So this discussion is about the spin off series of Stargate Atlantis, 'Stargate Universe' Im a really big stargate fan to the point where any sg1 or atlantis that comes on within seconds i can tell you the epiosde name which season and what happens ( very sad i know ) but the fact is Stargate is a great francise and the new series Universe has been cancelled with only 2 seasons just because not enough people are liking it and I can see the view from people who dont like it because of the "Drama" side of it where as SG1 and Atlantis still had a chessy humour to it , I feel stargate universe is "Darker" than the other series but still as a fan of stargate i believe it should continue so i'd like to see what The escapist thinks :)
I like stargate universe. I like sg1 the best and never really got into atlantis. My main gripe with sgu though is that pretty much every episode had to have some kind of sexual tension or sex scene in it. Like the very first episode pretty much opened up with the Lt banging a girl in the supply closet. Then yes ofcourse the drama...which a lot of the drama they built up just seemed too over the top. I am rather upset they canceled the series even though I bet they bit off more then they could chew with the discovery they made. I mean I have no clue how they would wrap that up. Plus favorite SG1 episode is when Oneal and Tilk where in the time loop and started hitting golf balls thru the stargate.

I enjoy Stargate universe but it just isn't as good as Sg-1 or Atlantis because they where fun whereas universe obsesses over trying to be dark and gritty also it doesn't help that MGM went bankrupt I mean if the James bond movie is postponed indefinitely Stargate universe didn't stand much chance of being kept alive

I hate Stargate Universe. I mean really hate it. Probably has something to do with not feeling like a Stargate show at all, but it may just be that it's flat out boring.

I had two big problems with SG:U and I only watched to 1/2 way through the 1st season because of them. The first was everyone always seemed to be carrying round the Idiot Ball more then usual. The second was the reason I liked Stargate and Atlantis was because there was always some humour in it, the characters all got on well enough and everyone seemed to be enjoying making it (i.e. It was fun!). Sadly, they went the BSG route instead and the only person who ever seemed to be enjoying themselves (both as an actor and a character) was Robert Carlyle.

*Quick Edit* With SG:1 & SG:A, it always felt like everyone involved knew they were in a show who's premise was fairly stupid and decided to just run with it. Like the entire cast and crew were mocking the audience slightly for taking it seriously. In SG:U, they took themselves seriously so the audience did the mocking.

I love SG-1 and SGA, but SGU can dig a hole and die, it sucked big time compared to the others. If I want crappy drama and all about titties I'd watch some silly show on TV, I watch Stargate to enjoy a good scifi.

I'm a big Stargate fan (I run the escapist stargate fan group) and I really like SGU. The first half of season 1 was a bit of a disappointment, but after the break it really picked up and the next season is great. It's a damn shame the story won't be finished as it will end on a cliffhanger.

I didn't care for atlantis but SGU is very enjoyable.

I don't care about the fact that it isn't like the other shows and the fact that it blatantly copies BSG is one of the strong points in my opinion.

It failed to be "darker" because everything always worked out in the end anyway, and was just classic Hollywood cliffhangers. It had some rather retarded character-choices (the classic Damsel in Distress that was the senators daughter comes to mind. God I wanted her killed off so damn much), with pretty much Rush being the only genuinely interesting character.
It didn't feel like Stargate because the show never really GOT anywhere. It was just another "oh no we are going to die"-situation at the ship, which was always resolved and returned them to status quo with them still being screwed and having no control what-so-ever.

I'm glad it's dead, and next time they try, I hope they will make something closer to SG:A and SG:1.

BTW: Reason I liked SG:A was probably McKay, and the relationship he had with Sheppard. The humor between them is gold.

BSG lite is what that show is.
I still find myself watching it, but I'm not really upset that it'll be finished soon.

Love SG1, i could probably tell you what happens if you were to describe an episode (wouldnt know the name though)

however i never really got into atlantis or universe, shame that it got cancelled though
Pretty much this. I'm a little surprised that Universe got cancelled so soon though.
One of the biggest things that bugged me about Stargate Universe is since when did the stargate have a limited range??? Every time I'd hear them talk about the Destiny being "out of range" I want scream because the stargate is not supposed to be limited by range, or at least it should be able to go anywhere within a single galaxy without issue.
I also hate the new look of the stargates.
I registered an account on the escapist just so I could reply to this. I hope you feel special.

The range of a gate is based on the power that it's receiving:
examples:
the ZPM required for the gate at SGC to dial Atlantis
The planet composed of a high amount of naquadria (Stargate's magical energy ore that tends to detonate in a large way) that was required to get on board the destiny in the first place.

take that principle, and apply it to the gates from the destiny.
- we know that they're far older in design/technology than the gates in the milky way or pegasus galaxies
- on top of that, the Destiny is constantly running on fumes

this combined with the fact that the destiny is not in a static location but constantly moving away from each planet in a straight line, at FTL speeds, makes the probability of being out of range to the destiny totally fit with the continuity of the other shows.

that, and it makes for a nice "oh noes" episode or two.

sg1 amazing. atlantis amazing. sgu LOST set on a spaceship, it has nothing that makes it feel like a part of the stargate franchise beyond its name and a stargate. were are the exotic planets and over the top bad guys? were are the lovable characters you just want to spend more time with then your own friends? were is the interesting plot developments and fantastic story?

what sgu is if you sum it up is a sell out of the franchise, it has no spark, no interesting characters (apart from rush), no interesting places, no fun! seriously the ONLY reason i continue to watch is because i feel like i have an obligation to sg1/sga too do so. and a final point i want all the characters to die (apart from rush) because they are so f**king emo and boring. im really glad they axed this, please make a decent one tailored to the fanbase next time!

I still don't buy it. Yes, I know the gate's range is limited by how much power is pumped into the gate, that's the whole point. Anywhere within a single a single galaxy should be fair game. Esp. since SG-1 was once able to dial the gate using power provided by special energy producing plants.
And that "older model" stuff doesn't hold water either and as I said, SG-1 was once able to dial the gate using plants!! so the Destiny running on fumes doesn't wash either.
Also doesn't the Destiny usually come to a stop before they can dial anywhere?

Edit: spelling error fix

SG-1 is now one of my favorite TV series of all time. Atlantis was decent, but felt like they were trying to recapture the humor and character dynamics of SG-1 instead of developing their own. I haven't really had a chance to check out Universe yet, but the whole "darker and grittier" approach has never really floated my boat when it's a change within a franchise or series.

At the beginning it was rubbish (lost but in space, yawn), but just as it has started to get good it is canceled. Yay...not.
