i believe the film did kinda ruin the WHOLE original series, with pike only captaining the enterprise for one mission other than the years he is meant to, and that volkan is gone already... they messed up the time scale a wee bit
Vulcan is a crutch to the Federation, to be honest. They are often the "MacGuffin" of the Star Trek universe - if you have a problem you can't solve, call the Vulcans.

I thought the point of the film was to reboot the franchise, and create an entertaining movie to be enjoyed by all moviegoers. I'd say it was succesful.

I'm not saying it's a perfect movie, but I dislike it when people come out of the wood work to say, "THIS IS NOT STAR TREK BECAUSE THERE IS NO GIANT SAVE THE WHALES TYPE MESSAGE LIKE IN 4, 5, AND 6!!!!"

Because that's a bullshit expectation generated by the period in which the movies were made (the 80's) and Star Trek has always been first and foremost about the characters running around the galaxy exploring and blowing shit up.

I don't know what film you were watching...
But this movie was actually entertaining.

I don't understand you people.
You'll hold your standards so unbelievably high when it comes to movies, that it makes it so that you cannot spend your money wisely on them.
Movies are not always meant to provoke thought - sometimes they are simply meant to be enjoyed.

I am a fan of the original Star Trek series.
I have seen a majority of the episodes with my father and brothers.
I also happened to find this movie very well done.

This Star Trek caters to the new generation that will appreciate it.
The old episodes of Star Trek are for the generation that grew up with it, and now the series is finding fans within the younger people.

I think Abrams did an excellent job with this film.
You went in intending to not enjoy it, so I'm sure your mind was blown when you didn't.

You should well be aware that even a mining ship would need to be able to defend itself, and in the future, those "heavy weapons" would be piss poor compared to say, quantum torpedoes. And as you are very well aware, but choosing to ignore, say 100 years, is more than enough to give a ship the leading edge against everything. Example, Voyager finale, where the Captain comes back from the future, so only about 25 years, allowing the crew to go from average ship, to being able to defeat the most hostile aliens in the galaxy.
The difference being, however, that Star Trek: Voyager itself is a set a lot further in the future than Star Trek.
As such, if we say that Nero is from, perhaps, 100 years in the future, that does not necessarily mean there were massive improvements, and to be honest - if you compare Voyager and the original ships - there doesn't even seem to be major revolutions.
alot can change in 100 years. Especially when it comes to technology and weapons. look back 109 years - the year 1900. Queen victora was still alive (For the beginning of it. She died later that year). The Highest tech of weaponry was a very large, several people-to-man-it machine gun that was flimsy and expensive. And then everything else was early bolt action rifles and bayonets.

Now, highest tech in weaponry is prototype laser rifles (Seriously..) also weapons disguised as breifcases, which electrocute and stun you when you pass them, using a motion sensor. We also have cameras on rifle to allow us to look around corners with a now not-so-blind-fire system, where we are safe yet accurate.

And that kind of thing youd see in say, halo, or even DBZ where they have a screen like object infront of one eye, and this allows the soldiers to see what the rest of their squad is seeing, receive orders quickly, quietly and clearly, and get instant 3D map access of every spot on the globe. So, yes, alot can happen in 100 years. All of the weapons and gear described above are protoypes or already, newly in use by the US military and a few others in Iraq.

Ok, well, ta-da, its my wall of text. All to make a point about technology change over 100 years. We have HALO-ESQUE technology...(See 'what DBZ fans would call a scouter') Although i dont really wanna argue, I just had info lying around from watching future weapons on a documentary channel XD

As a Star Trek layman I quite liked this film, I haven't watched the others, yes there was a lot of corny behaviour, cliché dialogue etc. However it was a good film in its own right, I certainly don't regret watching it.

I agree with the idea that this film wasn't that good. Yes, it had good action, good CGI and all that stuff, but it just didn't feel like a star trek film to me, just like episode 1 to 3 didn't feel like star wars.
