but it was fairly average. Not bad by any means. They've hardly 'butchered' the series. Each game added something to the story as well as relating back to the world as a whole. CC did this best in my opinion, but AC and DoC have their own positive aspects as well.

I applaud any steps Square make to go away from the Final Fantasy series, but I still enjoy playing them. I don't begrudge them for making more of them either.

Should I start a poll/post about Capcom now?
Or talk about the gameport advance?

I have have a lot of fun playing FF IV Remake on the DS, I also liked Advent Children and still love games like Chrono Trigger and FF VI and VIII.

If someone can name one big game studio that never had it's misses. I will personaly see to it that you will get a statue, a personal shrine and cult following.

I have the feeling that here is some complaining for the sake of complaining.
If you really want to piss on a game company
Aim at Lucas Arts or EA, They deserve it a lot more than Square-Enix.

Square-Enix are the Gaming Equivalent of George Lucas, still making money from the one good idea they had whilst necro-morphing it.

Either way they're screwed with people like us.

If they keep remaking the FF series, people are going to cry fowl

But when they make something that's not part of the FF series or doesn't have Final Fantasy in the name, it flys under the radar in these types of thread.

I hardly think that FF-XIII is overhyped, as there's barely enough information as to what the hell it is.

Just let them do their thing, and stop buying their games if you hate them so much. I've never been a fan of most Square games but I have enjoyed some of them like The World Ends With You and FFTA2

Cheap knock off?
you definitely haven't played it,
because imo the Tactics Advance series are the better games made by Square Enix.
actually yeah i did play tactics advance, and the stupid judge system really ruined the game, i didn't play the second TA but i think its pretty much the same game

Uh, Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile games aren't SE developed one bit. Both of those were developed entirely by Tri-Ace, and simply published by SE because Enix used to be Tri-Ace's publisher.

As for the love or hate for SE, I still can't decide. For as many games they put out that I love, they put out 4 others I find to be terrible. And have been like this for a while. Probably their best era was on the PS1. FF7 regardless of overhype was still a great game, and they put out Xenogears, Vagrant Story, Legend of Mana(screw you I liked it :O), and the Parasite Eve games. Now the only things I'll play of thiers are FF10, 12, and 4 remake. Which fyi the 4 remake is actually valid as a remake for once, it's a good redo.

I found Vaan's placement to be an overdue self-commentary. All of the FF games are always throwing these children into epic, world-fate deciding scenarios (which is cathartic, don't get me wrong), and I found it interesting to have him in a party with people who were actually somewhat equipped to deal with it, or at least more likely to, while he never really turned into an idealized hero. Refreshing.

And I think the apparently stale character development (apparent because I never really felt that way) came from the fact that you didn't travel the world obtaining new party members with vastly different values and motivations. Everyone was in the fight for the same reason, which was definitely a much smaller scale than we're use to. It was just a more intimate game.

EDIT: But it is definitely too short.

Square-Enix is a lost cause to me. And I've realized this since playing the oh-so-godawful Dirge of Cerberus. I've realized that it's nothing but pretty graphics and pretentious storylines. And I don't know, maybe it's the nostalgia talking, but it seems like the earlier Square Enix games weren't half as bad.
Now, like I said, there's always a possibility that the only reason I liked FF7 and FF8 is because when I first played them I was young enough not to know a good game from a bad one. In which case, maybe if I played them for the first time now, I'd find them as bad. But as it stands right now, the new Square-Enix products have no appeal to me whatsoever. In fact, it sounds like I'm saving myself a lot of pain by NOT playing them.
But that's just a matter of personal preference. My point is that at one point, I DID like their games. So either my standards have raised, which is a definite possibility, or their products witnessed a massive decline.

Oh, Square-Enix... There's so much I could say about it, but I just know my points have already been made.

I will say this, though: I'm getting pretty damn tired of the "angsty pretty boy" main character mold. Granted, Vaan broke the trend slightly... But only because he had no personality whatsoever. Seriously, he was like plank of wood to me. I just... I got nothin'.

It's gotten to the point that Tidus has become my favorite protagonist of the series, because he's capable of expressing a full range of emotions and doesn't seem to have that same allergy to bright colors.
