Honestly, I'm with all the other people who didn't go for SGU. To me, it seems like they tried to go the "Younger and Edgier" route and it failed. Hard. It deviated so much from SG-1 and Atlantis that it really didn't feel like Stargate to me.

Instead, I've been watching Seasons 9 and 10 of SG-1 on Hulu lately :D
I wouldn't call SGU "Younger" I'd say it's targeted at a much more mature audience than the other Series.

A "Younger & Edgier" Stargate would be this:

or Stargate: Infinity, but we do not talk about that...

Honestly, it is about time. The Stargate franchise started to go down hill after SG1 season 5 ish and the amount of plot holes and discontinuities just grew out of control. The characters did not develop and were weak as hell, and this became worse with the other series of Stargate.

Bl*ody hell! Spoiler alert! Wait to go ruin an entire show I've invested hours in, gee thanks. Could've titled the thread 'Season Finale' in which case, I would've thought 'oh, last of the season eh? Read your 'Spoiler alert' in the OP (which I hope is there, I can't look at it in fear that I'll read something that makes this news worse), then say 'oh, well, I don't want to know about what's happening, so I'll skip this thread'.

Stargate Universe is an excellent show, I hope this isn't the 'end' end, and just the end of the season, if it is the final finale, I'll be thoroughly disappointed, this is a show that could go on for a total of 5 or 7 seasons, and to end it at season 2 or 3 would be a grave injustice. All those baste*ds watching f*cking reality TV, you've ruined television!
I don't think saying the show has been cancelled is a "Spoiler" it's a fact. Sorry to break it to you, but there will be no new episodes, webisodes, or a TV movie. There are no plans for another series to replace it, and the planned SG-1 and SGA movies have been scrubbed.

Characters are less.... cardboard.
At least SGA's characters made it feel like a sci-fi show and not like the soap opera acting of SGU that pulled the show away from the point that it was sci-fi and Stargate no less, not a soap opera. Sci-fi, depending on the nature of the story elements, is 99.99% of the time suppose to have mainly non-character plots, characters are just to be supplements to sci-fi. That doesn't mean the characters can't be good or fantastic, it just means that they can't steal the show and cover up the point of the show(The technology, space, or aliens, or all of the above).
I just lol'd. SGA had no plot worth following, no characters worth paying attention to. I stopped watching it because it was so inferior compared to SG1, which I've been watching since the very first episode was released.
SGU is actually more in line with SG1. Character driven story. Makes for much better television, much better show.

I have the second half of Season 2 saved on the DVR, though it's very likely that Netflix will catch up and I'll be able to watch it streamed instead.

Having my mother-in-law live with us has added a few bits of complexity when it comes to watching tv. She has her own living room, but she's become permanently ensconced in ours, so we have to make a few changes to our orld viewing habits and lineup. She hadn't finished Stargate: Atlantis, so we've gone through that series over the last month or so. Only a couple episodes left, and we'll move on to SG:U.

I really liked the concept and format for SG:U, even though it broke away from the comedic writing of its forebears. And now I get to sit and wait at least another couple of weeks before I get to watch the end of the series.

Well, there is that. The SGA crew were very one-dimentional even compared to SG1. It was a bold move for them to switch the style of the show like that. Its also the only option they had to keep the show alive. It just didn't really do it for me. Individual plot holes just kept piling up, like - how are they not all dressed in rags, out of ammo and suffering cabin fever?

I'd say one of the reasons SGA sucked a little bit was that SG1 had already done all the "gate malfunction" stories already. Gives em less to work with.

I'll miss stargate, but I'd rather it goes as it is - a pretty darn good set of scifi than getting run into the ground. *cough* simpsons */cough*

Here's my breakdown:
Stargate movie: Interesting concept, stupid and forgettable execution. Only memorable scene is the pyramid exploding...
Stargate SG-1: Fantastic. Best episode was a rip-off of 12:01, a ripoff of Ground-hog day, but immensely entertaining...
Stargate Atlantis: Never got around to watching because of spinoff phobia.
Stargate Universe: Tried solely for Robert Carlisle. Fairly decent, seemed more like the remake of battlestar Galactica or Star Trek Voyager, than Stargate.

The finale was really disappointing, it just trails off. They're alive, they're not home, nothing exciting happens...

Of course SG-1 was the best because it was the original, and SGA was just going off story-lines that led out of SG-1. Spin-off series are never as good or better than the original. But if they stay in the formula of the original, they will always have the viewers and will be at least decent enough to watch.

But it is blatantly obvious that SGU does not equal SG-1 in anyway, except that they both shows have Stargates in them. That was the only similarity.

Since you are comparing SGU and SG-1 based on "Character driven stories", than in comparison SG-1 never had a character driven story, at least not on the horrid level of SGU's stories. Remembering back on how many actual "Character" driven stories SG-1 had, I remember those stories being some of the worst of the show's 200 some episodes. A good example would be the early episode where O'Neill and Carter are thought to have been lost, but instead they were transported to the gate that was buried in Antarctica. That was a horrible episode, I was more interested in where they were and how the gate got there and how it was able to pick them up, instead of that droning on of the two talking about survival, it was obvious that they would both survive, so their wasn't a point.

But other than that, we knew Carter and O'Neill really liked each other, we get all the subtle hints over time, an anytime they expressed anything for one another it was no more than a couple minutes long.

