Well, I'm a huge fan of RTS games, let me say that right off the bat. I thoroughly enjoy Age of Empires, Dawn of War, Command and Conquer, WarCraft, you know, all the good stuff, but I recently got bored with all my games. People have been talking a lot about StarCraft and StarCraft 2, and I was really curious as to whether buying the first one would actually be worth it for me.

So, I just simply want some thoughts on the game and whether or not it's truly as good as it's been rated, from my fellow Escapists.

Worth every penny. If you like all of those RTS then you will like StarCraft. Bought the game bout 6 years ago and still have more fun playing it then I do current games. Def worth picking up and trying out.

Its just addicting to me. Three different races that all have their strengths and weaknesses so you can find many different ways going about with each group. Story is really well done and the missions are always varied and fun. Gameplay is like any other RTS, but always found myself liking StarCraft better then any other RTS.

Starcraft was the first RTS game to actually balance the classes, giving each set of units pros and cons. Beforehand all RTS games would have different factions with either different colors or names, but be essentially the same unit. The single player campaign was both interesting and engrossing. I would rather cut off my leg and be forced to eat it than give up this game. (I chose leg because if I hand to cut an arm off, whats the point of RTS's).

Yes, one of the best RTS ever made if not the finest.
But I would recommend buying the Starcraft + expansion bundle.

If you can handle the eye bleeding (by todays standards) graphics, then yes. Starcraft has a wealth of multiplayer support, an engaging and entertaining campaign, and great race balance.

Oh and the story/voice acting is pretty good.

StarCraft is the best RTS ever. The factions are very different from each other but still balanced really well, the units are interesting and fun to play with, it has a long campaign mode and great multiplayer... just buy it man. Don't forget to get Brood War too.

Yeah, the battlechest? That's what I was planning on getting, it's the only hard copy available for me to buy as far as I see.

Bwahahaha! Dude, I've been playing Command and Conquer: Red Alert for the last week. I can handle crappy graphics.

There are two main reasons I'd recommend it:
1. The plot is deep enough to want more, but not too obtrusive on gameplay.

2. The armies play very differently from one another.

I don't think thats accurate. I remember Dune 2 having different units for the different races. Not every unit but a few special units in the end if I remember correctly.
Also command and conquer had differing units, and I'm pretty sure it came before starcraft.

Starcraft however made every race inherently different. for example the humans could repair their units with another unit. The Zerg had regenerating health for their units. The protoss had regenerating shields and un-regenrating health. Diffrent core mechanics, not just different units.

If all goes well, (since I'm 14) I'll be able to get some money from my dad. In one month, I hit 14 1/2, which means I can get a job and make my own money, so I can pay for it then if my dad's wallet fails me. =P

Thank you all, I can't wait to play it.

i think Xtreme's point was not that Starcraft was the first RTS to have differing units, but rather that in Starcraft, Blizzard made a point of making 3 utterly different races (no units of any race of the same tier work the same way. period. The marine is not the zergling is not the zealot). The beauty of it is that despite being so utterly different the races were so carefully balanced.

Dune 2 had different super units but the minigunner type dude was just a minigunner type dude with a different uniform if you played a different race.

How did I miss this thread? Yes Starcraft is worth every penny. I bought my copies the month they came out. Even after I put tons of hours into the single player campaign, I still had almost quadruple the hours logged playing multiplayer. No multiplayer is not just vs. maps. Its quite possibly the most varied and versatile multiplayer ever created.

The game is still very very popular online even without the expansion, thats all I can think since everybody has already said everything. For 20 bucks you will have a great number of challenging missions to keep you occupied for atleast a month unless your alot better than me.

The REAL question is that is the release date a national holiday in South Korea?
I've never played StarCraft before and I've already begun to tire of these jokes.
I've seen so many over the last 2-3 years on the internet.

Why not get it for like 8?

20 bucks seems like the battlechest price.

edit: Yes, definitely, it is one of the best RTS games of all time. (ONE OF, ONE OF, NOT THE BEST, ONE OF)
