I'd say 4-6 first, but everyone already knows about Darth Vader and Luke's relationship, so that surprise is ruined. Maybe... Actually watch the original trilogy anyway. Just get the re-mastered disks, because the original special effects of the first films turn them from pretty dramatic into comedies. :p
What re-mastered ones? No keep it classic
They re-did the special effects, didn't they?
Redid, yes. But they also redid some scenes, like the "Greedo Shot First" one.

Also, Jabba looked hideous in the remastered version.

OT: 4-6, obviously. Then watch 1-3, making sure to hit the mute button whenever Jar Jar is on screen.
What do you mean, they changed the Greedo scene?

Completely agree about the Jar Jar thing though. :p

Watch 4-6, then read all the novelizations of 1-6.

...then if you really want to see 'em go ahead and watch 1-3. They really don't tell the story well, but the action sequences are neat if you turn your brain off.

4-6, then 4-6 again. There are no other Star Wars movies, remember?

Watch them in the order they were made. 4-6, then 1-3.
And for 4-6, get the -original- versions.

Well, in the original, Han shot Greedo first. But Lucas thought it made Han look like a bad guy, so in the remastered edition, he made it so that Greedo shot at Han first. Here's the clips:

I always turn my head in agony when I see Han's head akwardly moving to the side to avoid Greedo's supposed first shot.

Is it even possible to get the original movies without all that crap they shoved into it?

4-6 then 1-3. Recently I decided to watch them in chronological order, (coincidence, I'm not a huge Star Wars fan I was just bored,) and it doesn't work. With 1-3 you realise how bad the whole thing is and following with 4-6 you realise how kitschy it looks and how lame the saber fighting is. Say what you want about the death-by-CGI of Clones and Sith in particular but more tech allowed IL+M and Lucasfilm to pull off some cool fights. Watching it 4-6 and then 1-3 you can actually appreciate the kitschiness as well as the considerable feat the first three were before being entertained by some of the visuals and action of the prequels, (while ignoring Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christiansen as much as humanly possible.)

Also, watching the re-done originals, I find it very weird to hear a NZ Maori accent coming from Boba Fett's helmet.

But... But... they totally missed the point there. Han's supposed to be morally shady and... and... damn. :p Glad I never got around to seeing the newer version then.

4,5,6 then if you must 1,2,3. The non-special edition versions if you can, as most of the changes in the SEs are not exactly for the better (although I must say some of the cleaned up effects look nice).

Watching the prequels first makes the original trilogy feel strangely redundant -- why are we being introduced to C3PO and R2D2 in ANH when we've already seen them in three films before? Why is the fact Darth Vader is Anakin Skywalker a surprise? The entire Yoda scene is spoiled, as we bloody well know he is a Jedi Master and not just a weird Muppet, etc..

And then ask if she understands everything.
Lol.

If she really hasn't seen a single Star Wars movie, then the first she should see should really (I had to think about about how I typed that...) she the original Star Wars, episode 4. It has a certain magic to the way it introduces you to the Star Wars universe, and Darth Vader will come across as the mysterious badass villain. She won't know about the young, whiney version of him in the prequel trilogy. Also, Jar Jar Binks is so goddamn annoying, he should not be a part of her first Star Wars experience.

Watch the Original 3 then have her read Darths and Droids for a far more entertaining expeirence than being forced to sit through the Prequels.

What you could do, though, is watch the Prequels, but skip through everything that isn't a battle or saber duel.

The original trilogy is what made Star Wars great. Now as it happens, I actually don't think the prequels are that bad, however, the first three has a magic that is left behind by the new movies. Also you should show her the original copies which haven't been tampered with.

You forgot KOTOR. It's nice that there was a visual representation of something before the Empire existed, so you could at least mention it.

I say watch 1-6. It just tells a much better story IMHO.

in 4-6 the hero is Luke
in 1-3 the hero is Obiwan

in 1-6 the hero is Anakin

As you and others have said, Vader as Luke's father and Leah as Luke's sister should really not come as a surprise to her all. I assume she is a mature enough person to understand why the technology that is supposed to take place 20 years later looks inferior to what is seen in the prequels.

Also, there is a DVD version out there that says it has the original theatrical release on it. I kinda want to recommend that. There are some scenes on the special editions where I just have to look away. I think everyone here knows what I'm talking about when I say "There is 1 scene in particular in Episode 6, Jabba's Palace". You all know the one.

If you could, get the special edition and some video editing software and just cut out the bad scenes, or edit in the superior original scenes (Han shot first). Aside from those, the special editions do look really nice. If you can't do that, then try to get the original theatrical version DVD I mentioned.

You can find them on Amazon.

And why would you want to end on Episode 3? That's horrible. Ending on Episode 6 is just so satisfying.

Unless you're planning on making her watch 4-6, 1-6, but even as a star wars fan that is a little bit cruel. She could watch it 4-6 theatrical, 1-3, 4-6 special edition. Then she could hate the special editions as much as the rest of us. But as I said it would be cruel; unless you're going 1 movie a day, but who wants to do that?

Good question, I suppose watching 4-6 first is the best thing to do, thats how most did and they seemed fine... then again ending on 3 isn't exactly something that'd leave a good taste in your mouth...