But with SGU we get an episode where there is a ton of urgency, where Destiny is being attacked and one wonders how they will survive, then after only a few seconds of awesome space battle stuff, we get to a cut of Chloe and Scott crying over the fact that he has to leave her with the aliens to get her changed back to normal, then another 10 seconds of the hectic battle then 5 more minute of the two staring at each other or saying cheesy lines. Then after Chloe comes back we get on another 5 minute or more of a scene of them being happy to be together again which is even more cheesy. Considering the seriousness of the situation the ship was in, if this stuff was handled like back in SG-1 times, that 15 minutes would have would have only been about 4 minutes at the most and spread out into one minute or a minute and a half segments.

Also the stupid stuff in the beginning when Eli was pining away for Chloe. He'd be working on something important almost life and death, then she walk in ask him how he was doing and walk out then we would get several minutes of him thinking about it himself or taking to one of the crew about it, all the while he should have been working on that life and death problem. SG-1 would have turned that stuff into a 5 or 10 second reaction shot or a 20 or 30 second conversation of all of about two lines.

While there was character development in SG-1 it was subtle and sweet and it didn't get in the way or take over all of the episodes which were meant for Stargate and sci-fi worthy story-lines.

Edit: While SGU for the first season and a half was a soap opera in a sci-fi setting that hardly touched on the immediate sci-fi stories that could have been told.

I didn't really like SGU. SG1 was awesome, until season 8. SGA was good. SGU was just....meh.

Still, its sad that there will be no more. MGM are in such trouble, and (in my mind at least) a big part of that is that they didn't capitalise on stargate very well. Look at star trek and star wars - not just the series, films, computer games and all the rest. How many stargate games have you seen?

Just feel downright sucky as this is the last of the good sci - fi for a good while. And no, doctor who doesn't count. Some good episodes doesn't disguise the fact that part of the target audience are children, and as such limits what can be done, and overall theme. Also yes, I know there has been some really good, dark, kids cartoons and shows, but they are really rare. (Looking at you, 'pirates' episode)

Honestly, i'm starting to blame sci- fi fans for the current dismal state of the genre.

The mewling masses who like thier sci-fi all nicey nicey, sunday lunch time, cookie cutter, family freindly, non - thought provoking, rinse and repeat drivel.

look at general fictional drama. Shows like lost, the sopranos and that white house one (can't remember the name) often succussfully weave complex plots.

Yet try the same with sci-fi and people run scared, or complain the lack of 'pew pew'.

(Let's see how the game of thrones manages as a comparison in the long run. Because that's gonna soon get a helluva more complex, or lose the fans who have read the books.)

I reckon a lot of problems with the sci fi is that people get into it when younger, then move on when they find it lacks the complexity they want when they get older.

Then when sci- fi shows finally do once in a while break the mould, they miss the boat. The younger generations arent ready for it, the older ones have already given up. (blame them again for not at least giving new shows a chance). Would like to blame the studios for so rarely greenlighting complex shows, but then the genre is an expensive one nowadays (life pocket watches) so they chase the most profitable courses of actions. bah, so many reasons.

As much as I enjoyed SG:U and am sad to see it go, I can't help but be happy because it frees up Robert Carlyle so he can be in the second season of Game of Thrones.

@Merkavar yes
@Donbett1974 true, not sure how I feel about that and dvd sales would have to be monumental. And sure then ending maybe was weak, but I think they got cancelled after they shot it. either way, a better ending than some series finales I know

Seriously? SyFy pulled a legitimate science fiction series but leaves us with wrestling and "Being Human". Reading some of the posts where those of you who take the time to slam SGU make me think that you would prefer watching half naked men and woman pretend to beat the crap out of each other. So please go back to your trailers, drink your boxed wine, eat your pretzels and leave the critiquing of a social and emotionally charged program to those intellectually qualified to do so.

That being said, I hope that the fans of SGU can band together and send a continual barrage of petitions to have SyFy reconsider cancelling such a stellar program as SGU. It is obvious that much attention was placed on developing the characters of Destiny's crew. Colonel Young's last toast where he called his shipmates 'family' perfectly demonstrates how the writers intended the viewers to feel for the characters. The creators of SGU gave birth to a story where the human condition was tested by adversity. This was a theme that continued through every episode of SGU. So for SyFy to cut this series short shows them to be comparable to a mother eating her young.

Well, the American version of Being Human is definitely a divisive series to be sure.
Some people, not necessarily myself included, find it to be an interesting take on the various supernatural tropes and idioms. Other people find it to be boring or too soap opera-esque.

Oh well...

The important thing to remember is that SyFy is being run by people who came out business schools and marketing, not creative people. These are the guys that got big fancy degrees in Media Studies and Telecommunications, not the CalArts crowd.
So they look basically at what sounds like the most solid investment strategy, rather than at what would be creatively advisable or befitting of the network's original fan base.

Politics and Economics of TV have caused many networks to adopt what's ultimately a very conservative investment strategy, not wanting to take the sort of risks that they believe would make them unprofitable in a market where TV as a whole will eventually have to compete with the Internet and it's wealth of talented independent creators.

There will be a day when Doug Walker is more well known and regarded than any current TV critic. The next big Science Fiction show may very well be broadcast on blip.

Until then, there's always something you haven't seen yet.
Have you ever heard of Quatermass?
Might be worth your time...

oh, BTW
Makes me think that you would prefer watching half naked men and woman pretend to beat the crap out of each other. I'd like to hear you say that to a combination of: Stephen King, Billy Corgan, Daniel Radcliff, Conan O'Brien, Jimmie Carter, Andy Kaufman, an undead FDR, and the Queen,
All pro wrestling fans.
