Shadow of Chernobyl with AMK 1.4 was definitely one of the most immersive FPSs ever. Sadly the bugs and the difficulty scares away the masses. And something that's even sadder is that most of that was just rumors anyway. With the later patches that came out after a few months the game was stable enough to just have one or two minor crashes for easily 10-20 hours and most of that was probably just my computer anyway. And as for difficulty let me put it like this. The only FPSs i've played prior to SoC was the original Half-Life and No One Lives Forever and i finished neither of them although i played some levels more than a few times.

There are some good things about that though. At least that means we won't ever see bossfights, regenerative health and linearity in Stalker. I think that Clear Sky was a try to appeal to a wider audience but it ended up alienating the original fans of SoC, at least to a degree.

Clear Sky was, in my opinion, everything Shadow of Chernobyl could have been, but just missed out. As a huge fan of the series, I'd heartily recommend Clear Sky.

It has features such as a night which is actually pitch black, in that you can barely see in front of your face, less bugs (although there are still a fair few), and DX10 support. And might I add that it looks fantastic in DX10.

SoC, CS's requirements were ridiculous for the improvements made, the story was dull, I hate unnecessary prequels, the final parts sucked (I mean, why get the best guns and armour if they are just gonna go and give you something that's 10 times better and you won't be able to go back?), I hated the swamp.

I know CS had some good stuff, like detectors, upgrades, repairing and fast travel, but most of those things you could get on SoC with mods, and the feeling of non-linearity and free roaming was infinitely better in Shadow of Chernobyl than in Clear Sky.

with the Oblivion Lost mod for SoC, get the original. Without it, get Clear Sky.

The faction wars was a huge turn-off for me at least. Since i never picked a side to fight for in fear that i might miss out on some upgrades, suits or weapons i ended up neutral to everyone and had therefore no enemies to fight except for mutants and the zombified stalkers. The upgrades to suits and weapons and the DX 10 support was a huge plus but in the end couldn't make up for the lack of tension and fear of it's SoC.

In the mods department SoC wins pretty hard as well. There are at least 4 huge overhaul mods that are still being developed. Clear Sky on the other hand doesn't really have any that i can think of. At least none that are comparable in size.

Hopefully, Call Of Pripyat will be a merge of the best of parts of SoC and CS with some new experimental stuff added in for trial until Stalker 2.

SoC, by a mile. I never hit all of the famed glitches either; in fact I think I beat the entire game without any trouble. The Witcher was a different story, another game rumoured to be very buggy.

I've used the oblivion lost mod on SOC and it makes the game vastly superior to clear sky, on top of the fact that clear sky doesnt even remotely scare you at any point compared to SOC, it just annoys you with its shite ending.
