I like Cyberpunk more... it has a more dynamic effect than just the aesthetic feel...<.<

When done to their best, the two are nearly indistinguishable (Read The Diamond Age by Neil Stephenson, if you don't believe me). But for my money Cyberpunk has more potential. Steampunk is very cool aesthetically, but I feel that beyond its aesthetics it has yet to actually do anything that Cyberpunk hasn't done.

Plus, as much as I want to love Steampunk, I'm not really a fan of its fanbase. Never has their been a more hipster nerd culture.

Steampunk has a serious awesome factor attached to it, buuut... Cyberpunk is just more convenient technology. I'd love to have access to tech like that...

Nifty LED's and light tubes everywhere vs. the refined, Victorian feel...

Difficult choice. Is there some way I could be both?

I always think of Cyberpunk as a lot more dystopian, so Steampunk.

I also don't see anything Cyberpunk-like as the vision for the future. Steampunk may actually be more representative of what I'd like to see for the future, so Steampunk all the way!

Um could someone please explain to me the difference between Steam and Cyberpunk exactly? I really don't know what exactly the differences are with them. D:

I have always had a fondness for victorian era art, fashion, and just the beauty of nearly everything produced in this period. For that reason i would have to say that i prefer steam punk for the mixture of the beauty that comes from the victorian aesthetic and the ability to still use modern day technology, though it may come in a different package.

Cyberpunk grew out of the early to mid 80's and authors like William Gibson, Bruce Stirling, Neil Stephenson and others. They were futurists who developed a different interpretation of a potential distopian future in the same vein as Huxley and Orwell but their vision of the future focused largely on the way that technology would alter how we perceive ourselves. A cyberpunk future typically focuses on the dehumanizing effects of technology, and the increasing power of corporations to the point that they supersede national governments. Western society has typically declined, often balkanized, and there is an absolutely astounding wealth gap.

Steampunk seems to mostly involve a blending of Victorian/Edwardian era science fiction (Think HG Wells) and modern stylistic touches... Gibson and Stirling wrote a 'steampunk' novel called The Difference Engine about what would happen if Charles Babbage managed to actually build a functioning computer in the middle of the 19th century.

I don't really like either at all. Steampunk is prettier so I'd go with that even though I hate it.

Steampunk. I love the classy clothing of the past, and combined with futuristic technology, it's a pretty cool looking world.

Cyberpunk, because in many ways its the modern world which makes it feel more likely to actually happen.
