Why not get it for like 8?

20 bucks seems like the battlechest price.
It is the Battlechest price. Like I said, that's the only hard copy I would be able to get, and buying games that have expansions WITHOUT the expansions is just...meh.

Well even if you end up being terrible at it, some of the UMS games are pricelessly great. People manage to emulate much more interesting things than you'd expect, creating RPGs with the SC map editor, tower defense games, etc, etc.

But if you do end up enjoying melee-style combat of "you start with this, enemy starts with same thing, here's a (hopefully) balanced map, now go at it" then, well, SC is probably the most balanced and interesting/varied RTS I ever played.

I hate starcraft with a passion, which is odd because I usually enjoy RTSs, to me it just shows it's age. Unless you plan on playing multiplayer a lot I'd stay away.

Well, I'm a huge fan of RTS games, let me say that right off the bat. I thoroughly enjoy Age of Empires, Dawn of War, Command and Conquer, WarCraft, you know, all the good stuff, but I recently got bored with all my games. People have been talking a lot about StarCraft and StarCraft 2, and I was really curious as to whether buying the first one would actually be worth it for me.

So, I just simply want some thoughts on the game and whether or not it's truly as good as it's been rated, from my fellow Escapists.
You are an RTS fan and never tried Starcraft? Shame on you! I suggest you buy Starcraft 1, Starcraft 2 comes out at the end of this year I believe?

But seriously, Starcraft is awesome, you won't find a better RTS out there in my opinion.

Hey coincidence! I picked it up myself yesterday.

I'm not an RTS fan so I'm not going to get too deep into the mechanics but about four hours in and the old 'build a million space marines' tactic seems to be working just fine, hopefully it gets a little deeper. The story however is great. Sure it's the same old 'Spiritual/Hive Mind/Human' tropes fighting it out but Starcraft really nailed the concept, Civil War inspired twist is pretty nice too. Give it a shot.

I'd love to get it, but there's something in me that just can't stand horrible graphics. I'll stick with Halo Wars and just wait till Starcraft II comes out. So that's a "YES! OMFG YES!" if you can stand the graphics and a "meh, try it first" if you don't think you can.

the answer you are looking for is yes. there is a reason why most RTS games are compared to this one. it is by far one of the greatest if not THE greatest RTS of all time and as such is well worth the investment.

I recently got the game with the brood war expansion pack for 5 pound a couple weeks ago.

I don't think so. Going back to it after playing more modern RTS games feels like a chore. It was great for its time but it feels dated very much like the original Diablo feels dated. They didn't age very well, at least in my opinion.

Now, WC3 and Diablo 2, although newer, have aged better. This is mainly due to Blizzard 'getting' it a bit better.

its not the same old "Spiritual/Hive-Mind/Human" its the original.
No... no it isn't. Not by a long shot. Over 10 years before Starcraft came out Warhammer 40k existed with >all< of those existing. Before that, Warhammer. Other than that you've got plenty of other RTS like Dune 2 that did the exact same thing.

Nothing was really original about Starcraft. Blizzard doesn't have an innovative bone in their bodies... never have. What they do, though, is take working ideas and build on them in a rather decent way.

So basically if you haven't ordered this game already, there is something wrong with you... Just saying. I got it about a month ago (again), because i can't find my original CD's. You'll enjoy it, and understand that much more of it when SC2 comes out.

If I had a favorite genre, RTS would not be it.
Still, Starcraft is my favorite game. It's that good.

Worth spending money on?
Yes

Worth spending 20 bucks on?
Hell fucking No

You can buy Starcraft WITH Broodwars Expansion Bestseller Series for $10 at most gaming stores.

$20 for SC is a robbery.

That depends. If you can find a way to throw more money at it, and not fund the destruction of the series, then do so.
